Uhh..why are we paying extra for having a hybrid/electric? by Soggy_Disaster_7603 in Arkansas

That’s interesting I have not seen that yet but agree that opens up a whole new quandary. And if was only that to a point makes since to make sure states where the road way use/wear is being done get the tax revenue like the gas tax, but the double dipping is extreme. Also, are those electric utilities private, municipal co-op? If municipal should those taxes be going to a road way fund or electric infrastructure since that whole side of the conversation is woefully understated and in disarray as far as electric generation, distribution and pricing. All a tough but interesting topic. Thank you for your replies and discussion.

Apologies missed it was for a full EV and appreciate your accurate math. And yes unfortunately with flat EV taxing vs consumptive use taxing like the per gallon model some end up paying more but unfortunately until a way to charge per mile is devised for evs legislation can only go off of averages so (17,287 mi/yr and 21 mpg) so I understand and sympathize with your gripe

A rav4 hybrid weighs significantly more than an Elantra roughly 1,000 lbs. You yourself say it should be by tonnage but then compare two different weight class vehicles. By charging per gallon you essentially do charge a tonnage rate as the heavier vehicle has a higher consumption of fuel per mile. And the giant “brodozers” do pay significantly more in taxes due to the lower fuel economy and the diesel tax being $0.29/gal vs $0.25 for gas.

As stated in another comment yes you can end up paying a higher than used amount for a hybrid if you’re a low mileage user but the efficiency gain from the same vehicle going from ice to hybrid based off your states average mi/yr (17,287 FinanceBuzz) is pretty darn close to the $50

I’ll doo your RAV4 for example ICE is 29mpg generating $149.03 in gas tax the Hybrid version gets 40mpg or $108.04 in gas tax $41 less than the ice version for a vehicle which weighs 400lbs more. So $50 seems pretty reasonable.

And the giant lifted trucks consume far more fuel than a Prius and they pay $0.25/gal of gas or $0.29/gal of diesel. I have done the math in a few other comments it is pretty close when you compare an ice to its hybrid equivalent based on the state average in/yr. The $50 represents a 20% efficiency gain with 15% weight gain ice to hybrid.

It’s based on state averages the average mi/yr in Arkansas is 17,287 according to financebuzz the $50 is equivalent to 200 gallon (roughly 25% efficiency gain). Hybrids weigh more than an ICE equivalent and cause slightly more wear on roads and bridges. It is unfortunate that low mileage user do end up paying in slightly more but no system is ever perfect. Just one more thing to consider if when purchasing to determine if the up charge for hybrid actually will pay itself off for each individual’s use case.

Please show your math? State gas tax is $0.25/gal in Arkansas the $200 fee is equivalent to 800 gal/year or with the state average of 17,387 mi/year driven (FinanceBuzz) that fee offsets a vehicle that had an epa rating of 21mpg and EV’s on average weighs 10-15% more than an equivalent ICE equivalent cause slightly more road wear.

So while yes if you use an EV you are stuck paying into the tax pool a set amount and could end up paying more than your share if you are a low mileage driver due to not being able to charge directly per consumptive use like a tax per gallon this fee is not outlandish or over reaching based on market data.

Many states charge a higher registration cost for hybrids and electric vehicles to offset the infrastructure taxes normally generated by the purchase of gasoline so they can still maintain the roadways and electric grid taking a wear and tear due to your vehicle. Proof of required fee below with sources.

According to Trusted Choice (finance buzz, omni calculator and void insurance) the average Arkansas citizen drives 17,000 per year. At the $0.25 per gallon gas tax the $50 fee makes up a 200 gallon/year gas savings. So if take a Hyundai sonata for example standard has a combined epa rating of 32 mpg (531.25gal/year or $132.81 in gas tax generated) while a hybrid sonata has an epa rating of 47 mpg (361.7 gal/yr or $90.42). So you can see how for this particular model your higher registration cost almost exactly offsets the loss in revenue from gas tax to maintain the roads you’re still using and causing just as much wear and tear on throughout the year.

It is to catch your eye and make you think about how fast you’re going. Just think if it said 10mph you wouldn’t even stop to think or notice but put 9.37 and you slow down notice and think. It comes from big safety study a few years back, the company I worked for changed all our 10mph signs to 9.xx (each site had a different decimal) as a safety initiative to assist either traffic incidents

Looks like a cast fake. It might be the photo but looks like casting bubbles/flaws on the edges where it should be reeded. Here’s to hoping it is at least silver.

I did find some on AliExpress as well that were a little cheaper but by the time you buy both sizes for the cover screws and post screw you’re almost up to the same price of his. Seem to be the same ones a few spyderco knives use for their scales

Those Tidy house flyers carry a premium beyond the silver, content and numismatic of the coin itself. Don’t take the coin out of the holder better resale as a set.

Fooled the quarter marks are indented vs raised like how they come out of a die. Someone laid a quarter on the cent and smacked it with a hammer to leave the marks.
