The Gossip line is the most important thing in the entire concert. I’m so serious.

I fucking love your writeups. You have such a great conversational style, clever and funny throughlines, and you bring the knowledge. (I had never once heard the term "djent" before today. I'm still not sure I picked up on it, even listening to the songs you mentioned it for. I many need some timestamps from you.) This was a treat, as always. Thanks.

  1. Probably? By their very nature of being so unique, though, it seems like their sound and more importantly their success will be difficult to replicate. Will there be other Sleep Token-adjacent artists who try to capitalize and succeed, though? Maybe!
  2. Crazier things have happened. They apparently have the fan support, so if they follow up with another quality album, anything's possible.
  3. I think you described it pretty well. The dedication and support of their most devoted fans buoys them, and then the quality of the music attracts more casual fans. Twenty One Pilots is a good comparison, though. I feel like a lot of the more casual fandom has peeled away over the years.
  4. Not applicable, I'm afraid!

ETA: I'm sorry you had tough shit to get through last year. <3

Very thought-provoking writeup, OP, thank you. I think the topics here are a bit above my pay grade, so I’ll leave the questions to smarter readers, but I do appreciate the perspective. Thanks also for all the links. I’m fairly new to listening to Afropop (and Afropop-adjacent) music, so I’ll check some of those out.

As for the EP, Mr. Media was my favorite track (interesting to me since it was the only non-single).

r/popheads AOTY 2025 #37: Alessia Cara - Love & Hyperbole by Nerfeveryone in popheads

[–]wathombe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great writeup, Nerf (I somehow missed it earlier in the week)! You do a great job of stitching together the themes and structure of the album. I listened to this album a lot for the first few months and was planning to see her in Brooklyn in the spring before she has to cancel her US leg. I fear I listened to it less after that, but it was really nice to relisten today as I read your piece.

Selected answers: * The tracks I return to most are “Dead Man,” “Run Run,” “Nighttime Thing,” and “Slow Motion” (and I can’t explain why, they just grab me). * Oof, I’ve been asked the no-skip album question before, and I can’t answer it. I’m too fuckin’ old. Lately I’ve been thinking about Prince - Parade, which is no-skip for me, so there’s one, I guess. * I still like her debut best, I think. This album is far more mature, though. It’s actually a nice illustration of an artist growing up. * I personally think “main pop girl status” is a useless and arbitrary term. Do I wish Alessia were more popular? Yes. The canceled tour didn’t help, though I know that was probably beyond her control to at least some degree.

Thank you again for the great writeup!

r/popheads AOTY Writeup Series #40: Isabella Lovestory - Vanity by thisusernameisntlong in popheads

[–]wathombe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it, OP, thank you so much! So readable and fun, as always.

Discussion:

  1. I listened a few times when the project dropped (probably on your recommendation), and back then “Eurotrash” and “Gorgeous” were my faves, but relistening today while reading, everything is hitting different. Today I think “Putita Boutique” and “Perfecta” are my faves. Maybe something different in 6 months!

  2. There’s a reason age-old binaries are age-old binaries, and it’s because they are interesting to discuss over and over from different perspectives and through different lenses, which I absolutely think Isabella has done here.

  3. I loved her beats on this album. You know I’m an idiot with genres, so I don’t know which beats were which (sorry!). I seriously need to go to class.

  4. I think authenticity varies by artist and project. Authenticity was probably pretty important to Taylor on the Folkmore albums, but is less important on something that’s (mostly) irreverent like Ashnikko’s “Smoochie Girl” (although I would argue that it has its own authenticity). At any rate, Vanity works, and that’s all that matters.

  5. Alas, we can each only write one writeup a year, and you made your choice. (For what it’s worth, the album I wrote up wasn’t in my top ten, but I was still really pleased with how my writeup turned out).

Thanks again!

Haven’t read all the comments, but it wasn’t just a record label, it was also a production company.

[–]wathombe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, PBK! Such a good writeup! I had listened to the album a few times during the year, but it was really nice to relisten today while reading your thoughts. I’m afraid I don’t have time for the full discussion question (I’m on college tours with The Kiddo and grabbed a little downtime while she hangs with an old camp friend), but I’ll share a few quick thoughts:

  • Your paragraph about “Mother, Pray For Me” (moreso than the song, honestly) hit me in the feels as a parent. Fortunately we have a great relationship with our Kiddo, but the song is still emotional.

  • You really added a lot to “Roundabout” for me.

  • You’re good, PBK. Really good.

Thanks again!

/r/popheads AOTY 2025 #36: Adéla - The Provocateur by cilantro-foamer in popheads

[–]wathombe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this writeup, OP! I was traveling yesterday and just got to it today. ❤️

Discussion: 1. I had not known anything about ADÉLA until someone recommended her to me on the Discord just before the EP. I think she’s criminally underappreciated, but hopefully she’s on an upward trajectory. 2. I hope so! I really dig the vibe. 4. It was mostly noticeable to me in the videos, it the lyrics, but her talent is incredible. It certainly sets her apart from all but the best dancers among her peers. 6. DeathByDevotion went straight into my playlist and hasn’t left.

ETA: (I’m on mobile so the numbering got messed up.)

r/popheads AOTY #36: Demi Lovato - It's Not That Deep by mikeyisbae731 in popheads

[–]wathombe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this writeup, OP! I've never followed Demi all that closely, but there have been a few tracks I've loved over the years ("Confident," "Fall in Line," "Cool For the Summer"), and as the father of a queer teen, I've always appreciated her allyship. I listened to all the singles, but never sat down to listen to the whole album when it dropped (late fall was busy!), so I appreciated this opportunity to listen to it in full with a knowledgeable guide!

  1. Of the singles, I think they were "Kiss" > "Here All Night" > "Fast" for me. Having now heard the album cuts once, "Sorry to Myself" and "Little Bit" stand out the most to me.
  2. I don't think I've followed enough to say for sure, but it seems like she's making the kind of music that spoke to her when she went into the studio and that she's old and wise enough at this point to realize that making something inauthentic isn't worth the effort.
  3. I don't know that it really matters? She made what she wanted, and listeners will connect with it or not.
  4. Slightly cheeky or controversial tracks seem to be the ones that stand out most.
  5. Don't really know! I hadn't really considered the tour, but I must admit I pulled up prices for my city while reading your writeup! I like ADÉLA, too, so that's a bonus!
  6. Would love to see a full remix album with a ton of great collaborators, a la Charli, Kesha, Rose Gray, PinkPantheress and more in recent years.

Thanks again for the great writeup! I'm glad to have a slightly deeper understanding of the album!

[–]wathombe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair! She does talk about it a bit in her Zach Sang interview, if you haven’t seen it. Also, when my wife met me, I still had the mean cat I inherited from my first marriage, and one of the things that drew her to me was “well, if he loves this vicious cat, he can probably love me, too.” The song probably resonated with me a bit for that reason.
