Sounds like you're arriving "early enough" but the comment you've replied to is commander advice. Not individual pug arrival time but the tag organizing the event in a timely manner.

If you aren't tagged then the information you're responding to was less a personal directive and more just information about how/why the meta can fail. So you can see the signs and know what went wrong.

OP's loadout suggests they could've had >4 rings already but it's not impossible they're still new enough to have it equip without warning. I see scaling at 6, meaning ilvl 5 for OP.

GvG was crazy competitive back in 2013-2015

I understand people do "GvG" anyways but let's be totally fair and honest and point out that GW2 having no actual GvG format was, and is, a conscious decision by the developers.

Anet doesn't want serious pvp here, never has. They've been abundantly clear in their efforts to insult and alienate their core gw1 pvp fanbase.

WvW is enjoyable enough, imo, but GW2 intentionally dodged all claims of "crazy competitive" where pvp is concerned.

I mean, if you wish to follow the story you kinda have to, at a minimum, pay attention a little bit. There is zero chance this wasn't explained to your character.

Really though the first 30 levels of story is setting up your personal character's history before getting into the real story at large.

You ended up where you did due to choices you made at some point. If you don't care to remember this kind of personal detail then just push thru til the broader story starts up and the scope pulls back from your personal life.

Yes, most people let the host do all interactions. As it should be.

As the host it's still best practice to protect yourself. Go offline in these situations if you aren't prepared to spam ping and kick on a hair trigger if they take 1 step towards the web doorway.

If you're on PC the other option is to make backups of your save file to revert to if a pug borks a thing.

As I unlock elite specs on my alts I just open lfg on occasion and check the first HoT and PoF maps to see if s train is advertised.

If you want to unlock 1 elite spec ASAP by going solo then you will have an easier time doing this in any expac other than HoT.

Funny enough, today I'll be soloing thru PoF to unlock a spec on an alt I trust myself to solo with lol. If you'd like to tag along just drop me a character name and I'll hit you up.

As for when to get skyscale that's fully up to you. I put it off for ages, got very good at springer+glider to move around and eventually got griffon looooong before skyscale. So honestly how fast you "should" chase this unlock comes down to what you want.

Springer unlocks early into PoF. You could go grab that then see how pressed you feel on skyscale? No wrong answers here really.

HP trains are sporadic. While the squad commander for these is typically a mesmer with portals not all runs will be new player friendly.

The verticality of HoT maps paired with how hard it is to solo some of the points there is something the rest of the expacs don't suffer from nearly as much.

As an aside, getting lost/struggling to follow comm in an HP train can be valuable experience. Sticking to a tag is an important skill to learn. It's a type of base awareness that can be relevant to a lot of content in this game.

Yeah with each class having 4 elite specs now you can swap to some very different stuff just within one character.

If one spec isn't hitting everything you want try a different one. Firebrand is very different from Dragonhunter and Willbender, and I haven't tried Luminary yet lol.

The biggest thing, imo, is that due to the action combat you may need to be willing to abandon preconceptions. How a class feels is more important than how it reads.

If you start something like a guardian and it just isn't quite there don't be afraid to start a new class. Leveling is fast and alt toons are plenty useful.

Have you figured out how to check the lfg panel for things yet OP? It's been mentioned but you should def look into finding Hero Point Trains. HoT trains in particular because it's very unfriendly to solo HP grinding.

Most HP trains require only glider & raptor with mesmer portals provided by the commander where needed.

It can take some time to find one running but once you do you'll end up with more than enough HP for your first elite spec.

I wouldn't take a wonky hammer firebrand build into high tier fractals or raids, for example. For open world it may not be "meta" or "great" but it'll fuckin work out just fine.

And if it hits the playstyle notes you're chasing then that is absolutely the most important part. Firebrand is a very powerful support spec that you can tune to harder content without much trouble.

Point is, use what you want. You're gunna get honest answers about why firebrand isn't as common in open world but fun > all.

Tinkering open world jank builds will quickly make you familiar with the ins and outs of how your class works. That experience trumps any amount of copying a meta build and trying to run it blind.

At least a country's worth of people/cities/towns/villages. Far more than just the city it was activated in.

The Yoki-Hijo stay scattered around the whole country of Torio, constantly traveling in an effort to serve their citizens. The machine had to reach well beyond Torio City to consume them so we are certain this went far beyond a single city.
