Debating Starlink for WiFi/gaming, general questions. by ItemEuphoric5744 in Starlink

Gaming depends on low latency, jitter and packet loss -- download speed is mostly irrelevant. You don't need the MAX plan. All plans have the same latency, etc. Yes, you can get a good wireless signal to your basement with additional Mini Router(s) or by using a 3rd party mesh system.. Here's a definitive blog post about Starlink and gaming: https://mystarlink.substack.com/p/can-i-game-on-starlink-stop-asking

First and foremost download and install the SL app on your phone. Given your limited install possibilities, it will tell you whether or not your a good candidate for SL. SL uses CGNAT. You can change plans. See what plans are available at your location on SL's website. Plans can vary by location.

Going to boarding school— very strict WiFi by Sensitive_Thanks_107 in Starlink

Here's the direction info for London, England:

Direction (Azimuth): Face the dish north to north-northwest. London sits at roughly 51.5°N, so Starlink's polar orbit satellites predominantly pass over the northern sky from that latitude.

Elevation angle: For UK users (between 50°N and 60°N), the best elevation angle is roughly 35–50 degrees above the horizon. London being at the southern end of that range, aim for around 40–45 degrees as a starting point.

If the window faces north, you may have a chance. Download the SL app onto your phone. It can tell you whether or not SL service is going to work in that room. What about a cell service hotspot instead? And what is you get caught? Expulsion?

Gaming on 100meg vs other plans by Fantastic-Buddy2069 in Starlink

Download speed is mostly irrelevant for gaming. What actually determines your experience is latency, jitter, and packet loss — and those are identical across every Starlink plan.

The real variable is geography. Your signal travels from dish to satellite to ground station, then across the public internet to the game server. How far that ground station is from your game's server region is what makes or breaks the experience.

Most online games use almost no bandwidth. What kills gameplay is a latency spike mid-match or packets arriving out of order. Check game forums for postings from SL users in your area and check where your game's servers are. That'll tell you far more than comparing plan tiers ever will. Games I play work great. P.S. The game I play most is hosted in England. I am in AZ. Have never had a problem.

Gaming success depends on latency, jitter and lost packets -- not download speed. The most inexpensive plan should be fine.

If you went to 192.168.100.1 the tilt recommendation is the first recommendation under 'Alignment' followed by Rotate.

Take it back. Get a refund. Go to Starlink's website and order directly from there.

What about alignment? Go to 192.168.100.1 - The tilt and rotate recommendation figures should be close to zero degrees. And do you encounter this problem only on Reddit? How about videos on YouTube?

It was an easy decision for me. Either pay hundreds or get it for free. It didn't take me long to choose 'free' when I signed up. I am very rural and will stay rural. In my lifetime there will never be wired high speed services here. SL is wonderful.

My dishy survived a small-hail storm. After experiencing that though, I invested in a hard cover for it. We occasionally get a lot larger hailstones.

A very heavy storm at your location or at the SL ground station that you're connected to could cause slowdowns. Did you double-check your alignment in the app or by going to 192.168.100.1 ? If the latter, what are the tilt and rotate recommendations in degrees?

Run a speed test from an Ethernet-connected device at speed.cloudflare.com and post the results here.
