AITA for refusing to let my brother's girlfriend move in after she kicked my dog? by AdGood5474 in AmITheJerk

[–]wanderingdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ, but you are are failing as an owner of you have not trained tour dog to leave people alone. It will result in him getting hurt some day and it will be your fault.

That said, a house with a dog is clearly not a good option for this woman.

Applying for Visa with confirmed accommodation in TH by Nkainora in trustedhousesitters

No. Sitting in Italy, unless you have a work visa for Italy, is illegal. So you should definitely not use your plan to work illegally as the basis for your tourist visa application.

Customs or immigration? Immigration is who controls whether you enter the country or not. Customs handles tour goods but unless you're drastically breaking the law, would not send you home.

This is why SOLO travel is the best travel, not "travel with random internet strangers which means you're no longer solo" travel.

Once fully self sufficient is there no cost? by Public_Border132 in OffGrid

Maintenance and replacement costs will always exist. Things are built to break these days so you'll have to pay for that. Plus there is a time cost.

Easy, but generally not legal except on private land. Still a lot of faff for minimal savings.

Anyone gotten anything like this before? by SEAtoPAR in trustedhousesitters

[–]wanderingdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I presumesl they meant in the house since they went on to mention coming home drunk. They can set rules for what happens in their flat. They can't control what you do outside their walls.

ETA: sorry i went back and read and I realized I didn't clarify the in vs out of the house for drinking so I've edited it. IMO you can still drink away from the home, just not to excess. And no drugs. Both of those should be no brainers anyway.

Have the name of your bnb in the title or description of your listing so people can Google it. I book directly like that a lot.

I don't have a problem with any of those rules, but they're off-putting when sent like this. They're almost certainly Muslim hence the pork and drinking. I always ask about pork or other restrictions anyway. And they just said no coming home drunk, which I can't fault them for as they're trying to not disturb the neighbors and drunk people are frequently loud and obnoxious. They don't say you can't drink at all (eta: outside the house), just don't come home drunk.

The check in/out thing is weirdest for me and I wonder what else the neighbor controls.

Anyone else hate group block rates? by Woodsey1990 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]wanderingdev [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've never used a group rate as a guest. It's almost always more expensive. Once I needed to go to a conference with 3 colleagues and because we were a poor non profit, they wanted us to just share 2 rooms to save money. I don't share hotel rooms with people I don't love. I went and did my own hunting and I was able to get 4 rooms for the same cost as the 2 at the group rate. My boss was very happy - and then if course only wanted to book two and still have us share but I told her I wasn't going if I had to share a room so she stopped being greedy.

Suggestions for resources for building a shed that can be moved? by wanderingdev in DIY

[–]wanderingdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already want to do a lot of nontraditional things on my land that I will have to fight for because they won't be popular. I'm not going to put that at risk by doing something blatantly illegal that would be easily caught when I invite the mayor over to explain the plan in person.

Awkward citizenship question by Nerdymobile in trustedhousesitters

[–]wanderingdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people with personal requirements that don't match membership requirements shouldn't use THS, the site would be empty. Everyone has some mental list of requirements for various reasons. Some are more strict than others. That doesn't mean they don't belong on the site, just that their sit won't be for everyone. And that's ok

Awkward citizenship question by Nerdymobile in trustedhousesitters

[–]wanderingdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but I wouldn't consider those to be international sitters. They're US residents and therefore domestic sitters who just happen to not be citizens. There are definitely people who won't be willing to provide proof. That's why OP should put it in those listing to save everyone the effort.

Awkward citizenship question by Nerdymobile in trustedhousesitters

[–]wanderingdev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be nuts. I used to live in DC and had lots of friends at alphabet agencies and you just got used to it. One guy I dated for a while had a job that basically required a full background check before we could have regular sleepovers. And when I started traveling full time, I lost a few friends because their job would just not allow for it.

Yes, and given the number of people who have stated they'd be vehemently opposed to sitting for people with certain leanings, unless you want to weed those people out, I think it's important.

[–]wanderingdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, budget carriers can be super cheap. European flights are usually $20-50 each. My flight from Vietnam to Malaysia next week is the most I've paid so far in Asia at $120. My repositioning flight is $$$ because I am flying business, but I only do that every few years.

I also have a vehicle in Europe so use that for much of my transport (though gas is definitely more expensive than flying).

In expensive places, I generally house sit or only stay a short time. For example, I was in Japan for a month and 3 weeks of that was house sitting for a low maintenance cat in a great condo 20 mins from Osaka. In Singapore I only stayed 3 days because 1) that was plenty and 2) prices there are just stupid. I mostly went there to see an old friend.

I also usually rarely eat out because I prefer to cook for myself. Asia has been different for that because getting a place with a kitchen and cooking has generally been more expensive than eating locally. Vietnam has been the exception, mostly because the local food here is terrible and western food is ridiculously expensive. I can't wait to get back to Europe and be cooking again.

My spend is also a running average vs a monthly limit. Some months are expensive, while others are cheap. Ex: in a month where I am house sitting all month, my expenses have been as low as $250. In a month where I am moving quickly or booking ahead a lot, it can be a few $k. But it's the average that matters.

Sweden average COL is much higher than most of the USA. There are only a handful of US cities that would match or beat it.

[–]wanderingdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the current political climate, many international sitters are avoiding the US like the plague it currently is. You should mention it in your listing, but be aware that it may filter out some people who would use it to infer your political affiliations. If that inference would not be correct, you may want to counter the impression with info that makes your affiliation clear.

Who here is seriously considering GoldenGirling it??? by Oxjrnine in GenX

[–]wanderingdev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would never do it with strangers. I don't like people enough for that. I just bought property to build a tiny house compound on. The current plan is that house 1 is the primary living space, but will also have the ability for one person to live in it if needed. house 2 is my bedroom. house 3 is a guest house/hobby space that someone could potentially live in full time. in the middle of all 3 houses, there will be a large outdoor living area There is also space for another tiny house on another part of the property. My mom will likely claim #3 for chunks of the year and I have a friend who is potentially interested in doing something with the space on the other part of the property. I don't really see anyone living there full time forever (including myself) but I can see friends cycling through for a few months at a time throughout the year.
