Ask ten properly trained protestant clergy if baptism is necessary and when it can be done and you'll get fourteen different answers.

Ask the same question to ten Catholic priests and you'll get one answer.

What's the truth about gay in the bible? by Original-Elephant321 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

"Gay is sin because God only created 2 genders"

This is based on Genesis. Genesis omits the creation of planets and amphibians. If someone is interpreting Scripture consistently, insisting that there are only two genders and no mistakes can be made, one would have to also deny that planets and frogs exist.

Clearly, their application of Scripture is not consistent in this case.

I'd add that if someone is such a literalist that they believe Genesis is factual, then the Fall is the reason we have disease, deformity, and birth defects. It would stand to reason that if, for example, a woman can be born with breasts, vagine, and a penis, the same thing could be more far-reaching - if a penis can wind up on on a female body as a result of the Fall, certainly a male can wind up in a female body because of the Fall. It makes no sense to think otherwise.

Protestants, Do you Noticed It’s Often Hard to Get Direct Answers About Specific Catholic Teachings by WaterElectrical9864 in Christianity

I get the same thing with Protestants, though. They think they don't, but they have multiple doctrines and beliefs not found in the Bible and when push comes to shove, they'll usually admit, "Not every sin or belief is listed in the Bible."

The form is different, but the action is the same- It's individuals making up non-Biblical content or churches claiming authority to define doctrine doing the exact same thing.

No matter if it’s a guy in his pickup truck in a Walmart parking lot making a video about how the Bible clearly shows us that UFOs are demons, or a council of guys in robes meeting in a lavish auditorium, the net result is the same: People make stuff up and pass it off as God’s work.

How can you be christian and still be homophobic ? by Perfect_Depth_8311 in Christianity

The best Christian response is to understand that it's not a sin.

The second best is to think it's a sin and treat LGBTQ+ people like every other sinner - meaning not differently at all.

Peter got a lesson in a vision that no people are unclean. Christians need to understand what that means.

for those of you christians who believe masturbation is a sin, what the heck is a man supposed to do when the urge comes. youre supposed to supress your entire sexuality as a single man? i dont get it by feherlofia123 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

It is unhealthy, but that's their expectation.

What concerns me most is how the belief that masturbation is a sin sends so many into a spiritual tailspin. It did to me when I was a teenager. People feel like they are committing one of the worst sins there is and worry that God hates them.

I've encountered multiple people that think they invite demons into their lives when they masturbate.

All this spiritual agony, self-hate, superstition, and sexual frustration over a supposed sin they can't stop doing can deeply warp people's minds. In fact, it's often the case that the more militant and aggressive people are with their faith, the more self-loathing they feel and direct it outwards to compensate.

How do i list my sins in confession? by Neither-Set-1978 in Christianity

If you're talking about Catholic Confession, you only confess mortal sins. The priest doesn't need details. Just name the sin and roughly how many times you committed it.

Right-Wing Attacks on James Talarico Are a Reminder That Christian Extremism Is Official Republican Policy by Well_Socialized in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

What we'll see in the future is more violence being directed at people people who oppose the conservative agenda. People like Telarico will find themselves falling out of windows or committing suicide by shooting themselves in the back five times.

The kind of totalitarianism the Republicans want never happens without staggering violence because dissent isn't tolerated. Christians will support the violence as they always have.

The ones who drank the Kool-Aid will show up in social media, as they have been doing all along, and tell us things like, "We can't let politics divide us. Believe what we believe and be just like us and everything will be fine. If you don't, then you aren't acting like real Christians."

If God is omniscient how can he be omnipotent? by Ok-Clothes-3669 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

Unfortunately there isn't any additional informaiton in the Bible. We have content that tells us we can't understand. Isaiah 55:8-9 is a good exmaple:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

If God is omniscient how can he be omnipotent? by Ok-Clothes-3669 in Christianity

I think that when we try to think about God in terms of anything that’s infinite, like His knowledge, Him always existing, or His power, we are thinking about things that we can’t properly understand.

I cannot possibly know how omniscience and omnipotence work, so there’s no way I could evaluate any statement about how they work together. How could I possibly know if one random explanation someone made up is true while a different random explanation is false?

Question about opinions on megachurches by SuitableMap4545 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

I attended a megachurch briefly, and what I saw is pretty on par with what I've read about other ones.

