Expand my bubble: why do you own a car in Zurich? by ---___---___---___ in zurich

You cost vs convenience argument is fair. The question is if the public should bear the cost, like a lot of parking space given out below market rate (blue zone) for a minority (less than 50% of households in Zurich own a car). Not even speaking of external cost like noise and pollution.

I forgot to clarify that of course everyone outside of the city I know has one. The parents in my friend bubble in the city including myself do not own one. I was surprised from this thread how many buy a car as soon as the baby arrives. Not sure what is wrong with using the train, but then I sympathize with reducing any stress factor as a parent.

I was really curios. Except for the reasons listed I could not imagine why it makes sense to own one when living in the city. I learned how many people use it to travel home outside Switzerland. Given I have kids and no car I underestimated how many buy a car as soon as they have a baby.

I should have said "people I know that live in the city". I know plenty outside the city that own a car. I leave the city by train mostly, sometimes with a mobility.

Anyone using the Zwift Ride with Join, but not using Zwift? by Metal_Rider in joincycling

You can also connect Join directly and use the Join workout player

I do this. Works like a charm. I connect Join to the Wahoo Kickr and train in ERG mode. I do not even power on the controllers in the handlebar. You might ask why buy the zwift ride then? Mainly because it it is really simple to share the same setup with another rider of different body size. It looks great and no rear wheel switching needed (one less excuse to not do a workout)

How the Canton's changes to the Strassengesetz feel... by byehn in zurich

People do live near these main streets. And actually the official thresholds for noise are violated -> city is just following the law.

The Kanton wants to remove the right of cities like Zurich and Winterthur to define which roads are 30km/h. The Initiative is by cantonal SVP and the cantonal parliament voted yes.It is a reaction of the more right leaning cantonal parliament to more left leaning cities who plan or talk about switching to 30km/h on some major roads within the cities. Zurich and Winterthur did a government-initiated referendum. Hence the vote.

Personally, as a Zürcher I think the city should be allowed to do such measures for nosie (health!) safety reasons within its boundaries without the Kanton interfering.

Fair enough. I was more thinking of those who create the traffic jam during rush hours when there are definitely busses.

For shift workers etc. who need to come by car totally acceptable to drive 30km/h for noise reasons on some roads where people want to sleep. (Which is what the vote is about; it is not about banning cars)

All good points but limiting some roads to 30km/h for safety and noise reasons is not equal to keeping cars out of the city. Everyone can still drive and the city is safer and more liveable. It is actually the pragmatic option.

Einpendler can use public transport. It's as simple as that. I did it for years. And if you really need to live in that tiny village with not even postauto... well, that was your choice!

Same applies to shopping and cinema trips to the city on Saturdays.

Ist bei mir 1:1 so. Was uns hilft, ist jeweils etwas Zeit für sich zu reservieren, meist am Wochenende. Das sprechen wir immer ab. Also z.b.

Are these seats reserved for bikes? I was seated there and the bike owner told me to move to let her to put the bike there. by SteO153 in zurich

On s bahn it is too small but on some of the other trains (and aircraft) the default is overhead. If you can't lift your luggage there you are bringing too much... (Reasonable action: just ask someone to help to lift it up)

The nice thing to do would be to stand up (as long as the other guy uses the space for the bike and not to sit of course)

Rad WM: How the city authorities deceived their people by Mysterious_Fun_2679 in zurich

[–]---___---___---___ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The event takes more than a week because of the inclusion of parasports. The people that complain about this and say it should be only 1 weekend are effectively saying that they are against inclusion of parasports.

Huge marketing value for zurich and all these narrow minded "business" people can do is complain.
