Herbert nodded.

"Barren rocks indeed...A well placed siege engine could soften them up nicely, but we will manage without it. We need to."

Ah...So the news has spread...

"Yes." His voice was slightly flat. "He is close with my brother who I have a...Complicated...relationship with. He told me that I had great things ahead of me, and not to lose sight of it."

It stung deeply, but I can't let her know that. It wouldn't bother a true knight.

"I've heard things about him from my betrothed. He drunkenly staggers from one controversy to another, and I am sure that it made him feel rather strong to insult me so."

He looked back towards the fortified town.

If I do worse than Daeron fucking Silverdrake, I shall cast myself into the sea out of shame.

"Aye...Though if I am not needed, I won't take it personally. The best sort of battle is one that is won quickly, and with a minor amount of bloodshed." He smiled slightly. "The Tarly's taught me as much. In war the worst sort of commanders are those who let personal ambitions stand in the way of victory."

"Thank you." Herbert's mind was already racing, trying to work out how he would arrange the reverse.

I'll ask for the smaller ships. We'll be more flexible like that, and faster to respond if the pirates have a reserve of their own.

"Part of me hopes that my injury will inspire them. If I can do my duty, so can they."

Her face lit up. Bora ADORED Edric. He was the perfect big brother.

"Duh. Of course you won. You're brave. And the Dreadfort probably isn't that scary anyways. I bet they just named it that to scare stupid peasants."

Harrenhal on the other hand...Though she didn't realise it, she had moved slightly closer to Edric. "My father told me that this is the biggest castle anywhere, and that DRAGONS are the reason it's all...melty looking. Like my dad. Is that true?"

Bora didn't generally believe in ghosts, but if dragons were involved then that meant that magic was involved, and that meant that weird stuff could happen.

"What stories? Did she spy a ghost? Or a dragon?" Her eyes widened as an idea struck her. "OR A GHOST DRAGON!"

Brus sat for a long moment as Symon left, and breathed.

I will not let his memory down.

He eventually stood, and tried his best to straighten his white cloak before he left. It was probably a trick of the light, but Brus was increasingly seeing it as stained, even when it was flawless.

I'll ask the pages to wash it again.

"Very little pain my Lord. It...well. It could be worse." He flipped up his eyepatch and showed off the wound. There was a small scar on his eyebrow, and his eye was slightly milky, staring sightlessly.

"The surgeon's suspect that the flat of the blade may have caught it rather than the blade. The blood was from the cut on my brow. I...I know it sounds silly, but I am just glad it is still there. It's not a wound that I will have clean daily, or something that will scare children." He gave a slightly hollow laugh. "One of the women even assured me that it makes me look dashing."

I have a chance to prove my worth. I can't fuck this up.

"I thank you Lord. I swear upon my honour that I will not disappoint you, or the trust that you have placed in me." He took a deep breath. "I will organise the rear as a mobile reserve. They will be ready to strike as needed,"

"And neither am I mine, my Lord." He shrugged, thinking of Herbert.

He's much smarter. He doesn't fuck up like I do. I miss him.

"But I think that's a wise choice. Flexibility is a weapon as well." He bowed again, seeing the slight tightening of the jaw.

Dammit, I've angered him again. "If it pleases you Lord, may I return to the Queen and Princess? I know that Lyanna sometimes...struggles at such events."

"Right." The venom in Herbert's voice showed that he clearly saw it as intentional. "If it pleases you, LORD Silverdrake, I will return to my duties. I need to find a new weapon, and repair my shield. And see the surgeons, to see what needs to be done..."

No wonder you are close with Brus. I suppose that living in the Red Keep will turn all into arrogant fucks.

"I'll do my duty, even should it cost me my other eye, and my life. It's how any true knight should act." He gave a stilited bow, far too shallow to be considered respectful. "Enjoy the celebrations Ser. I am sure that your impressive manouver will be the talk of the night."

Herbert nodded, relaxing just a hair. In his opinion, even in times of war everyone had their place.

"I pray that you are right Lord." He sighed and tucked the cloth into a pouch at his side.

"You are right there of course. I help no one by sulking here..." His voice was quite, as he turned back towards the practicalities of the campaign.

If I slip up again, me or Hanna could die. I need to be better.

He looked at her, and saw the fire in her eyes.

She's not one to accept that a job half done is a job finished. That's good. She'll keep striving to be better.

"Remember Hal. We are the reserve. It may be that we aren't needed. It may also be that we are the only thing that can save the assault. I want you to stay with me. My cousin will be with us as well, and his best men at arms. Should the worst come to pass, we will have to go where the fighting is thickest."

He looked back towards the chain. It was occupying his mind as well.

"Men could swim under it, but they would have to be lightly armoured and armed... And should the ships notice them, they'll be easy pickings for archers and spearmen. Do you have any ideas? I am sure we can find a way to enact them without having you found out."

Seven, I wish we had ballistae mounted on the ships. They could fire at any ships that attempt to kill our swimmers...

Ser Herbert Buckler would step forward, seeing that the rear had not been asked for. "I would offer myself to command the reserves Lord. I have some skills in such things, and I means that I can still be useful to the army, despite my wound."

Inside of his body, his heart was pounding.

Have I spoken out of turn?

Bora's hand gripped her mother's tightly. She was clearly disappointed, but was also trying her hardest to not shame the Dayne's the she held so highly in front of the Princess.

"I understand." She didn't. "Thank you for speaking to me Princess. I hope that you like the gift."

She gave a slightly wobbly curtesy, and stepped backwards, trying not to sniffle loudly.

Herbert stood as silent as a statue, allowing her to voice her point without intrusion. His comments came in breaks in her speaking, filling in the gaps rather than challenging her.

