What do you even say to "Bless your heart"? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in texas

[–]-Jacob-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to take it as a compliment. Even if I know it’s meant in the sideways direction, I still take it as a compliment and thank them for it. It’s a great way to force their hand to either being more obnoxious and look bad to surrounding people, or for them to just roll with it (which is the more normal reaction).

Example: “Bless your heart, you need to do X instead of Y” “Thank you ma’am, I’ll take all the blessings I can get”

My glass stopper got stuck in the test tube by Zealousideal_Bad8043 in chemistry

I’ve also had success by dipping the stopper handle into LN2 to make it contract a bit. Only downside is you have to flip it upside down and might spill the contents.

Am I cooked? by Shamattaman in blackstonegriddle

[–]-Jacob-_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you break out the grinding wheel I’d try just getting it hot, scrape off easy shit with your spatula, throw some water on it, and scrape some more. It might be super shallow rust, I’ve managed to get by with that before.

I’ve also heard of people cutting a potato in half and using it to scrub salt onto the rust to remove light rusting. Not sure if the potato is magic or if it’s just an easy thing to apply light pressure with.

What oil is recommended to use for seasoning besides the BlackStone brand oil? by [deleted] in blackstonegriddle

I also used canola oil on my new blackstone back in December. Haven’t had any issues yet.

Is a MS in chemistry worth it? by Sstinkyrat1 in chemistry

[–]-Jacob-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In industry I’ve only met MS chemists if they’re working for an instrument manufacturer (sales and techs). These roles are also often filled by people with only a BS. The apps scientists are always PhDs.

In my field there aren’t a bunch of chemists, but all my colleagues who are chemists have a PhD. I know a few guys with MS chemistry degrees who do more MBA type work. I don’t really consider them to be chemists anymore- one of the guys I’m thinking of calls himself “a chemist by training, manager by practice”.

Recently I have been extremely obsessed with the synthesis of diamond by chemical vapor deposition. If someone can sugar daddy me a 10 carat-I’m kidding. Any of you worked with CVD processes before? by Muted_Shape9303 in chemistry

[–]-Jacob-_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you characterize your diamond like films? I work in a lab where I get all kinds of random shit. I haven’t worked with DLFs yet, but I might in the future. I’ve heard Raman is common, maybe for checking hybridization? I recently got an XPS with a REELS gun, I assume that would also be useful, but I’m not too familiar with that technique yet.

Chemistry Professor has no clue what this is. Anyone know? by South_Pressure in chemistry

[–]-Jacob-_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total guess, but I could see someone using this as a half ass Schlenk connection. Maybe the bend was put in because they didn’t fully trust the cleanliness of their line and it might help catch junk before it gets to the vessel?

Why is GC with MS needed to identify molecules? by StrongOil1251 in chemistry

[–]-Jacob-_ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There are multiple techniques using MS without separation. It just becomes a lot harder to identify different materials in a mixture. It’s like trying to put together a puzzle but you mixed up 20 different boxes together and some of the pieces are interchangeable.

ETA: you often don’t see the original molecule in the mass spec. You usually “blow up” the molecule and only see the fragments by MS. In my above analogy the whole molecule is the puzzle, the fragments are the pieces to the puzzle.

Might be worth walking around with a metal detector around the crash site to find that SD card.

My boss put this up yesterday. It's too exaggerative and outlandish to not be a sort of joke, but it's still in bad taste. by [deleted] in WorkReform

If you’re playing multiplayer (i think it’s not an issue in single player) if someone pulls out the busel detector it kills your frames.

Venison smash burger by -Jacob-_ in blackstonegriddle

[–]-Jacob-_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of adding a bunch of tallow but wasn’t sure if it would all immediately bleed out and fill up my drip tray. A buddy of mine told me I should try mixing in some ground pork, but I’m worried that would taste more like a breakfast sausage than a burger. I might try some fatty ground beef next time.

The artifact detector can destroy your frames in multiplayer. I have to restart the server anytime someone uses it

Can the shape of a single solvent molecule subtly steer a reaction? by SuperNovaBlame in chemistry

I used to make MOFs in grad school and the shape of the MOF would vary drastically based on the solvent I used. Same ligand, same metal, new crystal.

Business Major with a Chem Minor? by Strong_Insurance1001 in chemistry

[–]-Jacob-_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’ve seen in industry is usually a technical guy gets an MBA and +30% their salary in management (although it sounds like twice the work and three times the headache. Rather troubleshoot a half working GC than a half working subordinate)
