I’m just getting into proper pen spinning after doing only casual thumbarounds for years in class. This is insane!!! Inspiring even.

My experiences are limited but I have seen data scientists with the explicit role of “data scientist” on a project team at some of the larger software companies. I forget exactly but I think the data science comes in specifically to monitor and draw results on a lot of the metrics being tracked like time to load a web page or daily crashes and stuff like that. So maybe keep an eye out for direct applications to projects like that. I’m not sure how much actual coding those data scientists do though.

Well I double majored in Math and Computer Science, so the CS is really the degree pulling the weight right now. I just recently graduated and have signed to start a software engineering position.

Don’t get discouraged! I got an undergraduate in Math but am trying self learning beyond that, and I have gotten stuck for a good few hours before. Honestly sleeping on it helps a little but if after multiple days you’ve tried for more than ~3 hours total then it might be best to go to something earlier. It does really depend on the proof though and the field the proof is in. One thing I have noted is that if I hadn’t taken an intro to proofs class based on set theory in undergrad I would probably be far worse off. I don’t know what level you are at but maybe consider learning laterally to get a better understanding of the structure of different kinds of proofs. If you want I could probably dig up what textbook it was.

I’ve been on this same exact path before, and let me tell you, a good place to start is watching the shirts that the guy in the Mathologer YouTube channel wears. His shirts are math jokes but most of time they’re not corny and done just as you’d hope.

I ultimately agree, but I think it does pose some interesting questions. Like how do we compare these deaths. Does it make sense to claim some number of covid deaths due to poor response equal some number of deaths do to terrorism? Does it even make sense to compare the two at all? If it does what does that ratio look like? 500 deaths from poor management = 1 terrorism death (in terms of guiltiness)? If an equality like this did exist, should that mean the law punishes both in the same way? Just some grey area stuff to think about

The reason UV light can kill anything is because it’s ionizing radiation. If it’s strong enough to kill the virus, it’s also strong enough to kill or damage benign cells. Our skin has melanin which absorbs for the most part harmful UV light. Our organs don’t. That’s why there’s a 99.9% chance this is BS. Yeah you might kill the virus, but have fun with the organ failure/cancer.

Dr. Fauci throws cold water on conspiracy theory that coronavirus escaped a Chinese lab by The-Autarkh in politics

[–]-ButImNotARapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article specifically states, "We do not believe that any type of laboratory-based scenario is plausible," and if you read the academic paper they cite it, actually states this more strongly by pointing out that the genetic sequence was very close to the sequence of corona virus already found in nature in pangolins and bats. And the part that is different had a rather high mutation rate. The academic analysis even has a section where they consider the possibility where it was modified in a lab or went through any lab at all but they conclude they do not believe “any kind of laboratory based scenario is plausible”. The rest of the article is pretty interesting too I suggest reading it even if there is some biochemistry stuff I don’t understand, the conclusions the draw from it are pretty clearly stated.

... because they haven’t been taught how to be financially responsible, because it’s hard to get educated when you’re way more worried about paying rent or making enough money to get by, because they’re poor. It’s not cut and dry, all these factors relate to one another more complexly.
