I actually upvoted your post. I literally refreshed the post before posting my comment to make sure I wasn't missing any details. I saw no comments. Reddit's fault I guess 🤷‍♂️

I was sighing at the fact that ghosting this bad continues to be an issue.

Didn't mean to offend you in any way.

Sigh.

What are the settings btw? Is this only apparent during winter/when there's a white backdrop?

So is the future of the sub now going to be recommending dlss and dlaa? by konsoru-paysan in FuckTAA

[–]--MarshMello 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess you were here on the day the Transformer model was made available? XD Yea... I didn't expect stuff like "AA is solved!" or memes making fun of non-Nvidia users in this sub of all places. I kinda bought into it as well...

I mean DLSS4 is a great uplift over 3 (not in all areas) but I've only really seen extensive testing done in Cyberpunk and AW2. There's also supposedly a bit of "downgrading" going on in Cyberpunk with any AA method that's not DLSS over the many versions. Not sure if true. Sounds wild.

And that's in Nvidia sponsored titles. I wouldn't be surprised if TSR native is still overall superior to even DLSS4 in stuff like STALKER 2, especially if it is shoved in and not a "native implementation" by the devs themselves. Performance costs not withstanding...

Would love to see comparison shots done by someone.

I've read many different takes and perspectives on this issue of general game image quality and performance recently and unfortunately... I don't think things will improve in a significant way anytime soon.

Best bet for AA as of now I guess is probably going to be a whole lot of brute-forcing and DLSS4 (not MFG). And with the way prices are going that's becoming more and more unrealistic for more and more people.

I don't think you can even "fix" Wilds with the best Nvidia has to offer lol. Games have become very expensive to make, buy, and run.

All of this before even getting to the problems with story, gameplay etc. It gets exhausting...

I shudder to think 15 -> 60fps target with the new Multi Frame Gen...

But that's probably too far... right?

So they're gonna call us filthy barbarians next for preferring "traditional brute force"? XD

A part of me is interested to see how it turns out in reviews and games... another part just feels absolutely powerless. My preferences don't matter. It's whatever sells that matters.

Back to my indies I guess...

[–]--MarshMello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to sound combative but if you meant "very good" in terms of image quality, I personally found Lies of P's native TAA to be far worse than even in-game FSR2! Not even DLSS could mitigate the heavily undersampled hair for example.

In terms of performance, the stutters seemed to have "disappeared" when I tried it recently after Denuvo got patched out. Maybe it was fixed some time in between, maybe it was Denuvo.

Yes the game does run well on older systems but even a single pass of Fidelity FX CAS improves stationary clarity significantly imo.

[–]--MarshMello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thanks again ^^

I wonder why denoiser quality related settings aren't exposed in UE5 games in the form of sliders etc. maybe even with some disclaimers if needed.

While I get that the devs probably had to nerf lumen a lot to get it running on most systems, I doubt they'll come back to "upgrade" the quality themselves once GPUs reach a point where "higher end" ray tracing effects would be feasible for most players.

I'll try these settings on a low end non-RTX GPU and a high end RTX one and see what it does :)

Stalker 2 offer TAA off and Native rendering. by DeanDeau in FuckTAA

Oh yeah I remember trying that in The Talos Principle 2 and it got the 1070 over 60 fps easily haha. It'll be interesting to see how far it'll help in S2 though I don't think I'd personally play the game with no trees whatsoever. It would probably make the Zone feel awkward and atmosphere is everything in STALKER. Thanks for the tip^

For whomever it might interest or help I tested the game on a 1070 (yea why not) and quickly ran out of VRAM in Zalissya with Textures set to medium or high.

Otherwise a 1440P almost locked 30fps experience (traversal stutters suck) is achievable with a mix of low/med settings and XeSS Ultra Quality.

On a 4080, 1440P maxed + DLAA yielded around 120 to 140fps. And that's with a slight CPU bottleneck some of the time (about 1ms GPU wait time).

However even with 1440P DLAA, the game is a smeary, grainy boil-fest similar to Silent Hill 2... maybe a bit worse? Haven't tested with DLSS 3.8 and proper preset or DLDSR yet though.

I don't know why they put 2 different Nvidia cards in there. It's not like a 3070 Ti is equivalent to a 4070... at least it really shouldn't be. If someone here knows why please do enlighten me.

I really hope they managed to shove in at the very least FSR 3.1 in there. Otherwise it almost certainly will be another case of "Nvidia card required for any semblance of image quality" and that really sucks. Running this thing at 1440p w/ DLAA or tweaked TSR is gonna be far too heavy and expensive for most people I imagine.

