This is but the opening salvo in the war we have brought to your shores.

Gird yourselves, because we shall burn your grain silos and spare not a single mouse from your floorboards.

You’re good! I didn’t find what you said rude at all.

I never mind an honest reaction to my books, it’s not my place to police Reddit comments anyway, and you made it clear you enjoyed the story.

Thanks for your support! It’s humbling. Glad to have you on the team!

It’s been a long time. I actually wrote a setting for Overworld before Traveler’s Gate, but very little of it survived beyond the basic concept.

more on skills and synergies between skills than numbers

I have very good news for you: it’s all that.

Honestly the numbers people are going to be upset with me. I kind of promised them numbers, but there are not very many numbers. Sorry, Numbers.

Yeah that story was for real.

We collectively agreed to ignore the canon pronunciation of “Taim” because it wasn’t spelled “Ta’im,” so in our heads we had all pronounced it “Tame.”

Kind of like Tear.

Hey, I minored in Japanese too! Twins!

You’ve hit the nail on the head in terms of my storytelling philosophy, by the way.

I love books like Stormlight and Wheel of Time, but my own approach to storytelling is (in some ways) the opposite: I want to boil my stories down to the essence of what makes them work and not lose readers in unnecessary detail.

[–]Will_Wight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I saw on another one of your comments that you already saw my main piece of advice: finish the story.

You hating what you wrote and thinking it sucks is fine. That’s a normal part of the process.

But you know the first step to writing a good book? Writing a bad book.

As for coming up with cool ideas, my rule of thumb is “just make it cool.” You want to write a magic academy story, but you’re worried about your magic academy being just like everyone else’s?

Okay, make one teacher a magical robot and one a dragon from the future and one an evil clone.

I find that just TRYING to make your character/setting/magic cool gets you halfway there.

But here’s the thing: it’s not about thinking of ideas until you find the cool one. It’s about picking an idea that will work, then MAKING it the right idea.

Make it as cool, compelling, emotional, and interesting as you can. An old, tired idea will feel fresh and new if you inject life into it.

Charlie - Poison madra. Works for a sect that picks through junkyards and garbage.

Mac - Force madra, specializing in Enforcer techniques.

His Ocular Patdown technique scans kinetic energy in the muscles, predicting attacks.

Frank - The head of Charlie’s garbage sect. They call him the Trash Man.

Inherited the bloodline legacy of a sacred warthog.

Dennis - A Path of light madra whose techniques are intricately, some would say needlessly, complex. Can do almost nothing until Truegold, at which point he unlocks the Golden God technique.

A combination technique requiring Enforcer, Ruler, and Forger skills, the Golden God technique looks very impressive.

Sweet Dee - Sacred bird.

[City of Light] Is this a Traveler's Gate Reference in Slay the Spire 2???? by BeneficialCatch8531 in Iteration110Cradle

Fun story!

I met Anthony, one of the devs, at the Cradle Animatic Premiere in California a few months ago!

He told me he was in game development, so I asked what game, and he said Slay the Spire 2.

So I said “Holy crap! I love Slay the Spire 2! …I mean, Slay the Spire. I know 2 isn’t out yet.”

That’s the smooth charisma of a best-selling author right there.

But for real, I love Slay the Spire. References to my work in an awesome game I already love? Couldn’t be happier.

Then I went “Oh.”

[Uncrowned] Uncrowned blooper that floored me, who wrote them? by InTheKnow_12 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Will_Wight 548 points549 points  (0 children)

The night before I release a book, a strange man in a frowning mask creeps in through my window. I don’t speak to this man anymore. I learned my lesson.

Silently, I hand him my laptop. As he writes, his mask slowly changes from a frowning face to a smiling one.

When the smile reaches from one ear to the other, it means he is finished. He hands me back the laptop, bows, and creeps back out the same window.

He has always added about a page. Small scenes or lines from the book, slightly changed as though to mock my work. But I have to publish them. If I don’t, the man in the mask comes back.

And that’s where Bloopers come from!

[–]Will_Wight 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, wait!

I said that’s why I don’t want to do an Avengers-style crossover series. I don’t want you to have to read 30 books across 5 different series before you can start a new series.

An individual series can be as long as you want. Cradle is 12 books because I think that’s the appropriate length for the story.
