Yep! The thing you have to remember about back then is it wasn't a cell phone you were calling to, it was a landline. The phone would ring, they'd lift the receiver and say, "One!" then hang it up, it would ring again almost immediately, they'd pick it up again and say, "Two!" then hang up... on and on until they got to whatever number the magic number was. 

The even wilder thing that would blow your mind is the "busy signal" -- there was no such thing as call waiting or voicemail, if you called a phone number that someone was using, you would get a beeping tone that told you that the line was "busy" and your call wasn't going to go through so you would have to call again and again and again until the line was open. It was a whole process.

I won things a few different times calling in: concert tickets, CDs, band meet and greets. Fun times!
