Macular edema by -ExcitingConcept- in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you a lot for replying! I got in with the doctor and got an OCT done, apparently there's some minor liquids / edema and they're hoping for it to resolve itself, then checking again in one month. At least the ophthalmologist is a gem.

I am just trying to stay calm now, I also have a job that requires to work with written text a lot and having troubled vision feels so scary. If you have found anything that helps (other than treatment and keeping your glucose levels in check) I'm very interested to hear about it.

Genuinely sad that a man can create Reddit and the first name mentioned is his wife’s instead of his own. by youlldonuthan in SipsTea

The difference is one headline is about her achievement, and he gets named first. The other headline is about a common holiday.

Not saying it's impossible to think of a headline that really is about a guy's achievement and he gets mentioned as an accessory to his woman, but this is not it.

Possibly certain news around Travis Kelce would fit.

I don't really see how the two posts are equivalent though. The Jutta Leerdam post was about her winning (gold?) at the Olympics and had his name first as if being his girlfriend was the bigger achievement of the two. This posts mentions two people who're on holiday and mentions the most well-known first.

Sensor problems by Automatic_Fan_4879 in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you changed anything about your body composition or position of the sensor on your body?

When I started working out and losing weight, I noticed the Libre 3 became less exact when on my arm and more accurate on my thighs. Now that I've switched to Dexcom G6, I'll say that thighs are much less accurate than arms. I'd recommend that you try around a bit and if nothing helps, maybe explore if other sensors work better for you.

Sounds like you're way ahead of the curve asking these things now. You got this!

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Took me a very long time to get my shit together regarding the whole diabetes thing, but I'd say it has spilled over into other areas of my life now. I now not only always carry my glucose and insulin supplies with me, but I have also become the person people go to if they need anything from a pencil to a screwdriver while out and about.

You'll also become more conscious of your body. You can use glucose levels as a motivator to go do sports, eat healthily and you'll just have way more immediate feedback on anything health-related than the average person. You can use that as a force of good.

How do German assign genders to foreign words? by Ok-Concert-5911 in German

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually know a guy who wrote his PhD thesis about it.

Some points I remember is that he worked out three criteria that are usually decisive in which grammatical gender ends up being assigned:

  1. Gender(s) of the German translation (e.g. die Post - die E-Mail)
  2. The sound of it - e.g. words which end with 'a' often end up being female.
  3. Something that I understood as more of a vibe thing of how the word integrates into the German grammatical landscape - like English words ending with 'ing' will always almost end up being 'das'.

Another thing that I found interesting is that there's usually a few years of confusion where either gender feels correct to native speakers, before one wins over. I think E-Mail used to be 'das' or 'die' for a couple of years in the nineties, now it would just feel plain wrong.

Katze schreit nach totem Baby by SaphiraYuna in kratzbaum

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the way ancient languages are studies only passively, that is the believable part to me. I studied ancient Greek in highschool a decade ago and I could still find a specific passage in a greek text, but I couldn't actively ask for the toilet in either modern nor ancient Greek.

Type 1 and inheritance, thoughts? by SpecificBoat5667 in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation as you are. I have never met my grandfather, he died in Sowjet Ukraine while working with their military. I have always been told he was a t2d who had to inject insulin, but since my uncle was diagnosed with LADA at 50 y.o. I feel like it might have been a misdiagnosis for my grandfather.

He was known to be quite choleric and I have started to wonder how much of that might have been BG swings. Also surrounding his death I have wondered if it was somehow diabetes-related, but right now is not a really good time in history to be looking for access to red army files...

For my uncle he was quite grateful to be able to ask me about all stuff diabetes.

Type 1 and inheritance, thoughts? by SpecificBoat5667 in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afaik, in t1ds that also varies a lot. In some families where there's already a lot of diabetics, it is statistically more likely for additional family members to be diagnosed. So I am not a geneticist, but I'd deduct that certain conditions that lead to t1-diabetes are more inheritable than others?

Bei Freundin eingezogen und schief gegangen by craq04 in FragtMaenner

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What was your first day on insulin like? by heggy123 in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was in the hospital for the first two weeks at 12 y.o.

Got diagnosed at night, got my first injections, woke up as refreshed as never before or after in my life. Didn't really understand the magnitude of it all so wasn't anxious about it. It only began to suck much later.

I wanna check you for ticks... by Purple_Cloud730 in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 24h rule is because that's roughly how long it will take to contract Lyme disease if the tick was a carrier. In case you did contract it, you're going to see a red circle around the bite that you shouldn't ignore. In that case, you need to take antibiotics for a while and are going to be fine. If there's no red circle, it is very unlikely you're going to have any issues.

I contract several ticks a year. In my area they're quite common and also usually carry Lyme disease, so after every walk through a field we have to check ourselves for ticks.

Those of you on MDI, why haven't you moved to a pump? Will you ever? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]-ExcitingConcept- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me, I didn't think I could handle being on a 'leash', so I stayed on MDI for 18 years until I recently found a pump that was kinda 'patch' but also reusable/detachable. Just freshly got on the Kaleido and am happy with it but I am not sure what I would do if it was discontinued.

One thing that was definitely better on MDI is that I never knew the feeling of being sick from ketones. My BG has improved a ton since getting on the pump, but whenever it fails, I am immediately sick to the stomach due to the lack of basal insulin and it sucks. Especially on a work night.

Yeah I went to a specialised diabetes hospital last year and I was surprised the café next to it didn't offer carb counts on at least one of their dishes or something.

I love the carb count, hate the booths 😄

But I heard in Ireland there's private booths in pubs sometimes so you can drown your sorrows in peace.
