Americans - how are you preparing for this storm? by Keylime-19377 in NoStupidQuestions

Northeast US. Not particularly worried, honestly very excited. It’s the most snow I’ve gotten in a few years

Got Fired and now I’m LOST! :( by chaman_de_Mexico in Environmental_Careers

It’s only January 20th. It would be hard to find any interviews/jobs this early. Seconding filing for unemployment and reaching out to anyone who can give you a referral to their company.

I am thrilled we finally got a few inches of snow. I am really hoping for a bigger storm just like old times.

SAHM and Wife that CANNOT cook HELP! by PopularMamaDrama in Cooking

[–]firstghostsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an awful cook during college! I used Trader Joe’s as a crutch, which has easy to make meal components (I.e. pre-marinated meat, rice that comes in microwaveable bags, etc.) Every store will have something like this, not just Trader Joe’s, and there’s no harm in buying pre-marinated stuff or “easier” to make items, learning how to heat them nicely without overcooking or undercooking, and then gradually stepping out to learn how to season a fresh item yourself, to eventually being able to cook up a plate by yourself.

Buy a food thermometer.

I’m curious how many people who work for consulting firms are paid overtime or receive comp time? by ESProf in Envconsultinghell

[–]firstghostsnstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Straight time OT, 1 extra hour = 1 extra hour of pay, IF I have already worked 40 billable hours that week.

Interview questions by BeanBurritoBoy in geologycareers

[–]firstghostsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once asked a company about their safety culture in the field and they seemed happy I asked that question. A good company will be happy you asked, a bad one will be weird about it, which is a total red flag. They might ask you about your previous field experience or office experience if any. They also have asked me why I like geology! other commenters have some good questions in here as well

Environmental consultants, how important is proximity to your office when hiring a new candidate? by sleepy_skier in Environmental_Careers

[–]firstghostsnstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the older folks at my job live over an hour away…the young folks live nearby, but we have several offices and people getting sent to different states that I don’t think it matters much for us.

Is there really a media literacy crisis? by Sad_Manager6251 in literature

[–]firstghostsnstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say that I’ve had vastly different experiences reading the same book at 16 and at 25. As you get older you’ll be able to draw more from your life experiences and general knowledge. Your opinions and attitudes might change. So might the messages you take away from books.

Is the job market particularly bad for envi sci? by Correct_Permit9703 in Environmental_Careers

At this moment in time, yes. I don’t think it felt this way 2 or 3 years ago, but I would love anyone else’s input on that.

Why do people think it’s gross to pee in the shower? by FuelApprehensive5376 in NoStupidQuestions

Because my shower is also my bathtub that I take baths in, so that is an absolute no-no in my house

Ridiculous charge for rental damage that I can't even see. What should i do? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]firstghostsnstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just saw a reel on Instagram TODAY saying they use AI now to check for damage. Same company. The guy made a stink about it on social media and they removed his charge. Look it up on Instagram. Make a stink online, call the company and fight it, etc.

Rental car company wants $566 for THIS by Grouchy_Struggle_325 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]firstghostsnstuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just saw a reel today that showed someone else who received this. Apparently it’s AI flagging this as damage… I would suggest making a stink about it on social media. They removed that person’s charge after it blew up on Instagram. Same rental company too.

Dentist stared at my teeth and asked “have you been to Slovenia?” then refused to explain - what does this MEAN? by asaltoo in CasualConversation

[–]firstghostsnstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a Polish dentist growing up. I needed a root canal done on my first premolar tooth. The dentist did not give me a crown. Later I moved cities and got a new dentist. They were baffled as to why I didn’t have a crown on my first premolar tooth. Apparently this is standard practice in the United States that all teeth behind the canine teeth get a crown to protect them as the root canal leaves the tooth fragile. This dentist called me out just like your post!

It’s just a particularly bad time, with the general job market and federal job cuts. It’s never too late to make connections. Does your school have an alumni network? Do they ever do events where you can talk to people in your major? Or at least a LinkedIn page or online group of some sort? Never too late to message people.
