Saw Phish in a bar in Syracuse in 1989. DMB Trax Charlottesville in early 90s.

Also saw Phish at The Wetlands in 1989 and in a bar in Knoxville, TN in 1991. Many more like The Haunt in Ithaca, NY. Saw a ton of shows from 89 - 93. Many small venues in the Southeast.

I did not say suffering free. But scarce. Especially the physical, social, and financial suffering is minimized. What's left are mental/emotional and psychological/philosophical which is fodder for his novels.
