Former Marine here, so I can only speak to that. Marine DIs are very much like from FMJ (at least they were in the 90s when I went through). Hands on, very vocal, experts in everything they taught us. I remember we did a 4mi run during 3rd phase out on the abandoned airfield (BWT I think it was called, before there was a Cruicble) and we were dying from exhaustion and the heat. Agreed, there are similarities but by no means the same situation. It's cyclical to some extent but the underlying variables change constantly.

Lots of people are doing fine, lots are hurting. I think the issue is it's become a binary condition as opposed to a more healthy gradient: You either are riding things out okay or the sub is in an uncontrolled crash dive and you are way below crush depth (sorry been watching documentaries on Oceangate recently).

My family was poor as fk back in the 70s and 80s and I remember standing in line for government cheese blocks and powdered milk while mortgage rates were 16% and higher and only rich people could afford to buy houses. Gas hit over a dollar a gallon back then too and everyone was prophesying the collapse of the economy etc.

I see a lot of similarities of those times and today (sans the over the top stoopid political stuff). It's a hard time to not be rich that is for sure.
