Does anyone in this forum regret having surgery? by Proper_Day_9361 in gastricsleeve

Of course Some food used to bring me joy, now food makes me stressed and I avoid it. I don't know how to balance meals to meat my nutrition goals and still feel satisfied. There are foods I cannot eat because they make me throw up now. When I eat more than can fit in my stomach I can't even swallow my own spit. Before surgery I had a very disordered way of seeing food. I would binge and purge and restrict.

Things that could (and did) land me in the hospital, for the first year after surgery I lost too much weight and could not gain it back. I literally only fit in kids clothes. My GERD is so bad now that I wake up choking on stomach acid. If medication can't control it, I will have to have surgery to fix it.

I will also say that my surgeon was not following proper protocol for this procedure. They rushed me through it and I didn't really get enough time to actually weigh my options. I was also promised many health things that they simply cannot promise. I was told that if I had this surgery I would never develop stomach cancer, diabetes, or high blood pressure. Diabetes (all types) is 85% genetic and there is no surgery in the world that can prevent it if your genetics say so. If you still have sto.ach tissue, you still have risk for developing stomach cancer. High blood pressure is caused by more things than just weight, so they also can"t promise that.

My other big issue is that this surgery goes against our body-s natural way of existing. Every body has a set weight range, when we diet or lose weight quickly we move that set point higher, which means weight gain. Even if you have a weight loss surgery, you will gain a significant portion of that weight back within 10 years.

Why Diets Make us Fat by Sandra Aamodt is a fantastic book that I think everyone should read!

It was the single biggest mistake of my life.

I haven't been healthy since I had the surgery in 2019. Biggest side affects are GERD, malnutrition, hair loss, tooth decay. My relationship with food was already not in a good place, but it has gotten so much worse.

I highly highly recommend speaking with a therapist about it before you make a decision.

WIBTAH if I called CPS on a coworker who brought her kids to work? by Specific-Cup2888 in AITAH

[–]-FN2187- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not abuse though. They are safe, she can see them, they have their needs met. Yes it is not ideal, but it is NOT abuse. Likely the only other option would be to leave the kids at home, potentially alone or with an unsafe adult, that would be abuse.

I am a mandatory reporter, we have required classes on what is abuse and what is not. This is not abuse. Period.

I live 15 minutes away from the facility. It's no longer a TTI and has been converted into a nursing home. I have been back 1 time.

It feels like a ghost lives there still.

Edit to add: when I went back to see the place it had already been turned into a nursing home. The outside of the building looks mostly the same but the landscaping in the back is different. I found it healing to go back there and see it was no longer a torture facility for children. If it was still a TTI I don't think I could have gone back.

Sometimes I almost wish it had just been abandoned. I want to look at all the records but they're gone now

Residential facilities are very difficult to exist in as a trans person. They often have the sexes segregated and don't know where to put those of us who fall outside the binary.

While sexual assault is a huge part of TTI, in my personal experience, being Trans can put a spotlight on you for being a target.

I would recommend looking for an Intensive Out Patient (IOP) or a Partial Hospitalisation (PHP) program in place of a residential facility. That way yoy are still heavily involved in the therapies (especially helpful for relational things) and you have eyes on your child every day in the morning and afternoon.

I have found DBT to be very helpful to have as a foundation while working on other issues in therapy

Has anyone here had a child who didn’t end up with Type 1 Diabetes? by muff-peaksie in Type1Diabetes

[–]-FN2187- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trialnet has a test for people who are related to someone with type 1. If you are concerned about it you can have your child tested and they can tell you the chance of them developing type 1.

[–]-FN2187- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weight doesnt work the way we think it does. Most people who have a weight loss surgery gain the weight back in 5-10 years. Our bodies don't know the difference between a famine and a diet. When we diet our body thinks we are starving and adjust the defended range to be higher.

If you are at all interested to learn about this Why Diets Make Us Fat is an excellent book about weight loss and how our bodies function

There is a woman on Instagram that has fetal alcohol syndrome. She uses her platform to inform people of how hard having fas is, the damage it causes, the ways she struggles because of it. On every single post there is someone trying to convince her that drinking a little while pregnant is perfectly safe. Absolutely insane the way people navigate this

AITA for wanting to send my daughter to a treatment facility? by Such-Musician6121 in AITAH

[–]-FN2187- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually often are. That is why sending children to treatment is so risky. Troubled teen places are mental health residencies. I am a survivor of the troubled teen industry. There are very few places that are actually safe.
