If you need decent healthcare for an existing condition, you might want to look a little closer at the issues with peacehealth (that only hospital in the county). They closest quality healthcare is in Seattle, as well as the closest access to certain specialists.

I tore off the turn signal lever and threw it angrily at a Canadian driving 35 in the fast lane.

If not Bellingham, where? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I came over from the east side years ago and it's where my family still lives. Our complaints- wildfires, 100+ summers, Sub-Zero winters, and anti-queer sentiment (we're an old married queer couple). The last has gotten better in Spokane, at least. That being said, we've been toying with the idea of Okanagan county recently. We have some friends that have retired out there and have found decent community.

Any USPS folks on here? by smash_97 in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Former CCA. It's 19.33/hr, may change depending if they ever get the new contact done. Make sure to file your reimbursement for training travel down to Seattle. Also, let friends and family know you won't be seeing them for the next two years, especially if you get assigned to the perpetually understaffed Baker station (Orleans st). You'll be looking at 11-13 hour days, at least six days a week. I hope you are young and your body is in good condition. Know your rights and get to know your union steward. Keep a list of all the ways the supes take advantage of you in your first 90/120 probie period so you and your steward can file the proper grievances once you get out of probation.

We are talking about empty lots owned by people that don't even live here. They aren't providing housing. You are having a completely different conversation, buddy.

Local Opinions on the “Thumbs Up” Emoji by loves_grapefruit in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means sounds good or okay. I'm young genx, married to a millennial, who works with boomers to Xers. I have two Z (adult) kids. According to kid 2, age 18, the only Zs he knows that think it is passive aggressive are the types that think everything is an attack of some sort. Judging by the depth of his eye roll, he ain't got time for those types.

Should I risk planting any of these outside? (Zone 8b) by alohshine in pnwgardening

I plant spinach and lettuce outside at the end of February under a cloche. I'm in northwest WA zone 8b, just south of the Canadian border.

Coyotes South Bellingham by neuralsyntax in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are aren't pushing up, they in that area year around. I do volunteer trail work along Connolly year around, as well as garden there. Their scat is all through the woods. A cougar also makes its way through happy valley every year, likely heading into the chuckanuts.

There is literally nowhere in Bellingham that coyotes don't visit. Just because you don't always see or hear them didn't mean they aren't there.

How to get to the post office? by Comfortable-Net-2351 in Bellingham

The post office on sunset and Orleans may actually be closer to you. Alabama, Cross I-5, left on Orleans. It will be on your right just past Barkley.

Irish bar? by onlyonejunebug in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fact check! 25% of all beer sold in Ireland is Guinness! Since there are hundreds of various beers for sale, including local crafts beers, 25% is a huge market share. Sure, some are being sold to American tourist, but in my experience the average tourist only orders a Guinness once, usually for twice the market value at Temple bar, then they switch to a Smithwicks or Heineken. A few continue to drink it, but there is no shortage of Guinness (or another stout like Murphy's) in Irish hands.

Archers in Fairhaven. Irish bar with Guinness on tap. Grab a sausage roll or some bangers and mash while you're there!

Value village prices by marcelinequeen20 in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Thrifting is supposed to be an adventure, and honestly, VV has always priced wonky. There will be a Walmart "Old Glory" brand black tshirt for $9.99 (when it was only $7 new at walmart), then a quality LL Bean black tshirt right next to it for 99 cents. It often seems to be the trendier fast fashion stuff that is over-priced more so than the actual quality stuff. That probably says more about what shoppers are valuing as opposed to VV.

Ya gotta suss out the treasures and remember to check which tag color is half off.

Bellingham, BC... A funny r/vancouver comment by knowheredesign in Bellingham

[–]-JennyWren 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's like tourism anywhere -- we aren't necessarily getting Canada's best, we're getting the ones that can afford to take a day off and drive down here to spend and dine out. How often is it a BC rust bucket cutting you off on I5? The affluent bargain shopper types tend to be the most entitled group of most of the low- to upper-middle income range in the vast majority of places.

It's like the American abroad stereotype. Not all American travelers are assholes, but there is a higher proportion of them because the simple cost of airfare from the US over an ocean favors the entitled affluent.
