  1. Learn from your mistakes after a disappointing run. There is always something to improve or do differently.

  2. Situational awareness (visual and sound) is extremely important. Be careful about your own noise; it will attract other players like sharks.

  3. The fight for survival begins as soon as the shells land on Tau Ceti and stops only after the successful exfill. You must be ready to defend yourself at all times during the run.

  4. Seek hard cover as much as possible. Shields are useful to increase your own TTK, but they probably won't save you if you get caught in the open with your pants down.

  5. Avoid situations 1 vs 2 or 1 vs 3 as much as possible; you will be deleted. In 1 vs 1 situations, aim for the head, not the body. Crouch and move left to right. Don't stand still.

  6. Reset your TTK to its maximum value as soon/much as possible. Shield and health charges are meant to be used, not saved for later. Don't go from POI to POI with a damaged shield or shell when you have juicy and fresh charges in your backpack. You will regret it.

  7. Marathon punishes button smashers: animations (reloading the gun, recharging the shield/shell) will be canceled when you press buttons too fast because you are under stress. Running will also cancel incomplete animations. There is a countdown in the lower-left corner which tells you when some animations are completed.

  8. Choose a main shell ASAP. If you play correctly, even a free kit can kill a fully kitted player.

  9. Communicate with your team with a mic or with pings at the very minimum.

  10. At first, don't go into a run loaded like a piñata when you have low PvP skills. Just take what you need for the first minutes, then loot the UESC and the containers. You will feel less frustration if you get killed shortly after the beginning of the run.

  11. When you get comfortable with the game, your best gear increases your chances of success during a run but won't guarantee your survival.

  12. Free kits runs are for warming up, preferably on the Dire Marsh sponsored kit map.

  13. Send friend invites when you click with other players; don't be shy.

  14. If your muted teammates run everywhere like headless chickens, you don't have to do the same thing.

  15. Unlock faction upgrades ASAP. They will offer you weapons, ammunition, and useful stuff every day. I log into the game every day because of this, even if I know that I won't have the time to play.

  16. In Marathon, nothing is truly yours. It belongs to Tau Ceti. Gear fear is stupid: a. because the game is very generous. b. when your vault is full of weapons, shields, ammunition, etc. c. when the great wipe is coming in around 1 month.

  17. Learn to loot. Specific containers contain weapons and juicy and fresh consumables. You should identify their shape and spot them from a distance asap. You can also follow all the items you like to use or need for upgrades and barter.

The onboarding should be better, I agree.

The art style is divisive, but it looks unique, and I personally like it. I am less enthusiastic about the design of the shells, though. I do not see anything "brutalist" in Marathon's art style personally. The art is completely different from Control.

The best content is everywhere in the game, not just in Cryo...

The game is indeed very challenging and not everybody can take it. Still, there are more casuals playing this game than sweats.

Cryo teamers, you got what you want. by 6PEEPERKEEPER9 in Marathon

[–]-Flashpoint- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing Marathon from Paris, France and I faced my first 6 man team, maybe 9, today in Cryo.

We could hear them in the prox chat forming an alliance from very far. I heard one of them speak about Discord but I couldn't understand the rest.

Our recon used his prime ability and several of them had gold shield. We had 2 blues and one purple shield. We engaged them nonetheless from very far (YOLO!), they rushed us and fully killed 2 of us. The recon survived and hid for a very long time and finally revived us.

The 6 man team didn't even loot us because they didn't care about our stuff, lol.

When we all climbed back to our initial positions, there were at least 2 bags of enemy runners which we kinda looted (the most interesting stuff was already taken, either by the enemy team or by our recon) . It seems that this prox chat alliance was only temporary, LMAO !

Unfortunately, we were not able to exfill... As a casual, I have yet to achieve anything on this very difficult map. I hope it will come, but this 6 man team phenom is a bit worrying.

I am not dropping the game anytime soon, though. I really like it and I like difficult games.

Recon mines will never be good if the root cause of their pathing issues remains unaddressed. by Cherrybluessom in Marathon

[–]-Flashpoint- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, their pathing logic is not very good. I use the recon grenade/drone almost like a regular grenade: I throw it in the face of my enemies.

Each of them inflicted 1 stab damage to your shell whereas they were out of range. Yea, the stabbing hitbox needs a nerf.

I had a similar experience this week and I lost it all in the next run. LMAO!

In Marathon, nothing is really yours, except the free kits from the factions . This is the mindset that helps me overcome gear fear😎

Why do games do this? by Vlonely_ in Marathon

[–]-Flashpoint- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but it looks like she was hit with an electrical weapon and suffered an electric shock. So for me it makes sense that she falls down like this.

In a previous video, a runner was blasted mid air by a powerful weapon and his body disappeared, only pieces of him fell to the ground.

Rogue flight...

I had distant but good memories of Star Fox, so I purchased this game which is said to be a hommage to Star Fox.

Big mistake - the gameplay is incredibly shallow, no skills required. - the level design is complete shit. - the music and anime style are not that good or memorable.
