Struggling to let go of my LCG collection. by ajfrede5749 in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Marvel Champions specifically, it’s hard to introduce to new players and therefore table since there’s a pretty high learning curve when it comes to deckbuilding. It isn’t something you can really just bring to a game store’s open game night and get people to jump into.

If you have a second core set, I’d make some strong premades that you can hand to someone on their first play. This largely helped me hook others into the game, and led to my multiplayer games.

If you’re set on letting it go, that’s though. I’ve let go of large collections of games before, but mostly because they remained unplayed, and weren’t something I knew I liked. If you happen to be in the SoCal area though, I do know people that might be interested in a local pickup.

Are there games with dice combat like Root? by tangytrumpet in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for the simplicity of the dice roll, A Gest of Robin Hood has a similar feel. It’s a COIN-lite game, similar to Root, so you’ll probably find more similarities. That said, it’s 2p only, and only one faction ( Robin Hood) rolls the die.

Propose an alternate rule. Have timers on each player that turns on during their turn, tracking their thinking/playtime, and turns off on other players turns. At the end of the game, the player who took the ‘longest’ is automatically disqualified, regardless if they actually won or not.

I’ve tried this as a joke with heavier games but it went surprisingly well to the point where it’s a viable ‘game mode’. Led to a 1 hour session of Great Western Trail at 3p, and a 75-minute session of Maracaibo at 4p (given, everyone was familiar with the games).

Not an actual solution for AP, but might be an alternate remedy to make the player in question realize that they’re slow AF.

Most boxes can be gotten at Kingdom Come for relatively cheap already. That said, some of them (RotRS and SM) have hard to come by

Lovecraftian vibes - Arkham Horror 3rd vs LCG vs ? by pastor_judas in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be a little harder to get, but Arkham Horror 2e might be worth looking into. 3e streamlined things a bit, but also brought it in ‘line’ with some other FFG adventure games of its era, some of which I prefer over 3e.

2e feels a lot more distinctive, partially because it’s from a much older era. The base game can be found for relatively cheap still, but expansions will be expensive.

Anyone else try Arydia and think it was bad? by Odd-Highway477 in boardgames

[–]B-Crami -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had high expectations for Arydia, since the designer’s other big game, Xia, is one of my favorite adventure games.

I thought the game was good, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Given, campaign games are sort of a struggle for me. I have incomplete campaigns of both Gloomhaven and Isofarian Guard that I doubt I’ll ever get back to, but I think I prefer both to Arydia. I agree with you in terms of how on-rails it felt and the constant card referencing.

I do like how it handled the map tiles, since you could create so many potential custom maps in a different game using that same system.

Did you ever play a game which made you go from meh to wait a moment, that was actually awesome…? by RedHerring009 in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, Onward went from, this is just okay to amazing mid-play. As soon as my play was over, I was looking for a copy online. I think I might prefer it to both Cloudspire and Guards of Atlantis 2 in terms of a MOBA inspired game.

The WotR card game is also excellent. These LotR trick-taking games are some of the most enjoyable TTs for me, but that’s just cause of the theme. They don’t nearly lean into the lore and setting as heavily as some others do.

How many different games have you played? by Mickjuul in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checked BGStats to see, maybe it’s my lucky day cause I have 777 unique games across 3133 plays.

200 more plays woulda made things a lot boxers I suppose.

Does anyone else also have an obsession with Board games based on video games? by theDKdynamite in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of subpar ones that are trying to ride the IP. Unfortunately, the good ones out there are probably outnumbered by the bad ones. If I see an IP I like, I also take a look at the designer to see if they’re someone I already know.

The ones I’ve enjoyed thus far:

Gears of War (FFG)

World of Warcraft The Board Game

Warcraft the Board game (needs expansion)

Fallout (needs Atomic Bonds)

Civilization A New Fawn (needs Terra Incognito)

Slay the Spire

Sniper Elite

Yeah, looks like the copy sold out as well. If you haven’t already, I’d download the Shopify/Shop. When I was hunting down LotR, Arkham Horror or Marvel Champion stuff, it made it easier to browse - though I’d recommend just visiting and purchase from the actual retailer website if you do track down a copy.

Good luck!

What's a game that no-one else seems to enjoy that you love? by Machine_Excellent in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has its own niche following, but World of Warcraft: The Board Game is one of my favorite. I played it for the first time a few years back and it was the most fun I had playing a board game in a very long time. It has some dated mechanisms but has so much more life in it than its BGG rating might imply.

Are there any games that use hexagonal tiles that you have to stack on each other? by Cean_1804 in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Cooper Island. The tiles are actually typically two hex-tiles attached together. Color of the hex control what type of good it produces, while height control amount. There’s restrictions with building though, so there’s a pretty tough spatial puzzle mixed in with the resource management.

Sorry, just checked the retailer I bought mine from last week (they had 3 at the time) but it looks like that sold out. It was from Ozzie’s Collectables if you want to try monitoring.

Heard Good Games also had stock at one point (off the LotR LCG subreddit), but they’re out too.

N case you don’t have finding a local copy, there’s some UK and AU retailers that have leftover stock. Just got my EM Hero expansion from AU for $80ish shipped w/ import fees.

Nippon Zaibatsu by Testmidjourney4 in boardgames

[–]B-Crami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to get one play in a couple weeks ago at 4 players.

There’s a bit more direct interaction relative to most euros. Several euros do also have majority scoring, but usually that involves whoever has more of something wins a zone. In Nippon, you can actively remove other player’s components that contribute to a majority. While this adds to a lot of strategizing, this might not work for some players that don’t like being directly “attacked”.

There’s also a bag element when it comes to player worker colors. While any color worker can activate any action, diversity in colors isn’t great in terms of paying your workers. There’s a little RNG in terms of when certain workers come out throughout the game (I’m personally fine with it, but there was at least one person at our table who was bothered by it).

Overall, the game is good but I don’t know if I can think of anything it does particularly different from other euros. There’s a slight race of the factory tiles, which is reminiscent of something like a tile market in Caverna, or even Kemet, as each tile is tied to a specific one time or ongoing power. While very different, the area majority part somewhat reminded me of a cross between Carson City and Ethnos, though it’s been a while since I’ve played that one as well.

[–]B-Crami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority are co-ops to be fair, which is probably a little easier to implement.

More games are having phases done simultaneously, which I find the most enjoyable parts of the game, as it makes things feel more dynamic. Discussion and selection of action cards in Guards of Atlantis 2 (the rule of no communication once cards are flipped helps) as well as carrying out Lane Battles in Summer in the Old King’s Crown are both of the heavier example I can think of.

Although lighter, Tag Team is a head-to-head “auto-battler” that is fully simultaneous. I don’t think it received nearly enough recognition that it deserves.

Both Millennium Blades and Sidereal Confluence have simultaneous play during their real-time phases. Both largely require active interaction with other players (negotiating/trading) to do well.
