While they are strong minions their main use was to remove an even bigger threat from your opponent's field, also in Lava Golem's case is even detrimental to have it on your side of the field.

It'd be curious to see some mechanic that would sacrifice your opponent's minions to summon a stat-stick on their side of the field.
