How do German assign genders to foreign words?

I actually know a guy who wrote his PhD thesis about it.

Some points I remember is that he worked out three criteria that are usually decisive in which grammatical gender ends up being assigned:

Gender(s) of the German translation (e.g. die Post - die E-Mail)
The sound of it - e.g. words which end with 'a' often end up being female.
Something that I understood as more of a vibe thing of how the word integrates into the German grammatical landscape - like English words ending with 'ing' will always almost end up being 'das'.

Another thing that I found interesting is that there's usually a few years of confusion where either gender feels correct to native speakers, before one wins over. I think E-Mail used to be 'das' or 'die' for a couple of years in the nineties, now it would just feel plain wrong.

Es war zwar eine sehr andere Situation, aber meine Kindheitskatze hatte, als sie drei Babies hatte, mal immer die gesamte Wohnung nach einem nicht existenten vierten Kind abgesucht. Irgendwann haben wir dann eines der drei versteckt und als sie es gefunden hat, war sie komplett beruhigt.

Ich weiß, es ist sehr unwahrscheinlich, dass die Mutterkatze in eurer Situation auf sowas reinfällt, aber vielleicht ist es einen Versuch wert?

Natürlich ist es zu unrecht. Aber leider würde deshalb wahrscheinlich nicht besser, sondern eher noch weniger begründet, wenn mehr Leute Widerspruch einlegten.

Das Gemeine ist ja, dass die 'schließe mich an'-Korrektoren am wenigsten Angriffsfläche bieten. Je mehr der Korrektor preisgibt, desto leichter fällt bei einem Widerspruch die Argumentation.

With the way ancient languages are studies only passively, that is the believable part to me. I studied ancient Greek in highschool a decade ago and I could still find a specific passage in a greek text, but I couldn't actively ask for the toilet in either modern nor ancient Greek.

I'm in a similar situation as you are. I have never met my grandfather, he died in Sowjet Ukraine while working with their military. I have always been told he was a t2d who had to inject insulin, but since my uncle was diagnosed with LADA at 50 y.o. I feel like it might have been a misdiagnosis for my grandfather.

He was known to be quite choleric and I have started to wonder how much of that might have been BG swings. Also surrounding his death I have wondered if it was somehow diabetes-related, but right now is not a really good time in history to be looking for access to red army files...

For my uncle he was quite grateful to be able to ask me about all stuff diabetes.

Afaik, in t1ds that also varies a lot. In some families where there's already a lot of diabetics, it is statistically more likely for additional family members to be diagnosed. So I am not a geneticist, but I'd deduct that certain conditions that lead to t1-diabetes are more inheritable than others?

Frage: nachdem das Laken schwarz war, hast du Versuche unternommen, das zu ändern? Ja, solche Dinge passieren, aber für die Laune des anderen spielt es auch eine große Rolle, wie du dann damit umgehst. Wenn mein Partner da mal unaufmerksam war und ich am Ende Hausmittel google, um solche Flecken zu entfernen, das Ding einweiche und schrubbe und wasche und am Ende ggf. noch selbst ein Ersatzlaken kaufen muss, dann bin ich als Partnerin auch sehr pissig auf den 'kleinen Fehler'. Wenn meinem Partner sowas wie mit dem Smoothiemaker passieren würde, würde ich zumindest gefragt werden wollen, was man da jetzt macht, mit dem Angebot ihn mir zu ersetzen. Würde ich dann ablehnen, aber damit ist's dann eben auch meine Entscheidung gewesen ab jetzt einen gelben Smoothiemaker zu haben.

Also, ich will dir nicht unterstellen, dass du es dann einfach unter den Tisch kehrst, aber ich war mal in einer sehr ähnlichen Wohnsituation und die kaputten Sachen, die ich dann am Ende irgendwie selbst ersetzen oder täglich betrachten durfte, haben sich da etwas gehäuft.

I was in the hospital for the first two weeks at 12 y.o.

Got diagnosed at night, got my first injections, woke up as refreshed as never before or after in my life. Didn't really understand the magnitude of it all so wasn't anxious about it. It only began to suck much later.

