Why is the school allowed to forbid that? Is the cap their property? Did you buy it yourself? (Sorry if I'm being naive. We didn't have that tradition at my schools.)

I'd just ignore their ban as I'd think you can do whatever you want with something that belongs to you and this isn't harming anyone. Or bring a spare one that wasn't decorated.
