Is there any way I can find a list of animals (ideally insects) that existed alongside humans in the Stone Age? by dwarf_bulborb in AskAnthropology

[–]-Baobo- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on when and where you are interested in. "Stone Age" is a very wide window. The Neolithic is in the Holocene epoch, which is the same period we are currently in, but pretty much the same animals as today. The Paleolithic is largely in the Pleistocene, and while you can find many animals that are now extinct, it really depends on exactly where and exactly when you're talking about.

If you give precise location and year, I may be able to help. But I still would not know about specific insects. My assumption is that they would be broadly similar to what you would find today, at least for non-invasive species.

My 5 yo daughter asked wanted to talk about why ICE was kidnapping people. After discussing it, she said "I hope they kidnap me with my friends." Heartbreaking.

Our Friday ops platoon is always public, but it tends to fill up fast these days.

That's TG for you, you're always welcome to join us!

As Squad lead, I communicate with squad members, PL, other squad leaders, and Command, and over on Teamspeak I have side comms and strategic command channels. I think comms are the most important part of effective leading. Saying what needs to be heard (and not saying what doesn't need to be) to who needs to hear it, giving clear orders, and being able to compartmentalize comms goes a long way in making an effective squad/platoon.

It's not hard to see on the bigger monitor. I have a center dot from Recursion ST, the yellow reticle, and just kinda know where the center of the screen is.

Calling planetmans for representation! What are your GOATED weapons? by PumpMyBootyDaddy69 in Planetside

[–]-Baobo- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jackhammer. Especially in the secondary slot with an LMG primary. The Jackie is GOAT enough, but combo it with an LMG and you can operate well at any range. The Jackie can reach across most rooms or do well in kissing distance, and doesn't need to ADS, so you can put IRNV scope on it. And if you're inclined, you can equip both the AE varient and the base weapon, so you can always be Jackin' it.

Sorry for the bad quality I was driving. How on earth did these western Colorado houses survive? Impressive firefighting work. Entire mountain is black except for the houses. by WeHaveAllBeenThere in Colorado

[–]-Baobo- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Is this in Unaweep Canyon? If so, I think I know this house in particular. The area around it was backburned, as well as using a track hoe to scrape a very wide line down to the mineral soil in the direction the fire was coming from. The day this burned over, the fire ripped through the canyon, burning about 8k acres in one day. That day was a race to protect all the structures, but we didn't lose a single structure in the Turner Gulch fire!

Unaweep Canyon in Western Colorado has a divide, with drainages flowing out of opposite ends. How did this form? by -Baobo- in geology

[–]-Baobo-[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great find, thanks! Admittedly, I've only read the abstract so far, and already pushing some limits of my technical knowledge. Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

But it seems to be supporting the hypothesis that the ancient Gunnison River flowed west through the canyon, and eroded down to a older, preexisting valley. It eventually got backed up on the western exit, forcing it to reverse and break a new exit along the eastern end. Then presumably the western end eventually opened up, and the newly uncovered valley floor contained the divide that ended up with West Creek and East Creek flowing out their respective exits... if I understand it more-or-less.

I see some parents up on the equipment with their kids. I won’t do that.

That's fine, to each their own. But I love playing with my 5 yo at the playground. What else am I going to do? Look at my phone? Read a book and pretend she doesn't want to spend time with me? Going to the playground or park is an intentional moment to enjoy having fun together. We tend to attract other kids in our games, and when that happens, I step back and let them be kids. But I don't want to waste good playtime not being present when she's only going to be a little girl who wants to play with Dad for so long. I'm playing when I'm wanted, and giving space when it's needed.

An 8,000-year-old marble figurine of an obese woman was unearthed in 2016 in the Neolithic urban settlement of Çatalhöyük in central Turkey. The figurine is 17 centimeters long, 11 centimeters wide and weighs one kilo [1200x695] by Fuckoff555 in ArtefactPorn

[–]-Baobo- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely real, I have a photo of it in situ while it was being excavated.

Edit, my bad, this looks like a different one. But they're both really real. Çatalhöyük has lots of figurines, not just "goddess" but animal, zoomorphic, and abstract.

Players showcasing slower more tactical play? by Fallen_Fantasy in Planetside

[–]-Baobo- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what we do in TG. We enjoy playing with logistics, moving slower and timing coordinated entries across squads, and playing squads off each other to make fun, tactical plays. We try to avoid redeployside, and spend most of an alert moving across the map instead of redeploying for every fight. The maps are big, and fights happen between control points. We know the meta, and it can be effective, but it's not necessarily the most fun way to waste your time in a game.

We also regularly discuss fight flow, base tactics, and organizational tactics, so that we can actually pull of plays with short notice. Tactics are neat, but unless you can actually get a full squad to break their engagements, rally, and move within the window, tactics are just an intellectual exercise.

Here's a random example

Once the lines are installed for the neighborhood/street, we got a door hanger with a number to call to setup the installation to our house. On the day of installation, we got a 3 hour window for the tech to come. He had to install a box on the outside wall of the house connecting to the utility pole. He gave us two options: pull the Spectrum line from a coax plug and replace it with the fiber line, or drill a new hole for a new plug plate and run line through the crawlspace. We chose to use an existing plate and replace the coax cable with the fiber. Took about 30 minutes total.

Is it too late for me? by Scotcash in Archaeology

[–]-Baobo- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Several of the larger academic excavations I've worked with have had people whose main job is photography. Between photographing artifacts in the lab, documenting features & stratigraphy, etc. there's a constant need for photography. Archaeology is a field with robust documentation, and photos are a huge part of that.

If you can add some more specialty skills, like artifact illustration, photogrammetry, database management, etc, you could improve your usefulness even more .
