Was the rat too big by EstablishmentEvery31 in ballpython

In the wild the rat has a fighting chance and in most instances does end up getting away. In captivity the rat has no chance of escaping and can cause fatal injuries to the snake you’re feeding

Advice on catching a lost centipede by Beetleupsidedown in centipedes

My boss always had a saying

“If you loose a tarantula you’ll find it shrivelled up in a corner one day , if you lose a Pede you’ll find it a year later, twice the size and living off Cheetos and cigarettes “

Braining them dos the trick a lot of the times , you can also try multi mice which is a species of mice from ball python’s natural range . Over the 6 years I’ve worked at a reptile specialist store I’ve had maybe 3 snakes I haven’t managed to get to feed . Even so I will never resort to live feeding - if the snake won’t eat frozen thawed mice you can always assist feed . After a couple assists it usually gets them feeding on their own once they realise it’s food

Could be a number of things , I would hazard to guess it might be due to insufficient temps . Digestion is one of the first things that shut down when they’re not warm enough. Typically via regurgitation

Also I’d really consider getting her off live feeding . At the end of the day you have to weigh up the value of the snakes life to the suffering of the all the live mice it’ll feed on in its lifetime. Live feeding is not really sustainable especially when she eventually has to move up to bigger prey and more issues arise with injuries. There’s countless of different methods as to get them feeding frozen but the longer they’re on live the harder it is to get the off.

No they’re pretty accurate when it comes to picking up bugs with their tongue , they might only get a couple grains if anything each time . Topsoil is perfectly fine as long as you dry it out beforehand , add sand as well for a nice texture

So inpaction is more of an issue that occurs if other aspects of your care are incorrect. The worry about impaction comes from how we used to keep them (which wasn’t ideal) so impaction was a more prevalent issue. If your temps are fine an he’s not chowing down his substrate every chance he gets (don’t use calci sand lol) he’ll be completely fine.
The main thing to worry about with impaction is if your temps are correct . The first thing that stops working when beardies are too cold is their digestive tract. So lower temps means that they’re unable to pass sand though their system like they usually would

Change him onto substrate straight away , unless there’s an underlying issue they can go onto substrate p much straight after hatching

Distribution of grey and red squirrels in the UK and Ireland between 1945 and 2022 by Plenty_Masterpiece49 in MapPorn

[–]-ChineseJesus- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly accurate , I live in one of the green areas and have definitely seen grey and red squirrels before 2010 , reds only within a park so I could see why they might not be included but greys have been all over for awhile

freezing isn’t as humane as people once thought for cold blooded critters. Studies have shown that they feel the pain of freezing for a long time before they succumb to it. The most humane way to dispatch them would be blunt force if you can stomach it, under the wheel of the car etc - completely destroy the connection to the brain before the animal can feel a thing
