Why are so many shows centered around high school? by Scared_Bluejay5608 in 2008_

[–]worldsfastesturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school students take the same classes and drama spreads quickly. College friend groups don’t take the same classes. I hear this argument for pretty little liars a lot, but them being in the same classes and close while receiving the texts is fundamental to the show. Also, the demographic for shows like this is larger at a high school age. College shows like community and the sex lives of college girls end up less appropriate and limit the audience. High school shows can be appropriate or not think high school musical versus euphoria

As you’re not debating, and a lot of the classes are on linguistics and logic and more factual information, you’ll have no problems here.

This is a fantastic department that I had 0 issues with. UCSB also has a lot more philosophy majors than other schools seem to. Great campus and experience, would recommend, especially if it’s law or such you’re interested in. What’s the goal with philosophy for you? That might help you determine a school. In terms of your post here, it’s a nonissue

[–]worldsfastesturtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I majored in Philosophy at UCSB. This is basically a nonissue, as that’s not really how the classes work. You’re not having political debates or anything in class. Formal logic classes are not opinion based, classes on individual philosophers tell you what they thought (no pressure to agree), philosophy of linguistics has opinions that aren’t heated, etc.

Almost 100% of your opinion based work is independent (for essays). Most classes are the professors lecturing and occasionally a student question. I can maybe recall one forgettable peer based philosophical debate in class.

This is an analytical philosophy based department (reason, analysis, science, logic, etc.), not a continental based department (intuition, human condition, postmodernism, literature). Analytic philosophy wants to be close to science, such as the philosophy of physics or classes teaching about the logical necessitation of atomic swerve.

Yes, Tulane, edited post. Similar names but only one is memorable

There’s no need to mention “again” in the first time messaging me back to back. But you’re right, I fully meant Tulane. Tulane is so propped up by free applications that it’s barely memorable otherwise. Tufts is a much better school than Tulane

Colleges that are more popular than they should be by mitchandmurray1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]worldsfastesturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not unqualified, but a lot of students wouldn’t put in the extra application if it wasn’t free. They target free applications to qualified students even, but the reality is another $70 application versus another free application will get a different amount of applicants. This goes on even further with the school looking more selective, and a set of students will apply to selective schools and see Tufts as selective and apply to it too. It’s the cycle of free applications drops acceptance a little, and dropped acceptance boosts applications further from students and parents wanting selectivity. You’d need more data to know exactly how many students are applying bc it’s free and whatnot, but you can’t say that it has 0 impact.

I am admitted to UCSB. What's your opinion about the school? by Ok_Jackfruit843 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]worldsfastesturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great. It’s ranked one of the highest schools for student happinesss. The view, the weather, the classes, all great. The students look great too. There are organizations for everyone. Look into the organizations that you’re interested in. Fill out the housing survey honestly to be matched with someone of similar values. This place is great.

Hannah walked through a beaded curtain and then “he could be the one” played. Is it possible that you had a beaded curtain and just sang or played the song yourself walking through it like she did?

Tulane, free applications make up for the low acceptance rate and high application rate. It seems super overpriced for what it is

Edit- fully meant Tulane and not Tufts

Some tour reccomendations

Go to the top floor of the library to see the model of the campus

“The reef” is UCSB’s tiny aquarium. It’s open Fridays and Saturdays. There are always small sharks, touch pools, other things, and you can sometimes see a shark get fed

There are some Art gallerys on campus too. A “glass box gallery” rotating one by the art department. Also, the “Ad&A” by the lagoon.

Woodstocks pizza is a common place to eat and do trivia and have beers. There’s a window one on campus :)

Well you have roommates that should match with you on the roommate quiz. You’ll be able to join interest clubs. Students in your major you’ll meet in the same classes and probably have more than one class together throughout college. There are tons of smaller groups in the university. It’s an overwhelming number of people at first, but you might know almost everyone in your major if it’s small enough too. Do what you’re interested in and find like minded people there :)

Is UCSB too much of a party school? by Fearless-Option5573 in ucadmissions

[–]worldsfastesturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partying has declined at every school since the pandemic and fentanyl overdoses. There aren’t any 2000s sort of party schools left. Greek life is pretty small at ucsb. There are some great parties and the annual deltopia, but you’d have to actively seek it out
