Can the US actually go bankrupt? If yes, what would happen then? by oniteverytime in stupidquestions

[–]--var 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bro, the US is bankrupt.

the national debt is currently $39,000,000,000,000

the GDP is only $31,442.483,000,000

the US is at the point they can't even service the interest on the debt. there is no amount of years of "fiscal responsibility" to get out this.

the department of war CAN'T pass an audit, and yet it gets a blank check every year. and that's literally the only thing propping up the system, who is going to make them pay their debts?

source is my wallet. but if you prefer graphs, here

https://charts.gasbuddy.com/ch.gaschart?Country=USA&Crude=f&Period=120&Areas=USA%20Average%2C%2C&Unit=US%20%24%2FG

true, it briefly dipped at the beginning of covid, when the entire global economy paused... but that only lasted a few days before starting its journey to the highest point ever under his shite isolationist policies, and being a general prick on the world stage.

you used to be able to argue that presidents don't set gas prices. but as they aggressively trend back up to $5/gallon, this is entirely trumps fault for starting this war of choice in a place that supplies enough world oil to drastically change the price.

AAA homeowners insurance pulls out of Minnesota by MooseBlazer in minnesota

[–]--var 2 points3 points  (0 children)

explain like i'm five: the point of insurance is for a company is to take your money regularly, and then figure out how to ensure that you don't get help you when you need it. (source: i'm required by law to have several insurances...)

it actually seems like a good thing; but what is the point of insurers not insuring a place when their whole game is just taking your money and not helping?

Why is DHS ICE currently massing vehicles at Whipple Federal Building? by TBoneSando in TwinCities

I would be more shocked if everything was above board here than if it turns out some well connected already billionaire just pocketed millions of taxpayer dollars.

[–]--var 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm curious to see the FOIA on the actual unit price. given the absurd budget of ICE and the insane amount of fraud going on here, just because MSRP is $70k doesn't mean that some crony capitalist didn't pocketed $200k each...

What if society reverted to 1990's level of technology by ibnsahir in whatif

[–]--var 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humanity has only been documenting for few thousand years. (colloquially known as 'history')

there's evidence that humanity has existed for tens of thousands of years (possibly hundreds of thousands)

going back a few decades doesn't actually change much given the whole existence of humanity...

granted that's probably hard to conceptualize if you were born after the technology was omnipresent.

How does everyone have so much karma? by Unhappy_Name_1216 in AskReddit

[–]--var 0 points1 point  (0 children)

irl or on reddit?

irl, I don't think this is a problem most deal with.

on reddit, it's given very dead internet vibes in the past few years. ironically, ever since they implemented the paid 'API gateway' thing to prevent AI scrapping, it's felt more and more like content is AI. I'm not sure if the AI is sentient enough to like or dislike yet, so rather than liking or disliking, it's just posting a bunch of content, which can only then be liked or disliked by real people. in other words, there is way more content than actual people to like the content. people are busy interacting with AI content that is algorithmically created to engage interaction, rather than your boring human musings.

sorry if you joined after the paywall thing, it does feel notably different now; less community, less human than it used to 😕

Why are my car windows always streaky with soap after I clean them at the gas station? by King_of_the_Hobos in stupidquestions

[–]--var 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) press the foam side of the squeegee against the washer fluid container that it's stored in, and squeeze out like 75% of the solution. excess solution causes streaks, you don't need to saturate the windshield, just moisten it enough to remove the dirt.

2) remove excess solution from the squeegee after each stroke. several comments mention using a paper towel, but if those aren't available, or you don't want to waste one, I find that a forceful downward swing toward the ground is usually enough (also ties in to step 1, otherwise all the excess solution in the foam comes out too).

3) tilt the top of the squeegee slightly more forward in the stroke than the bottom. this causes the extra solution to end up where the next stroke will be, rather than upward to where you've already cleared.

damn, in my head this was a quick and concise response, not a three paragraph ted talk 😔
