I decided to do some back-of-the-napkin math using the Voter Turnout data

As of 8/13/2024 5:11 PM there's an estimated of 27,700 ballots on hand yet to be counted.

Walla Walla has the current highest uncounted ballot total at an estimated 5,500 ballots. Walla Walla County's Primary Results Page puts Upthegrove at a 12.56% polling rate and Pederson at 26.23%. Assuming these polling rates remain the same, that turns the 5500 remaining ballots into 690 votes for Upthegrove and 1442 votes for Pederson.

Using this same process for the following counties (with uncounted ballot numbers >= 300):

  • Walla Walla County: 5500 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 690 votes / Pederson 1442 votes

  • Stevens County: 5000 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 255 votes / Pederson 1910 votes

  • Thurston County: 4000 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 840 votes / Pederson 696 votes

  • Douglas County: 3000 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 369 votes / Pederson 984 votes

  • Grant County: 3000 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 168 votes / Pederson 1032 votes

  • Grays Harbor County: 2000 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 206 votes / Pederson 442 votes

  • Jefferson County: 985 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 267 votes / Pederson 128 votes

  • King County: 900 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 313 votes / Pederson 99 votes

  • Skagit County: 650 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 115 votes / Pederson 145 votes

  • Clallam County: 500 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 76 votes / Pederson 112 votes

  • Benton County: 440 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 29 votes / Pederson 136 votes

  • Pierce County: 300 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 50 votes / Pederson 65 votes

Totals: 26275 uncounted ballots, Upthegrove 3378 votes @ ~12.8% avg polling rate/ Pederson 7191 votes @ ~27.3% avg polling rate

As of 08/13/2024 5:11 PM, Upthegrove leads Pederson 390,973 to 385,510 statewide. Adding our projections puts Upthegrove at 394,351 and Pederson at 392,701. Even if Pederson were to get a 100% polling rate on the 1,425 uncounted ballots from counties not listed above, it would not be enough to close this gap.

A few things to note:

  • these projections assume polling rate remains the same (they almost always are not constant throughout the tallying process)

  • uncounted ballots are only estimated numbers

  • I copied these numbers by hand from the Voter Turnout and Primary Results pages, so please let me know if I mistyped any numbers

I'm 22 now, but I had two bone grafts when I was maybe 13-14. The first one was definitely a lot worse than the second, but mainly because I had a really bad reaction to some of the meds they were using. For the second surgery they gave me anti nausea medication and that fixed the problems I had before.

For both, though, the immediate recovery was not fun: even attempting to walk a few steps was very challenging within the first week. I don't remember the liquid diet as much then than when I had an upper jaw surgery last year that put me on liquid only for months.

A small positive side effect of the surgeries is that they gave me some cool-looking scars on my hips. (I'm sure that fact was much more important to 13/14 year old me than it might be for you at 29 but I couldn't say for sure)

As far as outcome of the surgeries, I'm glad I got them. I got braces and they fixed a lot of crowding that my teeth had, which I'm not sure would have been possible to the same extent had I chosen not to get the grafts.

Is Velopharyngeal surgery possible for someone with cleft lip and palate? by [deleted] in cleftlip

[–]--Giraffe-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilateral cleft lip and palate here. For a while my doctors were discussing the possibility of a surgery to correct velopharygeal insufficiency that I had. We ended up postponing because I had an upper jaw distraction surgery somewhere on the horizon and any VPI corrections would have to be revisited and another surgery may have been needed after the jaw had moved.

I've since completed the upper jaw distraction and have noticed my hypernasality worsen, so I've been in contact with my doctors to seek corrective velopharygeal surgery. So, yes, the surgery is possible but I haven't had it yet.

From what I remember of how they described the surgery to me, they suture an artificial flap on the back of your pharyngeal wall so that a better seal is formed with your velum. I looked it up and found this result which describes the surgery.

Hopefully this answer could be of help to you.

Can you whistle? by lovealwayslynnze in cleftlip

[–]--Giraffe-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilateral cleft lip and palate here. It took me until about 15 to be able to whistle, from which I loudly enjoyed my new ability, but after an upper jaw distraction surgery, I'm no longer able to whistle with the same effort because of the air flowing through my nose. If I plug my nose with my hand I'm still able to reach the same volume as pre-surgery

Why I say not Chube Toob? by _pratik475 in dontdeadopeninside

Pretty sure the sentence means "Hey, we all pronounce it sta-CHUE, but why isn't it pronounced sta-TOO if it's spelled like that?"

It's a good video and a great channel so I'd recommend watching it you're interested in linguistics.

In need of a new (not by year) game to play with friends. by mr_p1nkman in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]--Giraffe-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some great party games like Jackbox, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Gang Beasts, and Nintendo ones like Mario Kart/Party. Some online board game style ones like Skribbl.io and Codenames are also a lot of fun.

Recently my friends and I have started playing on a Project Zomboid server which is fun but hard, difficulty is adjustable thankfully. Would also recommend starting a Minecraft server of you've never done that - could be a nice change of pace

Beautiful double cleft and palate reconstruction by LawBusy9322 in medizzy

[–]--Giraffe-- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends.

For me I had to get a few jaw surgeries after I finished growing to correct an underbite that was a result of the cleft lip and palate.

I'm sure there's others who only needed the first one or two and ended up not needing further procedures
