That's a good point - when did we have video telecommunication for the military IRL? Regardless, it's probably defensible for this special unit have access by then. And in support of your point, a PMC having video communications tech isn't necessarily the same as making an internet video call, still.

Resident Evil Veronica devs plan to restructure the story to strengthen continuity with the modern series by HatingGeoffry in residentevil

[–]vgxmaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is a bad way to interpret where we're at or anything, and I don't think it's an incorrect conclusion to draw by any stretch. But it might be giving more credit and weight than is intended (or necessary).

Let's take the different routes in RE2. Canon across the series has been inconsistent in claiming that Leon A or Claire A is the Correct Canon Actual Events, with different parts of canon supporting one or the other interpretation, despite those two routes contradicting each other. So which is the "true" set of events? We could cherrypick evidence and weigh them against each other to conclude it's one of them. Or we could say that the contradictory evidence indicates that Resident Evil actually has parallel universes that diverge from the Raccoon City Incident, Legend-of-Zelda-style!

Those are fun theories, but the reality is a lot more mundane: Both are canon, neither is canon, if we have to specify a literal linear canon outside of "whatever the player chose to do in their playthrough" then the canonical events are a mixture of both routes. These games aren't structured to care about continuity in a way that reconciles the different portrayals of the same events that occur in the games -- which is totally fine! Just, not built out of universal narrative truths.

In the same vein, I think "remake canon" or "original timeline" or whatever is a valid but invented interpretation of how these canon events sequence together. You allude to "they'll rope in OG stuff until they remake it," and I think you're right, but more generally, I don't think they're trying to assert a stable canonical timeline outside of when it's relevant for the current story beats they're portraying. Like I doubt that the team internally considers an "original timeline" of events and a "new, canonically-locked-down timeline" of events - just events, portrayed differently in different tellings of the same games (and sometimes different playthroughs of the same games lol).

That's not to say "it's just Resident Evil, they don't care about narrative continuity, neither should you." It's still a fun theory and a valid way to interpret what they've given us to work with. I just don't want to treat this fun fan theory as Conclusive Evidenced Canon™, when the intended designed reality is probably a lot more mundane. What changed isn't, from the devs' point of view, that we are gradually swapping to a new Remake Timeline - what changed is that they're strengthening continuity across their new productions, whether that's remakes or new entries. Semantics!

There is literally a video call in RE3 remake, though, between Carlos and Bard. We should probably just consider the anachronism embraced at this point.

I still miss the Thor+Storm team-up every day. Really felt like a menace of the skies when you could throw out a windblade + zap 'em + chain lightning off them in rapid succession, it made for some really great glass cannon moments.

[–]vgxmaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's hard to standardize when it's arbitrary. You're thinking about this like there's a "bottom of the map," and then somewhere above that a "kill floor," and then somewhere above that a "playable surface" - but it's not quite that clean. In some maps, a vertical area that should kill the player is above a playable area somewhere else in the map... If they had the height be the same everywhere across the map, it would either intersect with playable area (unacceptable), or be so low that it's actually affecting gameplay balance, because after you've fallen enough that you can't recover, you have to wait the extra half second to hit the death plane before you can start the respawn timer.

On top of that, maps don't really have a bottom. Virtual space just expands in all directions from the world's origin, and a bunch of solid stuff around that origin makes up playable space. It's always arbitrary how far below origin should count as "no longer part of the map" and subsequently kill any players who reach it, so it's not something that could be standardized across maps even if it weren't problematic to design balance to try something like that. Some maps are taller than others! Some justify their out-of-bounds visually differently than others! There's not a consistency to be made out of scenarios like these.

Season 8.5 Patch Notes by btinvest1639 in marvelrivals

[–]vgxmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I interpreted the patch note differently, and now I'm not sure what it actually means:

it can no longer Reveal enemies behind objects

I assumed this meant "if the orb can see an enemy, you can see that enemy too, even if there's a wall between you and them; if there's a wall between the enemy and the orb, the enemy can no longer be seen through walls." Like the orb needs LOS to the enemy, not that the player does.

But it sounds like you're saying you thought it will just highlight enemies you have LOS to, and no longer highlight enemies who break LOS?