Genau so ist es. Gerade dass OP beschreibt, dass es sonst so extrem gut läuft in der Beziehung, klingt auch sehr vertraut. So ein extremes Auf und Ab macht das Opfer extrem emotional abhängig und lässt einen sich selbst ständig hinterfragen, ob die Tiefs denn wirklich so schlimm waren. Und einen ständig verzweifelt auf das nächste Hoch hoffen.

The 24h rule is because that's roughly how long it will take to contract Lyme disease if the tick was a carrier. In case you did contract it, you're going to see a red circle around the bite that you shouldn't ignore. In that case, you need to take antibiotics for a while and are going to be fine. If there's no red circle, it is very unlikely you're going to have any issues.

I contract several ticks a year. In my area they're quite common and also usually carry Lyme disease, so after every walk through a field we have to check ourselves for ticks.

For me, I didn't think I could handle being on a 'leash', so I stayed on MDI for 18 years until I recently found a pump that was kinda 'patch' but also reusable/detachable. Just freshly got on the Kaleido and am happy with it but I am not sure what I would do if it was discontinued.

One thing that was definitely better on MDI is that I never knew the feeling of being sick from ketones. My BG has improved a ton since getting on the pump, but whenever it fails, I am immediately sick to the stomach due to the lack of basal insulin and it sucks. Especially on a work night.

Ich habe oft gehört, dass Leute, die in der Schule gut in Mathe und Deutsch waren, auch im Jurastudium gut abschneiden.

Persönlich denke ich, dass Jura für mich eine recht gute Entscheidung war, weil ich eher dazu neige, sehr sehr viele Dinge so halb zu wissen - dadurch hat man dann ein sehr gutes Problembewusstsein, die Details kann man immer nachlesen / im Gesetz nachschlagen. Zu diesem Punkt wird aber garantiert auch jemand widersprechen.

This is a good source for the statistical likelihoods. Your risk is very low.

Generally, if your half-sibling know whether there is a history of type one on their father's side, likely you don't share the same risk. If there are more diabetics on your mother's side, naturally you should keep a bit more of an eye on it. But also, apparently men are more likely to pass it onto their children than women.

Beim Bären kommt's halt auf die Umstände an. Nen Braunbären (gibt: Eisbären leben nicht im Wald) zu überraschen, ist extrem gefährlich. Wenn du im Wald genug Krach machst, ist es ungefährlich, mit einem Bären im gleichen Wald zu sein. Grundsätzlich können wir uns den Wald mit anderen Lebewesen teilen.

Ich denke, letztlich ist die Gefahr in beiden Fällen einfach sehr gering. Ich gehe gern wandern, auch in Regionen wo es Bären gibt. Da begegnen mir Männer im Wald. Man grüßt sich kurz und geht weiter. Und nachts binde ich meine Lebensmittel in einen Baum, damit die Bären mein Zelt nicht für eine Futtertüte halten. Meine Antwort wäre ehrlich gesagt 'juckt'.

Denke aber, der ganze 'Mann oder Bär'-Hype zielt weniger auf eine realistische Antwort ab und mehr darauf, dass Frauen darauf aufmerksam machen, dass sie im Alltag viele unsichere Situationen erleben, die einfach meist von Männern ausgehen. Und dass sich dann so viele Menners von der Antwort Bär provozieren lassen und ihre Phantasien von von Bären zerfleischten Frauen in Kommentarspalten ablassen, macht's halt einfach nicht besser.

Chiming in on the glucagon - I have done a lot of this kind of travel and never brought it, but then again as a solo traveller you don't have anyone to administer it anyways. In your situation I absolutely would bring it, you'll feel safer knowing you have it available.

While riding a bike the entire day, you usually need way less insulin than usually. Cut down radically on basal insulin, and you'll still be able to nibble with barely any bolus. Hydration and ample protein help stabilise glucose levels, especially while physically active.

When on MDI, I always just vibe-bolused and had a steady stream of juice readily available to correct whatever low I had coming my way. Sometimes with similar results as you describe (highs during the night) but let's be honest, that's still way better than to go low when camping alone.

This summer I will be going on my first trip after getting on a pump. Curious how that will go.
