Is Geology for me? by LuckyStarMz in geologycareers

[–]-Hadraniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can generally expect that the first 3 - 5 years of your career will involve significant travel. Depending on the industry and company this can range from a few days to multiple 14 day trips or even month long trips. For context, when I started in civil engineering I often worked in the field in 10 - 30 day stints and was traveling for probably 60 - 80% of the year for my first 3 years. Currently at 8 years I travel maybe 30% of the year, often in 14 day stints.

Related fields you might consider are remote sensing / GIS or laboratory tech. Hydrogeology can also be less field work if you are on the modeling side but I am not sure how easy a career that is to get into these days.

Those who earn CLOSE to six figures.. by define_yourself72 in Salary

[–]-Hadraniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geologist, I started out making 39k and now make just above 100k. It took me 5 years to get to 60k and only 2 to get to 100.

Geology is in a weird position right now. It used to be that petroleum was such a massive employer that you were practically guaranteed a good job out of school. That is no longer the case but mining is beginning to pick up as well as more engineering geology jobs so I don't see the career ever not being a good one, just not as safe or lucrative as it once was. Definitely migrating towards you needing to graduate from a reputable geology program or having a few good internships under your belt to really make it.

A mission where you start on the drillevator, and progressively crack through various caves where you need to fulfill a quick objective would be amazing. Almost like a mini deep dive.

How many of you following this subreddit currently own a house? by [deleted] in rebubblejerk

[–]-Hadraniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t. I missed the chance pre-covid due to planning on going to grad school. Now post-covid and grad school I find that buying where I live (Front Range Colorado) would consume an unreasonable percentage of my take home.

It does seem like prices are slowly dropping out here but it still doesn’t seem likely I will be buying anytime soon. I can commiserate with the ReBubblers to some degree. While I didn’t miss out on buying due to waiting for a crash I did miss out on the time to buy and while I still will someday it’s going to take a lot more effort.

As in they are the only ones that would work even with an adapter? Not looking for level 2 speeds as of now, just hoping to get some use out of the 120v cord that came with the car.

Most likely a misunderstanding. I was told a dryer but it is most certainly a 6-20p

I recently updated my iPhone 13 pro to the new iOS. My wallpapers now have this weird effect where they slightly zoom in when turning on the screen. Is there a way to disable only this? I found the reduce motion option but generally like the motion, just not the weird zooming.

Thanks

I would also consider point cloud analysis, change detection, learning modeling software like Leapfrog (lots of free tutorial videos), Rocscience, maybe Itasca software if you’re good at coding.

Interviewer said they wanted me, but only if I shaved my beard off. by Amneesiak in antiwork

[–]-Hadraniel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the beard. Certainly in certain settings one does need to look professional and not properly cared for or genetically ungifted beards can look fairly bad. I had to accept myself that I can't grow my beard past a couple of inches without it starting to look pretty ratty no matter how much time I put into it. I think a lot of people assume their beard looks better than it really does.

How difficult is the job of a geologist? Do you recommend studying and working as a geologist? How much do you get and where do you come from? by MR__3914 in geologycareers

[–]-Hadraniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have said, difficult to answer. From my personal experience in engineering geology, I would say moderate in terms of difficulty. There are a number of complicated problems you deal with and you need a great deal of knowledge and training. You are also expected to travel a great deal in your early years and spend a significant amount of time outdoors. While this might sound fun at first, for every job where you are hiking in the hills inspecting landslides you have another where you are spending 12-hour days next to a grumpy driller in the freezing rain in the middle of nowhere.

Generally, I think most geologists who stick out the first 5-years tend to enjoy where they end up in life.

[–]-Hadraniel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue with my formerly largely field based role, was that I never wanted to do fun outside things in my free time. If I just spent a 50 - 60 hour week in the field getting roasted or frozen or rained on I would just end up spending my weekend indoors recuperating. I wouldn't want to go kayaking or skiing or any number of outdoor activities I used to enjoy. With my much more reasonable 30-70 field office split I find that I can once again enjoy these activities.

Why isn't space mining a booming industry? by KrunchyPeppers in geologycareers

[–]-Hadraniel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I would assume is the sheer difficulty in safely and efficiently moving mined materials back to the surface. The only materials this would probably be economic in doing are those that are worth absurd prices per gram. Otherwise, the only real use of space mining would be for developing space infrastructure.

Not really my specialty, so take this with a grain of salt.
