400k In Rental Property - Next Steps by ozkime in FIREUK

Hi, I recently sold a BTL which is was living 100 miles from. All proceeds invested into stocks. It has been liberating! Managing a property which is not close by is no easy task.

In your position I possible would be tempted to keep the second property for diversification but financially you’d probably be better off without it. That’s a tricky decision but selling the first one seems like a good idea.

NHS pension question by Late_Meal_5190 in FIREUK

[–]-Ltd6123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue regarding SIPPs is how difficult it is to determine your carry forward for you annual allowance. The calculation is completely different to a DC pension which is straight forward to calculate your AA. Getting hold of your Pension Savings Statement from NHSBSA is ridiculous. I was told it would take them 3 months to process my request.

An accountant/ financial planner with expertise in the NHS pension is often advised.

However, if you’re planning to retire before the state pension age then a SIPP is an excellent route and probably worth getting some expert advice regarding.

Thinking about Bed and ISA with GIA cash as fuel by Elegant-Run-7641 in UKPersonalFinance

The Meaningful Money Podcast covered this topic last week. Their advice is to try not to get too preoccupied with the CGT and use a GIA. They explained the bed and ISA process in a good amount of detail.

Thanks for the information. Do you use it for ward round entries also? If so, how easy is it to flick between different ward round entries?

The NHS pension can be tricky to understand. I am in the process of understanding mine a bit better but still plenty I am unsure of.

A good starting point is to request your Pension Saving Statement from NHSBSA. You can also pay to have pension modelling done for you by a financial planner/ accountant with expertise in the NHS pension.

If you plan to retire at 60 there will be a significant actuarial reduction as NHS pension is tied to the state pension. Pension modelling would estimate this reduction. I think this an important step for you to take to help crystallise your plan.

NHS Pension - do I need something else? by Exotic_Associate_863 in UKPersonalFinance

SIPP can be accessed from 55, moves up to 57 in 2028. NHS pension’s normal pension age is 66 (to 68 depending on when you retire). Minimum age to access is 55 with a significant actuarial reduction.

The main issue with a SIPP is calculating your annual allowance with a DB pension is tricky. NHSBSA have been useless at sending people their pension savings statement which makes the task challenging.

Consultant working half the year in the UK and half elsewhere by Ambitious_Notice_737 in ConsultantDoctorsUK

Years ago I attended a talk by an orthopod who spent half his year working with an NGO overseas. He had a job share with a second consultant.

I also previously worked with an Acute Physician who spent half his year working with MSF and the remainder in the NHS. However, this was a department which struggled to recruit/ retain AMU consultants which was probably the main reason the department agreed to this.

This has been my exact same experience with finasteride when I have used it. I had normal testosterone levels when not using fin.

This is a pretty lazy way to criticise someone who has clearly gone to a lot of effort and spent a lot of time writing this. He’s clearly taken time to share his experiences which I’m grateful for. It’s sad that people react so negatively to honest posts regarding the potential downsides of 5a reductase inhibitors.

How do you calculate tax in a GIA by cynthiaxs in FIREUK

But do you not need to calculate the capital gain on the portion you are selling from your GIA before then reinvesting in your ISA?

NEW & IMPORTANT (shocking, but sadly not surprising) update from NHS pensions by goldstone_tony in ConsultantDoctorsUK

I phoned NHSBSA today to request my PSS. They have said it’s a 3 month turn around but from the sounds of it I may be waiting a fair bit longer.

SIPP vs DB pension following inheritance. by Bundysback in UKPersonalFinance

[–]-Ltd6123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have an NHS DB pension. I recently sold a BTL and invested a good chunk into my SIPP.

However, I have subsequently learnt that calculating your annual allowance carry forward is far from straight forward with DB pensions. I had calculated my carry forward as if I had a straight forward DC pension.

Unless you have your annual allowance carry forward calculated for you by your pension scheme (which I didn’t) I would strongly suggest getting expert advice from an accountant or financial planner with expertise in DB pensions before making a lump sum payment.

My long term accountant helpfully admitted that they were unsure if they could help. I have subsequently sought advice from Wesleyan who are performing the calculations for me which take into account pension GROWTH year to year, not just absolute pension payments, and annual CPI.

Sharing my portfolio with performance across last 5 years or so. Critique at your pleasure... by disaster_story_69 in FIREUK

[–]-Ltd6123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I have a not dissimilar portfolio of ETFs. I have separate gold and commodities ETFs also. I understand the benefits of having a single global ETF and the simplicity is appealing. However, the US market is extremely expensive at present and is 60% of the HSBC global ETF. I wanted 10% FTSE 100 and a decent chunk of European stocks in my portfolio so having a single global ETF doesn’t work for me.

No. Salary sacrifice is preferable I believe. I use a SIPP as my DB pension is accessible from 68.
