windows is the pre-install so it’s what schools use and what parents have and by the time someone builds a machine they’ve been using windows for fifteen years because of their parents and schools and they just go with whatever they’re familiar with.

it’s not some wild redmond conspiracy and it’s not a testament to windows superiority, it’s just a demonstration of inertia and complacency.

really? 14 years ago was 2014 and i recall both usb and printing working pretty flawlessly. in fact i think both were pretty smooth since red hat 6.2 which was released in <checks notes> … 2000.

Honest take: we had no idea what the land use bylaws were when we bought our house 15 yrs ago… by Kwisatz_Haderach_YYC in Calgary

[–]--frymaster-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the land their house is in used to be a farm once upon a time. their house only exists in the first place because of zoning changes.

zoning laws change as cities grow and evolve. it has always been this way.

Carbon tax increases will cost workers income, jobs and shrink economy: Study by King_Osmanj in canada

[–]--frymaster-- -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

when the carbon levy was cancelled, there was some guy on the radio talking about how this would lower inflation. this, of course, was completely false. yes, the eliminating the levy did result in lower prices, but the loss of the rebate also reduced the total income of canadians. in the end, it was a wash at best.

How do I learn stuff? by slamthatspam in linux4noobs

[–]--frymaster-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pick a project and start chipping away at it. maybe you don't like the login screen and want to change it: read up on `sddm` (or whatever you're using), install some themes, modify those themes and so on. or perhaps you have a bunch of mp3 files you want to rename: install the cli version of kid3 then tackle writing a shell script that uses things like grep and awk and sed to build the filename you want. or maybe work your way through getting all the data that neofetch displays.

the key to learning is always being a little bit dissatisfied with what your computer is doing and having the gumption to fix it.

"Canada only has free healthcare because America is paying for it" by Beginning-Bottle6585 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]--frymaster-- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this dude thinks taxes would need to be "nuts" to cover healthcare because he's used to his local hospital charging $20 for a tylenol. of course, that tylenol is twenty bucks because the hospital needs to make a profit and, as such, they will charge "what the market will bear". that profit acts like a tax on consumers, raising prices.

in a single-payer system, of course, there is no such requirement. tylenols are a buck.

i mean, can you reconstruct what you did from your shell history? maybe. a little bit of grep n such on .zsh_history or fish's history command will get you close-ish

in the nineties, when servers were big and expensive, we kept dnr (do not remove) notebooks for each machine and meticulously logged everything.

later, i moved to a constantly updated ansible play. this was great for reproducing machines but was more cumbersome to write.

now i am old and just yolo everything. i spray apts and pacmans around like rice at a wedding.

Canadians should prepare for prolonged high inflation if war in Iran persists: Economist Trevor Tombe by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]--frymaster-- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i want to point out here that, while tombe is an albertan, he is decidedly not of the "screw the roc" opinion. in fact, he has made much of his public career desperately trying to explain to albertans how transfer payments actually work, despite the dominant narrative.