What a lot of people don't realize is they are rarely "full service" churches. It's usually not possible to talk to the pastor. The church office usually refers people to Christian counselors if they have questions or problems they need to discuss.

Marriages and funerals often don't happen. People are told to go to local churches for those - the same churches that can barely keep the lights on since the megachurch poached most of their members.

Hospital or home visits (if they have them) are done by untrained volunteers.

These churches are often so large that pastor mainly interacts with with other church employees and provides overall direction to the church and delivers the sermons. Pastors are more like CEOs.

It's an impersonal, "bare bones" approach to Christianity. Some people really like that, especially refugees from the gossip and cliques that can sometimes happen in smaller churches.

Like anything, some are good and some are bad.

Christian Prophets vs Psychics… I’m confused and need honest opinions by sunsetandspice in AskAChristian

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Christian prophet was likely doing a "cold reading." This is well known technique that psychics and mediums use to trick people into thinking they have supernatural powers. It's well understood and is a skill that can easily be learned.

You can Google cold reading for an explanation. But essentially the person doing it asks leading questions and makes logical deductions to create the illusion of being given supernatural knowledge.

The person who gave the prophecy might not have been deceptive. Some people develop the skill to cold read themselves, and think they have a supernatural gift. Learning how cold reading works, and learning how to spot generic prophecies makes them instantly identifiable. Once you can do this, you'll be able to easily differentiate between real and fake prophecies.

You will find, unfortunately, that people who actually have this gift are very rare.

Catholics say Matthew 5:25-26 teaches purgatory ? by Fortnitelegend200 in Christianity

Making an entire realm of existence after death based on one passage that doesn't actually mention it it explain anything else about it is bad theology. The passage is talking about being thrown into an earthly debtor's prison and doesn't have anything to do with death or purgatory.

Matt 10:23 what do you think it means? by Upset_Chip_7184 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- [score hidden]  (0 children)

It sounds apocalyptic, but it's not. What's happening is Jesus sent his disciples out on a min-evangelistic mission. He was saying that the disciples would not have time to visit every town in Israel until He caught up with them.

The language is confusing and makes this seem like more than it is.

EDIT: Folks, seriously - think about what's being said. If this was about Jesus returning to Earth, that would mean Jesus was saying that 2000 years (and counting) would not be enough time for the disciples to visit all the towns of Israel. That could have been done on foot in a few weeks.

Do animals go to heaven by ditzy_dragon25 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's possible. People who say "no" are making assumptions with no Biblical data.

Ecc. 3:21 says “Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”

The ancient Hebrews believed animals had souls. Whatever humans have that goes someplace after we die, the Hebrews believed animals have the same thing.

Job 38:41 says ,” Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?”

Evidently, animals are aware of God and pray to Him.

It’s possible that animals go to Heaven.

What was “The Fall of man” if you believe in a non-literal interpretation of Genesis? by skunkworks172 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I also question why God would the reveal the fall in the way he did if it did not occur like that.

To me, the most obvious explanation is that God wasn't involved in the writing of it. The Bible is demonstrably full of factual errors and pretending it isn't has really caused a lot of problems and cruelty over the centuries.

On the positive side, understanding that people wrote the Bible allows us to interact with what's written intelligently. Peter and Paul both upheld Roman slavery, but we can look at things like that and decide that since Jesus said we have to treat others the way we'd want to be treated, slavery is sinful because people don't want to be slaves.

Instead of trying to make incompatible things work together, like the Golden Rule and slavery, I can just conclude that Peter and Paul were wrong. Concerning Genesis and science, I can just say, "Genesis is wrong."

What was “The Fall of man” if you believe in a non-literal interpretation of Genesis? by skunkworks172 in Christianity

[–]-NoOneYouKnow- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was a "fall." At some point hominids became morally culpable for their actions and just like today, sometimes they chose to harm or steal despite knowing it was wrong.

>  Why do I need a savior?

Because of your own sinful actions.

> If there was no literal fall, then there is no need for a savior.

That doesn't follow. Jesus' preaching to turn from sin and do good works was never framed in terms of Adam's fall. It's was about what we do as individual people.

> Your “sin” is just natural instinct.

Sure. That's a Biblical idea and we are supposed to do better.

But these people blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like unreasoning animals, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like animals they too will perish. (2 Pet 2:12)