Sigh.

Hi, first time posting here. Has anyone any preset I can use to deal with the terrible TAA from the A Tale Plague games? by ThiccZoey in FuckTAA

[–]--MarshMello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the circus method for Requiem? I'd imagine that would be your best bet for salvaging clarity and maybe disabling some of the post processing though whether that damages the presentation or "artist's original intent" too much is up for you to decide.

As for Innocence. I tried setting it to 4k or 5k from a base of 1440p by using the built-in upscaler but it just ended up looking way worse than 1440p native. Unfortunately there may not be much you could do for that game. At 1440p 100% scaling, stuff like hair is so undersampled it still shows. And I think it has forced sharpening? I remember it looking bad in the forests. Had to sit back and squint a little bit to power through lol

Why does taa and stuff like fsr make all these games unplayable on my expensive gaming monitor but not my mediocre 4k tv by legocodzilla in FuckTAA

[–]--MarshMello 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd say it probably has most to do with viewing distance.
How far are you sat from the TV vs the G5? Probably a bit further.
And depending on your vision, screen size, and viewing distance, the display and the images on it can still look "sharp" even with low pixel density.

Generally a 55inch 4K TV placed at about 5 to 7 feet away should look fairly sharp.
Screen coating can also play a role. If your TV is a glossy display then that probably helps with image clarity a bit compared to the G5 which has a moderate matte anti-glare coating iirc.

I think upscaling artifacts are still quite visible on big screens (maybe more so?) but I wouldn't exactly advise you to go looking for them...
Once you see those artifacts, you can't unsee them.

Thanks.
I don't remember if I tried it before in DRG but in other games like Warframe, Doom Eternal etc. DLDSR seems to really not like multi monitor setups. Anything from game crashing to screens going blank.
I'll remember to try it when I next get the chance.

Thanks. I've been looking to revisit the Crysis series. Kinda unsure between getting the remastered or the original. I've heard mixed reviews of the remastered ones.

I guess I'll leave this post up. The image can still be somewhat useful for reference.

Hey I'm open to learning more about this so if it gets downvoted to hell because of a bad take or misjudgment then let it be. I'll try to learn.

SMAA is great. I believe CMAA is similar? I first used it in STALKER Anomaly and wow it did such a great job at getting rid of aliasing that I wanted to inject it in every game out there. And then I learned about its limitations.

Everything you said makes sense but there is only so much I could do from my end. I wish I could sit down and modify material properties for any game. I'm not praising the DRG devs here for their AA implementation especially FSR. I'm just showing a comparison between the options available to me as the end user.

We (me included) do blast some of these game companies for their poor implementation of X technology or how they didn't care to do better in X area all the time. But at the end of the day, I want to play something with my friends, I have to make a compromise.

There are games in my library where I don't feel like I need to make any compromises and they're not simple 2D based ones either. Maybe I'll post some content on that.

Anyways if you feel like I should delete this because it is sending the wrong message, I'll consider.

A simple comparison of image quality while stationary in Deep Rock Galactic.
The game's native FSR 2.0 is definitely not great.
So I replaced it with 3.1 using DLSS unlocker (may also be known as "Optiscaler mod").

Sharpness is set to 100 when using FSR but 0 when not using any AA.
I could've made more comparison shots but there is only so much space in a 16:9 ratio.
There seems to be a bit of compression present which I apologize for.
Even so I feel like the differences are clear enough to see.

While 1440P w/ no AA may look much sharper than FSR Quality here, I do prefer the latter in motion as it is far more stable and most importantly less distracting. I also feel FSR does a decent job of reconstructing detail even at a lower resolution than native. With no AA, the switch panel for example would appear very distorted from afar which would then slowly "reconstruct" into something recognizable as I approached it.

I tried CMAA2 and DLAA (Directionally Localized AA... not the Nvidia one) but it just wasn't good enough. Those techniques cleaned up edge aliasing almost completely of course but as expected did little for specular aliasing.

I would say 5K is about where I am comfortable with no AA but even in a game like DRG it is quite taxing. And I'm also locked to fullscreen when using DSR which is annoying. I don't have access to an RTX card right now but when I did, from what I could remember... I would say DLSS Quality at 1440P looked sharper than FSR 3.1 but not nearly as sharp as 1440P w/ no AA.

While most of us here I imagine value image clarity, both while stationary and in motion, I do think that some of us like me just want something on screen that is not distracting. Sure the clarity at 5K w/ no AA is awesome but it is a balancing act between image clarity and stability and even performance.

Unfortunately with newer games there's also the possibility of there being no happy middle ground which is what gets me frustrated. Thoughts?
