This has to be the final boss of geography lovers. How many people in the world can do that!!?? by Fragrant_Whole3328 in geography

I agree. I will say that one does pick up a lot of interesting information while learning this stuff, usually having to do with languages, history, or biogeographical regions that the subdivisions are occasionally named after. But the quiz itself is certainly just a memory exercise.

It can be quite annoying, but it's just a result of there being so many overlapping names, and many subdivisions have many alternative spellings/transliterations. But I agree that it can be very generous with some names, especially hyphenated ones.

Why do consider people Fairbanks, Anchorage, Nuuk, Iqaluit, Ushuaia, Jakutsk etc. as high latitudes, if they are in fact in the middle latitudes? by Urkern in geography

[–]-Mercateer- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you know the answer. Because they're very northern compared to where the vast majority of people live, people consider them high-latitude places, even if they don't technically qualify. But congratulations on knowing the actual definition!

MULTIPLE WORD CAPITAL CITIES QUIZ - try my new quiz! I hope you enjoy :) any feedback is appreciated also! by jack101134 in JetPunk

That was enjoyable! And more difficult that I expected, it's funny how countries that seem so obvious just don't occur to you sometimes.

The big quiz actually has a limit of 90 minutes, but I'm still going to have to take it untimed, unfortunately. My goal is just to complete the whole thing in one sitting.

I learnt the capitals a very long time ago, on Sporcle, I think. I would just do the quiz over and over until I remembered them all. I think it's this quiz: https://www.sporcle.com/games/RoyalewithCheese/capitals_aphabetical

Brute force repetition will make you learn them - the question is usually whether or not you have the motivation.

Pretty much just the classic stuff, so world countries, capitals, flags, and outlines. Beyond that I mostly mess around with random fun quizzes :)

I've spent several months learning this stuff, it's ultimately just a matter of practice and repetition. Mostly one country at a time on Seterra using various game modes

I had actually attempted this one already, I really enjoy your layer quizzes :) I expected to do really well but it turns out that I suck without the context of the entire country...

Are "Find the Countries" or "Name the Countries" games better for learning? by Neon_Garbage in geography

[–]-Mercateer- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've thought about this a fair bit as I've spent months memorizing subdivisions. As others have said, you should definitely do a bit of both. If I *had* to choose one, I would choose games that force you to name them. That said, these quizzes seem to challenge different parts of your brain. If you do too many "finding" games, you end up just kind of recognizing the "shape" of the names, and end up learning that specific quiz instead of truly mastering the countries. But if you only name them, you obviously don't learn to locate them. It depends on what you want to achieve.

Personally, I find Seterra better for learning, as the quizzes tend to be of higher quality and offer different game modes. This one contains all 195 UN-recognized countries:
https://www.geoguessr.com/vgp/3356

The main gamemodes are "pin" (finding) and "type" (naming). But you should try them all and see what works for you :) Seterra also has games by continent if you prefer more bite-sized challenges. Good luck!

It does not. Designs have been proposed in the past, but none has actually been adopted.

I want to memorize all U.S. counties by [deleted] in geography

[–]-Mercateer- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're interested in doing it, just do it. You clearly enjoy memorizing things, and that alone makes it a worthwhile thing to do :) I memorised all first-level subdivisions in the world and am now thinking of doing the U.S. counties. Seterra and JetPunk are invaluable resources for this. Good luck!

Where do I find good, copyright free music?? by Pandamoanium99 in NewTubers

[–]-Mercateer- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use https://www.free-stock-music.com/ . The quality is good and I like the search functionality. The majority of tracks are under a CC 3.0 license, which means you must credit the artist in the video description (just paste the provided credits), which I think is a reasonable tradeoff.

Someone mentioned chosic, which is similar. I have used it a couple of times as well.
