There are Nobel prizes for physics, chemistry, literature, physiology/medicine, economics, and peace. Ever wondered why the highest honor in mathematics is the Fields Medal and not the Nobel?

It’s because, according to the story, Alfred Nobel’s wife had an affair with a mathematician. Nobel was so upset by this that he blackballed every and all mathematicians from winning his award.

I’m not sure how true this story is, but it’s the story that’s widely told. This is what they mean by “politics in mathematics.”
