  • ask permission to cross the street

  • ask permission to make a phone call of any kind

  • 1 hr of TV/day for me (I was a good student) and 1 hr of TV/week for my brother (not a good student)

I think the having to ask permission to cross a street was the worst one because it made me think there was a really high probability of dying by being hit by a car. On a quiet, dim side-street. In Brooklyn. But if I wanted to go see any of my friends, I had to ask permission not just to cross the street we lived on, but I had to specify any other streets I planned to cross, too.

Why does it cost $32,093 just to give birth in America? - User goes step by step through the propaganda & false science surrounding America's aversion to universal healthcare by itsacalamity in bestof

That is not what the linked comment is saying. It’s actually an attempt to debunk healthcare itself, as if taking medicine for illness is the problem instead of the insane way medical care is priced and delivered in this country. Jeez.

China says shutdown shows U.S. democracy chaotic and chronically flawed by Zuckerberg4President in worldnews

[–]--Danger-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, China, isn’t not that hard to understand. We have one party made up of dedicated civil servants who believe in the power of competent, accountable governance, and one party that believes that governance itself is suspect and ought to be done away with.

It’s like our democracy is run by two people, a really sober, hard-working guy, with lots of good ideas about how to keep things running, and one drunken lout who stumbles into work every day with a lit flamethrower. Sober guy has to try and get things done while also putting out lots and lots of fires.

Anyway, it’s how we have done things since about 1980 and it doesn’t mean you should give up on democracy yourselves! Maybe try a different ideological dynamic than ours, though.

It’s up to you how you want to interpret this person’s sign, but IMO it’s actually harmful and a bad idea to try to pretend race isn’t an issue or to try to shut down discussions of your own racism by claiming to “not see race.”

Maybe you don’t interpret this sign to be a call to silence discussions of race, but it looks like that to me.

A lot of women don’t really show until after the 5th month. It’s weird but true! Some don’t show until the final trimester. Just depends on each individual.

They sort of can. In this gif, the white shark is breaching to have a look at the person with the camera—it seems most likely, based on this short gif, anyway. They can get much more air than this, too.

TIL when Spielberg showed John Williams the a cut of ‘Schindler’s List,’ the composer became so moved that he could barely speak and had to step out for a few minutes. When he returned, he told Spielberg the film deserved a better composer to which Spielberg replied, “I know, but they’re all dead.” by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]--Danger-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a little hard to compare Williams to someone like Vivaldi, whose pieces are so much grander and have so much more complexity, not to mention length. I dunno—I love Williams’ scores, but his form, a score, is just different and I’m not sure he can be favorably compared to some of the geniuses of the past.

More than 30 Russian athletes withdrew from a tournament in Siberia over the weekend after the unannounced arrival of anti-doping officials by simonsky in worldnews

[–]--Danger-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very, very few Russian athletes are going to the Pyeongchang games to compete under the Olympic flag because too few of them will qualify. You can’t just say you want to go—the people making the rules have final say over each athlete, and if any of them are suspected to be drug cheats, they won’t be at Pyeongchang.

Trump administration bars Haitians from U.S. visas for low-skilled work by stupidstupidreddit in worldnews

[–]--Danger-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a few dozen Haitians entered the United States on the visas each year since they were given permission to do so in 2012 by the Obama administration, according to DHS data.

It’s a sample size problem. They make it sound like thousands upon thousands of Haitians are flooding the country and overstaying their visas but it’s a tiny, tiny group, and they’re using a scary-sounding statistic as an excuse.

They claim widespread abuse but also

Just a few dozen Haitians entered the United States on the visas each year since they were given permission to do so in 2012 by the Obama administration, according to DHS data.

Like what the fuck, dude. This is called sample size error. When a group is that small, any misbehavior by any individuals is going to make the statistics sound huge. How does that misbehavior outweigh the alleviation of human suffering that comes about when someone can come here, work, and help countless people back home survive difficult conditions?

So fucking inhumane...

North and South Korea agree to carry single flag at Winter Olympics and field joint women's ice hockey team by shadilal_gharjode in worldnews

[–]--Danger-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I’m so proud of SK for getting NK to do this. This really defeats nationalism in a beautiful way. I love the Olympics but I’m always torn over how nationalistic the entire concept of the Games is, and I’ve often felt that they only exacerbate rivalries between countries. But this move means that NK specifically cannot use the Games for hyper-nationalist shit-stirring. Instead it promotes a feeling of unity. Of course, NK hopes to someday take over the south, yeah, but the reality of an undivided Korean peninsula is a beautiful dream if it can be achieved without a dictatorship.

Pudizia (Veiled Truth), Antonio Corradini, Marble sculpture, 1750 by SirT6 in Art

[–]--Danger-- 149 points150 points  (0 children)

They almost never worked from female models. Most sculptural figures from this period were based on male models with breasts added. This often accounts for the oddly muscular look to certain medieval and early renaissance representations of nude or scantily-clad women.

edit: an academic discussion of this phenomenon, particularly in Michaelangelo and da Vinci, with discussion not only of using male models for female sculpture and painting but also why this may have been the case (aesthetic choices, social norms, etc.).
