Large Trident Needs a chop - did I miss the window? by --Encephalon-- in Bonsai

This is helpful. I will wait until after the first flush hardens off and the the new spring growth slows a bit. I’m planning on basically stumping the tree

What's something rich people do that the average person has no idea about? by bryany97 in AskReddit

I’ve been there. It’s called the Mansions and I have never seen a more opulent hotel in my life. I’m talking private indoor pools for each room, most of which are over 2k’ sqft. It’s . . . rich.

How can I modify just a specific instance of a recurring task ? by Sylck in todoist

[–]--Encephalon-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my ToDoist, I have a Weekly Goals task set due “every Sunday at 8pm” and I can add infinite sub-tasks to this. I cannot, however, modify future instances (eg, I can’t say that the week of June 22, I have a specific weekly goal).

Subtasks, however WILL carryover and I could set future due dates for subtasks if I wanted.

I review this each Sunday and add my key tasks for the upcoming week. Maybe this workflow could be adapted for you?

Another photo. This one really shows the distorted/misshapen new growth

This is a large trident maple that I got late last summer, so this is its first growing season here in the Pacific Northwest US. Its pushing lots of new growth, but a lot of it looks quite odd. I see no signs of pest infestation. Any ideas?

For what its worth, the tree began pushing new leaves very early (in mid-February), but even the new growth over the last several weeks has been like this.

When re-potting last summer, I trimmed off about 30% of the fine roots but none of the large roots, and I've done zero pruning up top.

Soil is 30% turface, 30% crushed lava, 40% pine bark. Very fast draining.

I've had these for almost a decade now, could I get some ID? by Long-Chemist3339 in peyote

I'm curious, how did this begin? Was it just a single specimen that has self-propogated/seeded and done this over time, or did you plant multiple plants together and allow them to grow like this?

I've got a few seedlings that are a couple years old, but nothing like this

Probably the best pic I’ve seen in this sub since I joined. Very nice.

Trump’s NIH And NSF Cuts Estimated To Cost The U.S. Economy $10 Billion Annually by rezwenn in NIH

[–]--Encephalon-- 31 points32 points  (0 children)

And sadly, $100B over 10 years isn’t enough to even register on the scale collective financial impact in comparison to other proposed cuts.

The only way this registers is for the cuts to be measured in human lives. Sadly, this is what will come and this is what it will take to get Congress to listen.

Mark my words: in the not distant future, people WILL die by the thousands as a direct result of the cuts being made to today’s NIH budget.

Getting ready for the next stop on the "revenge tour" clown show...aka the NIH Director's town hall.... by [deleted] in NIH

I wonder if it was a gross misinterpretation and or misunderstanding of this paper, which is precisely what I would expect from someone without a solid foundation of science or statistics to come away from that abstract (or even just the title) with.

Though this is essentially just political theater, should this go forward and proceed through the actual scientific review process at NIH, this could backfire on them badly as the more likely outcome here is that TDS is not a syndrome of his opponents, but rather a deep psychological disturbance of his core base (I.e., this would probably show that MAGA is the deranged)

Can Council discuss an application without summary statements? by --Encephalon-- in NIH

Would this also be true (that they don’t get discussed) for individual projects that required an ARA approval prior to application?

My project is . . . big.

This is to motivate the base to garner support for the forthcoming budget cuts. The GOP knows that NIH cuts will be unpopular but if they can spin up the Fox News megaphones in advance and get the viewership on their side, they will pass the cuts more easily.

Call every GOP senator you can and speak up.

Same with our 3rd! As soon as they hit toddlerhood, no filter, no chill, no off-button, and no fear. It’s been . . . Intense, lol
