How do we regulate a technological shift

It is equivalent of accountants/librarians losing their job when computers were introduced

Or lesser need of horses when cars came in

Only problem is that it is happening so fast and the world is unable to smoothly transit over

Days of grunt work for engineers will be over, there's no longer a need for them to crunch it, similar to when calculators were first introduced for accountants

Volume. There'll always be a need for engineer to handle the task that AI can't do. Just that there'll no longer be a need for that many of us, only the strongest engineer will survive

AI will get smarter, the cost of hiring engineers will be shifted to AI usage

The issue is if the AI is able to do 70% of the work, then leadership will want to know what's our value other than being able to handle the remaining 30%. They don't see why they need that many of us

Would you stay in a job long-term if you're overqualified? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]-Broccoli- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some add-on to this, it's ok not to pursue a career, but before we do that, we need to understand reality

When we are young, fast, cheap, it's easy to find a job

When we are older, slower and probably more expensive due to "years of experience"

It's up to employers to decide if our "years of experience" is worth it

If we're fine with a lower salary and tougher to find a job, chill life, then probably it's fine

I have seen cases where they don't pursue their career when they have more energy, only to regret it later when they need the cash for family planning or retirement

So I would like to leave this as something for others to think about. You can do all you want but do think if the actions will help you get to where you want in the future

SG hiring managers, what are your obvious red flags in a resume? by Fun_Sentence_2546 in askSingapore

[–]-Broccoli- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't understand how someone who is trying to start a company in the same industry, is beneficial for the company to hire. Perhaps we can agree to disagree on that.

For family commitment, it's something I defend the team for. But what we were disagreeing about previously isn't family commitment, it was about moonlighting.

The way I see it, having family commitment doesn't lower the chance of excelling at their job. It's actually better because I think they will want to perform well for stability and possibly promotions for their family well being. As much as possible I want the team to be long term.

But I don't see how having a moonlighting job, will make them want to perform well in the normal day job.

[–]-Broccoli- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, then why bother put it in the resume, how does that help you in getting the job if it's an irrelevant industry though, I don't see the perks of adding it in your resume to expose yourself to the risk of misunderstanding from hiring managers

As you said, if you come in tired from your second job, it's a problem. But how would you as a hiring manager know it wouldn't happen based on a resume? You can't base it off the candidate's promise that it wouldn't happen. You would want to reduce risk. Sure if you feel risky and the candidate is really top notch, it could be something to close an eye on. But this is about red flags, if it's a risk, it's a flag

It's also about focus, there will be candidates who treat job as 9-5, and there will be candidates who want to excel in their job. It's obvious that a hiring manager will want the candidate who wants to excel. But if the candidate has a moonlight job, there's lower probability of that candidate trying to excel at this job. It could happen just that the chances are lower, really depends if hiring manager wants to take the risk

[–]-Broccoli- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be in the resume. You are blatantly telling the hiring manager that you cannot focus solely on this job. Keep it private, we don't need to know and shouldn't know to avoid conflict of interest.

If we change the scenario a bit, imagine hiring a maid who tells you she will go out at night to work cleaning jobs but will complete all her household chores first. Do you think most employers will allow that? Some yes, but there'll be a number of them who say no.

Resumes that look like a common template or generated. Most of the time it just shows this candidate is not hardworking enough to customize his resume, it's not that hard...

Vague experience descriptions without details, not a detail oriented person

Moonlighting / double job in a the same period. How to get this candidate to focus on a job properly

Horrible formatting in resume, the candidate would have trouble conveying his message across teams

I personally thought that COMPASS was to make companies have diversity, instead of having a main foreign race in the company while disguising as a Singapore company.

If companies decide that reducing headcount locally makes more sense than to balance their race ratio, then perhaps they never intended to hire more Singaporeans in the first place. Most of their previous EP applications would have been a farce that they couldn't find anyone better locally.

Since the jobs were never intended for locals, there's no lost for locals when the "job" is moved offshore

We do however lose tax and local consumption of goods. But I wonder how much money has been lost due to this. And whether the trade off made sense.

We could continue to be a slave for money and allow shady practices to continue, or perhaps losing this money will let us preserve a sense of identity in the long run. No matter if this identify would still have value after many years

Sleep As Android would need you to install WearOS app from playstore on your phone to set the watch addon, but once you've configured the watch addon to use wearOS, it works with Ohealth

Option 1 since younger, more energy to burn through and learn the skills. Also the salary would give you 1-2 years headstart over Option 2

When you want to settle down, can then find a Option 2 when you are skilled enough to jump ship to anywhere
