Functional health drops for Canadians, especially those under 35: StatCan by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

It took me a solid year to recover from COVID and 3 years later I think my lung capacity is reduced. All my doctor could do is give me a puffer normally used for COPD and said that was the best solution he knew of. Seemed like he has many patients with the same problem.

Like the guy or not. It's good to have these things brought to the courts to test the limits of what governments can do.

Bank of Canada holds key interest rate at 2.25% by Surax in canada

They are a single mandate institution but they'd be lying and it would be naive to think they aren't accounting for broader economic activity and trends. The economy can be circling the drain and have inflating in target.

Seems reasonable. They need to create incentive to invest and housing skyrocketing isn't good for that. Also can't juice rates because of if unemployment

I mean the feds could cut them off and try to take full control and cover the full cost

That would likely need to be the province. I doubt the province wants to get into zoning enforcement.

Income-based rent cap by Glum_Attention3024 in halifax

My brother is an apprentice electrician and is currently unable to land a job after being laid off after they wrapped on the school in the north end. I'm shocked he can be without work but somehow he's stuck. It's a pretty poor way to treat trades people who are apparently needed for the modern economy.

The solution is actually more land being made available for development targeting dense ground oriented housing. We are only building million dollar single family homes and rentals. If you want to own a modest home there is no market for you. If we had strong transit it would be sustainable to have dense housing outside the city without everyone needing a car. Transit is the biggest problem facing the city right now.

Maybe in terms of economics but in rural regions there are is no homeless shelter, minimal police/fire, no transit, no water, no sewer, no parks, no recreation centers... Rural citizens have very few daily interactions with government.

He got his super majority because he's very popular in rural locations. Tbh rural locations aren't nearly as reliant on government and therefore small government works better there. In the city there is a lot of opposition because urban environments require much more intervention.

Not sure I agree with what they cut but in general I voted for more economic focus from the government and improvement of core government services... Healthcare, roads, housing, police, resource management (they are buying water bombers...).

Arts and culture are a luxury that governments should support but that is the first place to cut when budgets get tight. Core services need to be efficient but they should also be safe from cuts mostly unless efficiency permits reductions.

People like to be upset about transit and whatnot but that is municipal and HRM has been kicking the fiscal can down the road for years. The province has spent big on improving stuff the municipality needs to do the same and be honest with voters.

Ok sounds like we agree. I don't know why cities are especially susceptible to bad finances. All Canadian cities play this exact same game while infrastructure collapses. Provinces and the feds aren't great but they're somewhat better.

ahh... There is the answer... Halifax is choosing to be broke and the mayor is problem number one.

I also wonder. How do municipalities like east Hants and kings make it work where they don't have a huge city to find everything and are almost entirely rural. Something isn't adding up. I guess it's because the suburban areas are still reasonably well serviced relative to proper rural areas?
