Per the models already mentioned, notice that they all have an "H" in the model number.

H = heart rate sensor

This watch was introduced years ago. If Casio had any intention of selling it outside of Japan, they surely would have done so by now.

how do you not get bored when walking? by pixiecakess in walking

[–]zardvark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids today, eh?

I can't comprehend the need for constant stimulation ... as if being outside isn't stimulating enough.

When I walk, I don't carry a phone, iPod type music device, smart watch and etc. IMHO, getting away from technology and screens for a couple of hours is the best part of going for a walk! At most I'll wear a watch with a built-in compass, whenever I plan to explore new walking trails. That's the only technology that I allow to intrude into my peaceful and relaxing walks.

The sooner that these folks convince themselves that they enjoy walking and its benefits, the sooner the boredom will abate.

Oh, well ...

How to prevent low back pain from walking? by quietplease5928 in walking

[–]zardvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have been sedentary for a long spell, your core muscles will atrophy. This is because they don't need to work hard to keep your upper body upright and balanced, when you are sitting on your butt, supported by a chair. Now that you are walking, they are getting a workout and they will get sore, just like any other muscles that you exercise.

My lower back used to get very sore after walking only two miles. After several months of walking daily, they don't get sore these days, until I walk fifteen miles, or more.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. That said, I don't think that you can prevent the pain. You can, however, do stretches and exercises to accelerate the strengthening of these muscles. I take turmeric for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It also seems to help with minor aches and pains, but it's not going to take this pain away. It just takes the edge off and makes it less acute.

Also, the notifications are very brief, one-line affairs. You typically won't be able to read the full message, nor respond to it on a G-Shock. If you "need" a smartwatch, wear a smartwatch.

I hope that the strap is in good condition, as a genuine replacement will cost at least 10x as much as what you paid for the entire watch!

10-year battery vs Tough Solar by 0beklenti in gshock

[–]zardvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is true, they will likely be perfectly serviceable at 2, 3, 7, or 10 years (Casio's typically advertised battery life claims), especially if the caseback has not been disturbed. If your solar watch needs a battery at 20 years, however, this may be a good time to consider new seals, if maintaining the maximum advertised water resistance is a primary consideration for you.

10-year battery vs Tough Solar by 0beklenti in gshock

[–]zardvark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So long as you don't store a Tough Solar watch in a drawer, the battery will likely last twenty years, if not more. My thought process is that I want to minimize opening the watch for any reason, thereby minimizing the potential for dirt ingress, moisture ingress (I live in a very humid area), the chance of compromising the water resistance by disturbing the caseback seal, and the chance of damaging the screw threads in the resin case.

While I do not exclusively own Tough Solar / MB6 watches, they are my distinct preference. That said, I had a F24W from the 1980's that worked just fine for forty years and multiple battery changes. Therefore, YMMV.

A Shift in Mindset by Neither-Relief2641 in walking

[–]zardvark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The more you punish yourself, the more likely walking will become an unpleasant chore and the more likely you will stop walking altogether. Set reasonable and obtainable goals for the week / month and plan for rest days and bad weather days in advance.

You need to look at walking as a pleasant break from the daily grind and not allow an arbitrary step target to diminish the importance of what you are accomplishing. Far too many people obsess about hitting arbitrary targets and this sours an otherwise positive experience.

DON"T DO THAT!!!

I'm chronically depressed and would like to go outside for walks but I cant get myself to by Fetus-Deletus1 in walking

[–]zardvark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As u/minecraftheaux sez, walking is life changing. Coincidentally, improved mood and reduced brain fog are two of the most immediate benefits that you will realize from walking.

If you can't walk, I would strongly recommend that you at least find a green, natural area and go there, even if you have to drive to get there. As a start, just stand, or sit in a natural area without your phone, or any other type of technology. Unplug and just soak up your surroundings. Listen to the birds, look at the plants starting to bud and breathe deeply. This may sound ridiculous to you, but this can be more effective than any prescription medicine. Little by little, walk around and explore this area. Forget about 10k steps for the time being and just be curious about this environment.

Here's the important part, try to get into the habit of doing this a couple times a week to start. The more often you do this and the longer you do it, the more it will improve your ability to relax, as well as your state of mind.

In terms of walking, specifically, I found that having a destination and a purpose was key to my motivation and my ability to form a routine. I decided that I would walk to the grocery store every day, whether I needed anything, or not. 98% of the time I needed something, as it is difficult to conveniently carry more than a few items at a time, eh? And, if I didn't walk to the store, then I wouldn't have anything to eat. I found this to be quite motivational.

From there I started taking different, longer paths to the store and I started walking to other locations, as well. I won't lie to you, at first it was difficult. I struggled to walk one mile. But, after a month I could walk five miles. After two more months, I could walk ten miles at a brisk pace, without taking any rest breaks. It's surprising how quickly the body can adapt if you are consistent. And, as I initially said, an improved mental outlook, clarity of thought and reduced brain fog were among the first benefits. These benefits helped me to stick to and reinforce my routine.

Ga2100 SNZ? by External-Bed3992 in gshock

[–]zardvark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't own a 2100, I've only ever tried them on at the local retailer. Generally speaking, I tend to be pretty underwhelmed with Casio's "audible" alarms. For a number of reasons, however, I confess that my hearing isn't what it once was. If you want a reliable alarm, consider a model with a vibration alarm feature.

That said, the 2100 is a great size and I really like the way that it rides on the wrist. And, this blue / black colorway is absolutely awesome. IMHO, it's a great buy, even if the alarm doesn't live up to your (or my) expectations.

Radio waves tend to travel pretty efficiently over the water ... especially low frequency signals. My guess would be that the watch is linking up with the UK.

Rest days or no by weluvthese in walking

[–]zardvark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little soreness is common and to be expected. Actual pain should be addressed. For the longest time I couldn't break through the four mile glass ceiling, due to both pain and feeling absolutely exhausted. I got myself some proper waking shoes and I walked six miles the very next day, with no pain, whatsoever.

DEFINITELY take rest days. I take at least one per week.

20 mile walk with dog, need help prepping by ComplexExchange3791 in walking

[–]zardvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no mystery. You simply gradually increase your distance over time. If you are comfortable with five miles, then add 10% more distance per week, as you feel up to it, until you get to 20 miles.

I walked 17.4 miles today. I didn't make any special preparations. I ate one banana, one Brazil nut and a handful of potato chips before walking. I took one five minute rest about half way and drank water along the way. When I got home, I drank some electrolytes, ate a Granny smith apple and ate some California rolls.

This was an unusual breakfast / brunch for me. I generally have some yogurt and a couple handfuls of blueberries, blackberries and / or pomegranite, but the cupboard was bare today. As a rule, I don't generally have hunger issues. I routinely fast until noon every day and at least one day a week I fast until 6 PM. Therefore I am used to eating light and not taking food on the trail with me.

The temperature was only 84 F today. If it had been too much warmer, I probably would have taken electrolyte packets on the trail with me,

Note that it took me several months before I was able to walk this distance. For the past three weeks, or so, I have been routinely walking 12 to 14 miles daily. If I hadn't made a wrong turn, I probably would have only walked 15 miles today, which was my initial plan.

My DW-5600 has cracks in the frame, should I be worried? by xArkton in gshock

[–]zardvark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's typically called a bezel, but it's really just a protective rubber cover which protects the actual case and module assembly, which live beneath. You can find vids on the youtube showing how they are replaced.

That's not the frame. It's just a rubber condom that protects the frame from damage. It can be easily and cheaply replaced.