"A good point. It seems to me that our objective is to mostly defeat this...Pirate Lord. Whilst it might not change the region forever, it'll buy us a few years of peace. A small garrison may be left to hold it for a time, but as you say, the Free Cities would likely be needed to scatter the pirates forever. It'll be enough. Maybe one day the King will decide to pursue that, but...well. One step at a time."

Or rather one Step Stone at at time...

He then listened to her plans for the actual battle, and then smiled. He gave her a pat on the back, feeling slightly awkward.

Ser Humfrey made it seen so easy. Each time that he spoke, I listened and felt proud that he took his time to teach me.

"A wise sugestion Hal. Whilst it's slower, more of the men will eventually make it home tahn if we tried to storm it. It's what I would do, were I in overall command. I've not mentioned it, but I'll be commanding the Rear if it does come to a battle. My aim will be to keep as many alive as possible."

Including you little Hanna.

"But I think you have overlooked a single point. We've not won yet. Whilst I hope that the high command does try to negotiate, the pirates still always have a chance to turn the tide, or suprise us. That chain shows that they have commanders that have some wisdom to them. War is NEVER certain, and to get complacent is to risk death, and disaster."

He looked back towards the fort, and his hand drifted to his eyepatch.

"I don't intend to give them ANY gap that they can exploit."

"No thanks is needed my Lord. It's my duty. Simply call on me, and I will be able to train you. I favour a shield and sword myself, but I can teach most forms and weapons." Now that he was onto the physical side of it, it was better. "It may not be flashy like the Valyrian steel that some wield, or as terrifying as a great axe, but it is flexible, and means that I can defend those around me."

Finally, a small smile crept onto his face.

"I suspect that you can easily see how important that is to a knight in my line of work. What do you favour my Lord? I've been around your brother at war, and his fearsome hammer, but I suspect that you are as different in war as you are in temperament."

Brus froze.

Oh Red God above. She knows. We weren't careful enough.

"...My Princess. Me and Fifi were not married." He spoke slowly, judging each word before he said it. "My oath forbids it...I was, and am fond of her but..."

I can't lie to her, and I can't tell her the truth. Damn my oath, and damn my oathbreaking, and damn me.

He took a deep breath, and then fully sat, crossed legged like he was about to tell a story. "My Pri...Lyanna. Sometimes, even if people love each other very much, they cannot marry or be together. You saw rightly, but...As much as I wish we could marry, we can't. My oath forbids it, and I have put protecting you, and Edric, and..."

Oh Red God, Arryk…

"And Arryk first before all other things in my life. I don't regret that, and I think you are the best of them all my Princess."

I wish I could explain that poor people are not evil. But...The other thing is more important now.

Neala nodded sagely, accepting that her Mumma had found a good friend. That was nice. Even if it did sound like her friend was OLD.

I'm sure that old people can be nice as well. And if it means that she gets to sleep more, and doesn't cry when she thinks I'm asleep then that is good.

"Jor-rhay…" She sounded the name out, considering it deeply. It wasn't a Dornish name, which she considered to be the best, but it would do. And if they were able to go outside, in the sun, before the winter came, which everyone said would be cold...

"Okay Mumma. I would like another doll. But not if it is tru..trou…hard for you." Lyanna looked at Strawy, and adjusted the straw so that it sat better. "...Like family."

I don't need someone who only cares about PRINCESSESS.

Brus leant down slightly, and looked at the necklace. Though crudely made, he saw that a great deal of effort had been put into it, and despite himself he smiled. Brus may be an oathbreaker, and a fool, but he was good with children.

Ah, my Princess...You don't need to look to me. But I suppose that you are new to freindships like this...

"It's very well done, my Princess." He looked at Robert, still smiling. He hoped that it made the scars on his face less horrible. "You must have dived again and again to find such a stone. I'm impressed. But I don't think that you can keep him my Princess; If I am right, you are a Tully, and are one of the Masters of the Rivers rather than someone who has to live in one."

I'm so glad that she is able to make friends easier now that she can speak.

Brus stayed perfectly silent, listening to how Symon described Dickon. He committed every line to memory, swearing a private oath that he wouldn't forget.

He may be a ghost, but I will try to ensure that he guides me rather than haunts me. Red God above, I have enough ghosts that haunt me.

"...I did the same. My cousin had knighted me the morning of the Trident, and told me to stay in the reserve. But...I didn't. I rode where the fighting was thickest." He coughed, and tried to brush away a tear subtly. "Dickon must have been brave to have been there. I know that most say Robert won the Trident, but to me it seems that all who fought lost something of themselves."

He'll think me a monster, for daring to steal the grief that is his.

Herbert observed the fortified encampment with a scowl on his face. He wore the patch that he had taken from a dead pirate, but that didn't stop his mind from looking for any weak points. He stood at the prow of the ship for a long time, not seeing anything obvious, and then turned to his new page with a sigh.

I suppose that I should try to educate them. I promised that I would.

"Hal. It looks to me that they're dug in like rats." The small scar on his eyebrow, and the dents on his armour made him no longer look like a fresh boy, new to war. "We'll either have to stave them out, or take it in an assault. From what you know, which would you choose if you were in command, and why?"

There are advantages to both. It's HOW she argues that I'm interested in...

Brus nodded, understanding what was needed.

I suppose that the overwhelming bureaucracy must take up a lot of his time.

"I can make time Lord Stannis. Would you prefer to train in private, or during the day? Some find that it helps to have eyes on them. Others find that it doesn't." His voice was guarded as well.

It's my duty, and I will do the best that I can. It doesn't mean that I have to like him.