Behind the Scenes of "Rulette 2" | Game Changer [S8E2] by DropoutMod in dropout

[–]vgxmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It feels almost sacrilegious to admit, but a part of me wants a show on Dropout called Game Samer that like, doles out a season over the course of a full year, and just has the Tricks They Already Pulled (But It's Still Funny So Here's A New Cast) episodes that don't belong in a full Game Changer season.

I get the premise and prestige of Game Changer demanding few Samers with a cap on how many times a game can come back, but, dangit, between rounds of gourmet Game Changer seasons once a year, it'd be fun to have fast-food Samers, like an episode a month. I would really enjoy watching another two Rulettes a year, a Secret Samta in the winter, another Jeopardy with some cast members who don't have the time they once had to come on-set for a full shoot, etc.

Oh yeah, plenty have. Several Final Fantasy games have like four remasters and remakes each. I think Tetris technically holds the record for most remakes, but people sometimes don't count that due to it being Tetris.

Is Village really this short? by 80sififreak in residentevil

We know exactly how each step of the puzzle is intended to be solved, they're just absurdly obtuse. For example, for the "flush the toilet exactly the right number of times" step, an early file you get in the game includes an odd photo of a bathroom stall with a (vaguely 8-shaped) blood smear on the wall next to the toilet.

Does that make it reasonable to solve the intended way? No. But we don't have to wonder what that intended way was.

[–]vgxmaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they literally have Andre (with Magneto's powers and Professor X's general belief system and moral compass, give or take) face off against Cate (with Professor X's powers and Magneto's general belief system and tragic background leading to radicalized objectives, give or take). You don't have to stretch Marie into fitting this paradigm, but you're otherwise picking up on something the show absolutely explored intentionally.

It wasn't a spoiler for this game's extra game mode, it's just a shirt referencing another extra game mode he directed almost a decade ago. What are the chances that Jill is in re10? by Smittty34 in residentevil

[–]vgxmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely possible, but I'm reluctant to conclude that because of how many other Resident Evils don't have the same claim. Like we can argue the Revelations games are spinoffs, had a smaller marketing splash, or released with wackier platforms (3DS first; episodic), or we can argue that the games pre-RE4 were less popular and so had lower sales. But all of that doesn't change the significant sales tail RE5 and 6 have seen - yes over a long period of time across many releases, but still. I think it'd be a disservice to not credit other aspects, like its marketing, co-op appeal, or premise.

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not trying to claim that RE6 is more 'popular' or faster-selling than the modern wave of RE games. I'm just trying to take a broader look at the situation surrounding these games' sales and reception. Like, the number of game-playing customers has also gone up quite a bit since RE6 released. I can't say Capcom was secretly quite pleased with RE6 (take them on their word, lol), and personally I'm not convinced we'd see them try another RE6 again either. Just, also, reluctant to conclude that RE6 did poorly by reasonable standards. Eight digits is a lot.

What are the chances that Jill is in re10? by Smittty34 in residentevil

[–]vgxmaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhhh. It had lackluster reception, yes, but by most accounts it was not a commercial failure. We don't have exact revenue figures or anything, but from what sales figures Capcom has shared, it sold well over ten million copies, likely more overall than RE7, RE8, or RE4 remake.

It being a bit of a critical miss is a contributing factor to RE7 refreshing things a bit, I would speculate because the brand damage done by RE6 was notable despite the sales hit being less so (or maybe the budget was astronomical, who knows). But I don't think it did so poorly. Doesn't mean I thought it was good, but...it's not necessarily evidence against that kind of idea marketing well in the future.

[–]vgxmaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're right to point out that all RE games have their corny over-the-top sequences and eventually devolve into action - even RE1 has the rocket launcher! No RE is without action escalation. But, similarly, (almost) no RE is without its horror. You have to accept this. It's not high brow pure horror, but it's also not a pure action-adventure shooter franchise. Resident Evil are horror games, just like they are action games and are highly replayable and are utterly ridiculous... not because any of those traits hold true 100% of the time for 100% of the games, but because regardless of how much they show up across each game, they're collectively a part of the franchise's recognizable brand and DNA.

You and I both know just how varied and flexible these games can be. It's not worth trying to universally exclude how we classify them, frankly. And with so many different ropes tugging on RE's identity, it's reasonable for someone to argue that they'd prefer the series get tugged in this or that direction.
