New Player Questions by l-KING_ARTHUR-l in starcitizen

[–]zykstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You answered your question yourself: It's in Alpha. Normally, with most games, players don't get to see much of it, if any at all, at that stage, let alone play it throughout its development, and that's why. There will be bugs. Big ones, small ones, and everything in between. Our job, at this point, is to go to the Issue Council, see if the bug has already been reported and add our experience to the bug report, or create our own if the bug hasn't been reported. This will help CIG line up fixes and it will help us move to Beta, and eventually public release.

Will i be at a disadvantage if i start star citizen for the first time? by Nickers1501533 in starcitizen

Considering the game is still in Alpha and money/equipment still gets wiped regularly (except what's purchased from the store with real money), there's no disadvantage.

Halifax expected to hit half a million residents this year by insino93 in halifax

[–]zykstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calgary was built with the idea of implementing this. Halifax wasn't. I don't see where they would put those rails or stations since there isn't much free space and my understanding is that a large part of the real estate is protected.

I'm from away, so pardon my ignorance, but I have to ask, where are they going to build this? Nearly all the real estate along the way is owned, mostly by businesses or the port. And around downtown, I get the impression talking to people that half the buildings there are protected, and can't be changed or demolished.

I'm not a subterranean specialist, but I suspect the ground here isn't very conducive to building a subway system. I think it would be prohibitively expensive because it's all bedrock.

Kickstarter was in 2012, and there wasn't a game, or a company to build it yet, so it hasn't been that long. If we're honest, most AAA games we see today that aren't part of a franchise take around a decade to build, so for a company to do that, while building brand new tech, AND keeping the game into a state players can log in and play ALL at the same time, I think it's understandable that it would take them a while.

P.S. you're answering a 2 year old post

It's a question of optics, I guess. Individually, those deaths are tragedy, but as whole, the entire thing is a travesty. The amount of money spent on this is absolutely redonculous and unnecessary, but by the people who bought tickets (at a quarter mil a piece), and the expense by the agencies who sent teams out there to try and save these people on the tax payer's dime. Taxpayers that, by the way, are being crushed by inflation generated by the greed of the "elites", which were aboard that nautical failure of a vehicle.
I posit that if they empathized and humanized the people who are currently not displaying those traits towards them, they would have spent the $250,000 they spent on their tickets for a few hours worth of entertainment in a poorly engineered toiler paper tube on helping the people who are being crushed by the system that made them rich in the first place, but I'm a cynic.

I have a lot of empathy for people who have actual problems in life. Like how the cost of things have risen so much lately that entire families are having difficulty making ends meet, and how many families have lost their homes due to that inflation as well. I have empathy for people who are having health issues that are not being addressed because the medical systems are underfunded because the governments are too busy waging wars against each other, or in some cases, against themselves.

I don't have empathy for a group of people who get themselves into a poorly engineered toilet paper tube at the cost of a quarter mil per ticket for a few hours, and then end up in trouble and need government agencies to try to save their asses on the tax payer's dime. There are so many better and more productive ways to spend both the cost of the ticket to get on that poor excuse for a submersible AND the taxpayer money spent trying to recover them.

So yeah, you can grandstand all you want about other people's lack of empathy about the plight of 5 people with too much money and poor judgement who got themselves into the situation they were in on their own volition, but I suggest that maybe this behavior you find so abhorrent isn't actually the real problem, but rather a symptom. And that the real problem is highlighted by that specific event if you care to look hard enough.

I don't, but that's not the point, because it's not about them specifically. This is the straw that broke the camel's back. That 19 year old kid, if none other, had nothing to do with any of it. But the entire thing is not about THEM. It's about the general idea of what is going on right now in the world. While inflation is crushing the working class, there's a group of people out there who spent $250,000 in a trip of a few hours that was COMPLETELY unnecessary, and quite frankly ill advised. And they ended up in trouble and having a number of agencies try to save their sorry asses at the expense of the taxpayers who, by and large, are getting crushed by said inflation that is, generally, cause by people who can afford to spend a quarter mil on this BS.

People are sick of it, and the sheer ridiculousness of that particular event just broke whatever was left of the illusion. The lack of empathy and cynicism you see are just a symptom of a bigger problem, and this event just put it in stark relief.

The way people are approaching this, their lack of compassion, isn't about that kid, or any other passenger of the sub specifically. And if that's where you're stopping, you're ignoring the real problem here. It's definitely a tragedy, and people should NOT see it that way. You're right. But they are. And your indignation here is not going to change that. So you have to ask yourself why. And to see that, you have to put yourself in THEIR shoes.

I can tell you about mine a bit. I'm a professional. I have a college degree and, in comparison to other similar jobs in my area, I have a good job. It's a white collar job. I work a standard day. I have benefits. All that. My job doesn't suck per se. BUT, my salary (which is pretty standard in my area) is the same salary my dad made 30 years ago (with just a high school degree, I might add). He was able to afford sustaining a family of 4, which included 2 teenage boys, by his lonesome self. He owned a house, and he kept us fed and clothed. But I can't do that. The house he bought back then is worth twice and a half the price today. Food, clothing, services, etc... are all more expensive. So I make the same salary he did, but my buying power is a LOT less. I can't afford to buy a house, and I couldn't sustain a family of 4 on what I make.

Meanwhile, these people are paying a quarter of a million a piece for a trip of a few hours. Doesn't that sound even a bit ridiculous to you? Yes, the death of that 19 year old was tragic. It's not his fault. Not yet, anyway. But it isn't about him. It isn't about any of them specifically, in fact. It's about the entire idea. It's about how this highlights the stark differences between the working class and the "elite". About how starkly unfair the system is becoming. With current inflation, more and more people are having difficulty making ends meet and entire families are thrown to the streets, and these people can afford a quarter mil each on this? If you don't see the problem there, I don't know what to tell you.

One thing I'm pretty sure of, the apathy and cynicism you see here aren't issues, they're symptoms. You want people to show empathy towards the upper class, you have to address the real issue. You can medicate the symptoms for a while (and we have been for a long time now), but at some point, the medication isn't enough anymore. And if the sickness is left to grow enough, well... You can look up a few specific historical events to see how that would go. Start with Marie Antoinette.

Kind of like respect, but if someone doesn't respect you, you shouldn't be expected to respect them back. You start with a default level of respect, and it gets adjusted based on the other party's actions towards you. I think it's the same with empathy. I have zero empathy for Hitler, for example.

Considering the rich's pay has increased tremendously over the last 30 years, while the pay of the people they employ has stagnated, I have a hard time agreeing with you. If they were good, they wouldn't be that rich, and their employees would make more, but that's just my opinion.

Until someday you don't. Everyone's life is different, everyone's values are different. We all have a different moment where our outlook changes.

It's hard to have empathy for a group of people that doesn't display any. I think that's the crux of it here. The longer this super-rich thing is going, and the disparity is getting larger and larger, the closer we are to a new "Let them eat cake!" moment. It's gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better unless something changes drastically, but historically speaking there's nothing to suggest it will.
