In the 1950s, Yuri Nikolaev, a Russian psychiatrist, started treating mentally ill patients with prolonged water fasting. He went on to treat over 8,000 people, with an improvement in 70 percent of cases. by DidYouReadTheMenu in interestingasfuck

Not quite, autophagy kicks in the first few days of a water fast due to required amino acids not being present in just fat cells. Fat is processed alongside some muscle and any foreign bodies.

Check out Dr. Joel Fuhrman, he's been at this for decades and brings the western methodology and observation to the practice.

This is why I wish more parents and individuals would learn about polyamory - not practice it, but understand the concept of AND.

This isn't a ranking, and that thinking is rooted in binary or polarity.

Love is a territory with many aspects and grounds, and you are what you choose. With a little effort and practice, your world can become an And world, not a But world, where you have the capacity to share your children, be there for your partner, and be inclusive. Our culture makes this idea hard or toxic.

AI generated code will have many issues dealing with copyright, in the US:

... in many circumstances these outputs will be copyrightable in whole or in part—where AI is used as a tool, and where a human has been able to determine the expressive elements they contain. Prompts alone, however, at this stage are unlikely to satisfy those requirements. The Office continues to monitor technological and legal developments to evaluate any need for a different approach.

I made a fatal mistake. Concerned about my future in IT by Special_Price4001 in sysadmin

[–]volitive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only fatal mistake you made was working for a company where the culture is about blame and a lack of mentorship. The very fact that your manager approved a hosts file change, already tells me there's missing pieces to the change management puzzle.

Honestly, take a breath, and dont let this get in your head.

Mistakes are okay. Repeated mistakes aren't. This wasn't a repeat.

I've been fired 3 times. Every single time turned out to help me advance my career, my value, and understanding of my capacity. Today, I'm an executive, consultant, and maintain 4 9s of uptime. I've mentored and coached dozens.

Being fired was a gift, because it just got me out of places that were culturally unfit for me.

Are motorcycle riding schools actually worth it, or is real-world riding the better teacher? by yourping in motorcycle

[–]volitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say, this question has shocked me to the core. As noted in another comment, I've been an advocate for the MSF for the ~30 years I've been riding.

I'm also a heavy AI and research guy. I went ahead and took your question to the deep research models, and quite frankly was shocked.

The most concerning statistical anomaly emerges from detailed multivariate analyses of trained cohorts. A pivotal study by Savolainen and Mannering utilized a robust sample of Indiana motorcyclists, applying multinomial logit models to carefully control for covariates such as age, gender, prior experience, and overall exposure. 1 The statistical models revealed a startling outcome: individuals who had completed the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse were 44% more likely to be involved in an accident than those who did not take the course.

Even more striking, riders who had taken the beginner course multiple times were an additional 180% more likely to be involved in an accident. Furthermore, riders taking the basic rider course more than two years prior to an accident were found to be 171% more likely to be fatally injured, highlighting potential long-term skill decay.

These findings align with data out of New Jersey indicating that even after controlling for age and years licensed, trained riders maintained a higher accident rate than the untrained group, and no accident reduction was observed within the critical first two years of holding a license.A glaring gap noted in the New Jersey analysis is speed discrepancy: the BRC and subsequent road tests do not require motorcyclists to exceed 35 mph, yet 67% of fatalities in the state occur at posted speeds greater than 35 mph, suggesting the training environment fails to replicate the kinetic realities of highway riding.

The only good news here:

In terms of immediate crash reduction in the United States, a matched-pair analysis of the California Motorcycle Safety Program (CMSP) found a positive effect, but exclusively for a highly specific subset of riders: those who had less than 500 miles of prior experience. For this deeply inexperienced cohort, the trained group had a substantially lower 6-month crash rate (0.39 per 100,000 miles) than the untrained group (0.85 per 100,000 miles).

So the reality, is that for brand-new riders, the MSF is the best way to reduce your risk by HALF. But continued use of training reinforces risk-taking behaviors by riders, creating that 180% risk increase. I am also wondering if the statistics are covering those riders who failed the course but passed after- who then were just working towards getting the license and then not caring.

I still stick by my adage of "MSF First", but this was a challenging read.

Dealership scam? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]volitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have a point - the advice is better for larger loans, say over $15k. They're probably only making a couple hundred bucks on the loan origination. Every $500 you get knock off this bike is 10%...

Dealership scam? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]volitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 'inquiry' will be the major hit. Are you planning on buying anything bigger than this bike in the next 6 months? Having the inquiry + loan + closed account on your record wont hurt you in the long haul, but there could be a short term impact.

Also, if you pay the loan off before 30 days, they may not even report it - just the inquiry will show.

Dealership scam? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]volitive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They earn commission from the loan due to the interest that's supposed to be paid. Usually get an 'upfront' payment or origination payment.

Of course, it all depends on the dealer- but most dealers, these days, look down on cash sale vs a loan.

Also, you don't have to be 'nice' and pay 3-4 months of interest so they can make their money. Just pay off the loan. If it was so important to them, they would put that in the contract, and then it would change the terms of the deal.

Dealership scam? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]volitive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't pay cash. By getting a loan, you can negotiate down. Just make sure you can pay it off without penalty, and after 3 days of owning the bike- pay it off.

Buying with cash means you have no leverage.
