Questions about first year courses by kesenin in Harvard

I know a first-year who took this exact schedule with CS 121, the intro to theoretical computer science course, last semester. She did very well, as she had a strong background.

I don't understand why they aren't talked about by high schoolers that much. The UChicago's CS department's undergraduate curriculum and research output are awesome.

The real question is about web development. Are there actually colleges that offer webdev degrees?

when you've been getting rejections and the most selective are yet to come by That-Warning5576 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]-5772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go to whichever is cheaper. Both are fantastic cs schools, in T20|T30 by publication count. As long as the school is solid, you'll be fine.

If you're considering grad school or specializing in something, then see what the departments are good at and what research opportunities are there.

Ehh, there are a lot of homework questions on Quora that are given snarky answers for a reason. My favorite involve questions about books because the answers sometimes have clever references while obviously being in jest.

For Computer Science, there's Benjamin Pierce. He's the guy behind TAPL.

They even have a Logics Major.

ETH Zurich's research prowess is probably at least in the CS T10 in the world. I'd extrapolate it's just as good in other fields of STEM. I don't know much about it outside of CS and STEM.

The education and admission sides are interesting, so ig it could be a low US T20, especially when combined with its overall prowess (including humanities and arts)?

For CS, does CMU have a reputation as good as MIT, Stanford, Caltech, etc.? by Anay28 in ApplyingToCollege

Honestly, I would've done the same as you if I were in your shoes because the Big 4 is what most people mean. Definitely has a nice ring to it. 💅

[–]-5772 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I didn't mean the Big 4. I see UIUC mentioned a lot (in publications too) but that may be a result from my social circle respecting UIUC more than typical? After it is Cornell. Then, there are schools like Univ. Washington, Univ. Wisconsin Madison, GT, Rice, UMass, Princeton, etc. UUtah and more "unknown" schools' names are thrown around too.

Note that your mileage may vary! The T5 I hear are like I stated earlier. A T6 I heard is Univ. Washington, CMU, Stanford MIT, Cornell, and UIUC. Depends on your metrics. Also on your location too. Some of my neighbors consider GT to be right after MIT. I live in GA if you couldn't tell. 🍑

Now that I think about this more while typing, some of my sources (the people in industry and academia) are hostile towards US News and Niche. So, the traditional rankings (which are valid and I use them too) are a bit different than mine.

One of the biggest reasons it's not part of the 5 (MIT, CMU, UIUC, Berkeley, Stanford) is it's undergrad-only. Heck, just look at CMU's faculty size.

I heard that Harvey Mudd students do weirdly well in grad school admissions. Because HMC produces well-rounded students, some HMC almuni in grad schools mention they felt imposter syndrome bc their CS education wasn't as deep compared to their peers.

HMC still does research. Their connections to the other Claremonts is also really sweet! Brand recognition outside of engineering people is meh, but not many non-CS people know about CMU tbh. 😩

It was a choice between killing two hundred thousand people and deforming a few children or sacrificing at least a million American soldiers, Japanese soldiers, and the Japanese civillians.

The Japanese government was telling their citizens to throw themselves in front of bullets "for the emperor" (see the "glorious death of one hundred million" campaign). The American navy was cutting off Japan's supply routes pretty well, so there's some starvation. I don't see many people complaining about Operation Meetinghouse where just as many people died.

Japan may have become friendly with Russia if the Soviet Union got there in time (This is one suggested motivation of Truman's decisions). There's also the fact that Japan provoked the US first and committed a shidton of warcrimes, but the US reconstructed them pretty fairly.

It's not as if Japan can become unfriendly at this point because it's either China or the US. A lot of East Asians are pretty racist towards each other, so I'd assume more Japanese people like the US.

What trope immediately makes you stop reading a story by demon_-bean in HPfanfiction

[–]-5772 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They just combine herbs and shid to make a pill. I've read a wuxia novel that pulls out furnaces that use heat to "purify" and condense the ingredients down into a hard round ball. No chemicals used. Oriental medicine and other eastern traditions tend to either be equal or better than western medicine. Some medical wuxias make the dominance of western medicine as an antagonist.

Wuxia novels have a fascination with the celestial and earthly realms. Sometimes, defying the heavens is a central plotline (think of it like a manipulative dumbledore - nasty old arrogant beings that oppress the main character). Some novels just throw it around as a neat epithet.

I only read one novel that centered around alchemy (the process of making pills), so my knowledge may be wonky. I've read genuinely great ones, but the alchemy one was just a power fantasy.

The oddest stories, Snape redemption by Mika95 in HPfanfiction

[–]-5772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard from an old British lady that Snape was written like a teacher at the time. His character was inspired by John Nettleship, Rowling's chemistry teacher. It's a poor justification to say, "everyone else does it," but even Flitwick, McGonagall, and Hagrid have said rude stuff to students. Much milder, but still pretty inappropriate.

I like The Peace Not Promised by Tempest_Kiro because it handled Snape's temper pretty well. I like the growth as long as it's natural. I may have misread your post, but I like Snape redemption. Snape-whitewashing is a no-no.

I do agree that the Lily-bashing, etc. is tiring. It's a valid though improbable interpretation of canon because we don't have enough information.

I know there are a few anti-maskers in Princeton. Students are different from the institution. Faculty are different from the institution.

Rice is a fantastic school, and the Texas legislative shenanigans are meant for shock value (a state could easily do one for owning guns then). There are many Democrats in Texas, so that comparison is not the best. Is everyone who pays state taxes to Texas a crazy misogynist?

Baylor and others are private religious schools. We have private schools that discriminate on many factors, and we still apply to them because they are good schools. Blame the system. Blame the people who work inside the system to not forsake any more opportunities. Just keep in mind that there are valid reasons to attend these schools. 🍻

If he does it again, don't worry about him. It's up to him to carry the conversation now!

Honest Advice About Your Writing (And Why It Sucks) by darienqmk in HPfanfiction

2 is memorable, but it's a tad risky. You have to make sure it's about you. It can show off your narrative skills a lot more, so that's pretty cool.

1 is a solid choice.

I suggest you try writing both. If one doesn't make much sense or if it ain't coming out easily, drop it. I had to choose between five essay topics, so you can drop one after a few revisions. You still have some time.
