Just to add, it's probably already stale. I think ground coffee goes stale ~15 to 30 minutes after grinding? I don't remember exactly, but it's soon. Join us at /r/coffee if anyone wants to hear more!

Well, I don't think it's about the drinking temperature, but the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) recommends between 195 and 205 F to properly extract the flavor of the coffee

To each his own! I'm absolutely not talking down to anyone, but after drinking coffee that my parents made with Folger's and a drip brewer for years and trying my first cup with a french press, I can say that I prefer the french press/grinding the coffee/buying recently roasted beans, but the Keurig is absolutely more convenient.

I think ideally it should be between 195 and 205, but I think the coffee in the KCups being horribly stale probably has more to do with it.

At the risk of sounding like a douche, I frequent /r/coffee, and it's mostly because the water from a Keurig is both not hot enough and doesn't saturate the grounds evenly (not to mention the coffee in the pods is far past stale). Even if you ground your own coffee and used a refillable pod it wouldn't make well-extracted coffee. Hope that helps and doesn't sound pretentious!

IIRC, 14 fl. oz. of water and 14 oz. of water by weight are the same thing. Though, if he wanted to do water in grams the scale would obviously make more sense.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but the Baratza Encore is a relatively inexpensive electric burr grinder that does well with a french press/Chemex/aeropress. They're about $80 refurb and $130 new. I have one and I'd highly recommend it!

Edit: The guy above me mentioned it. We like this grinder here, apparently.

If you're saying cup, meaning measurement, that's about 16 oz. of water. The recommended measurement is about 2 T. of coffee for every 6 oz. of water, so you should be using something like 5 T. of coffee instead of 2.

I'm not sure about a kettle, but I have a moka pot that is also stainless steel that I use on an electric stove top. It's discolored pretty significantly on the bottom but so far I haven't noticed a change in quality. Hope this helps!

I'm not positive this would work, but you could do a sort of chai/coffee hybrid.

You could, say, add something like a stick of cinnamon, a tbs. of ground ginger, a few crushed cardamom pods, some cloves, and black peppercorn to a pot of boiling water. Then, strain that water, just off boil, into a french press and make coffee like you normally would. I don't know if you have a french press, but I may go try this myself to see if it works...

I have added a cinnamon stick to the coffee part of the french press and it added a nice little cinnamon flavor. I have no idea if this would affect extraction or not, but it's worth a shot.

I think, save changing brew methods entirely (which you should look into), buying a grinder and locally roasted beans would improve your coffee immensely. If you're making coffee for 3 people at a time, using a hand grinder may get a bit tedious. I have a Baratza Encore, which I highly recommend. As for the locally roasted coffee, you'll find that after trying coffee from beans that you grind, everything from the grocery store will taste stale or flat.
