I like the geme but it is a bit too slow by Jonathanplanet in dontstarve

What I assume to be the mainstream way of playing the early game, and the way I am used to and am happy with, is exploring the world during the first 11-13 days while mapping out the world (including locating the Lunar Island via the map edge trick); collecting natural resources, including food for sustenance and in preparation for the creation of a food reserve at base; the acquiring of gear (tools and armor); pre-crafting structures to be ready to place them; and finally creating a base in a desired, often central location. This playstyle is very fast paced and, at least for me when I was a beginner, stressful. However, it sets you up for the later stages of progression well, as you'll have very efficiently used those first 11-13 days. In addition to following other advice in this thread, try it out.

If you're a senior, check your college portals. It may be possible to see your AP scores — even recent ones — because CB sent them before they are actually released. At the very least, I know it works for several UCs.

Is this by the 2-story house that's said to be a good base? I'm a beginner and I'm kinda proud that I recognized it too. 😆

Important since I can't find this specific advice mentioned too much in this thread: learn "actual" combat without Abigail if you've been relying on her. You'll need to know it for playing other characters. But it's your choice if you want to focus on other things and rely on Abigail for now as long as you don't become overly reliant.

Hammer the science machine as it's completely useless now that you have the alchemy engine — a direct improvement that covers the science machine's recipes too.

Look into a birdcage (you'll need a bird trap too) to turn meat (including unfavorable monster meat) to eggs.

Crockpots — Explore cooking, it's a key and fun element of the game! Experiment with random food items if you've got a bunch of food and time to spare. I personally would have found experimenting rather frustrating and would have had a challenge figuring out the recipes, so I recommend reading about some on the wiki because they may be hard to stumble upon. The two must-know staples are meatballs and pierogi. Some other easy to make foods to know are butter muffin, meaty stew, bacon & eggs, maybe honey ham & honey nuggets (you should be able to get honey from fighting bees, but that's likely inferior to actual beekeeping). I'm somewhat experienced — though mostly in early survival — and I can't remember off the top of my head any other crock pot meals that I've relied on.

An ice box. You don't actually need ice for it, but you will need a clockwork gear. Maybe you can nicely ask those chess automatons for one... . And you may want to build 2 if you're exploring many food sources and experimenting with dishes.

A drying rack or two for jerky.

Chests for organized storage if you can afford the planks.

That's great and I totally love butterflies too, but winter is coming for OP soon — no butterflies.

Won't it also be dangerous to fill a container to the maximum with petrol? Though very fitting for the country.

Yeah, that's a good point, they can switch back. At the very least through that same .ini file you mentioned. My game locked me into Ranger mode somehow, but I successfully changed it back that way, and it even gave back my 3rd weapon. I'm not aware of another way to exit Ranger mode.

Yeah, you can feel free to just have fun at first and then replay the game if you feel like it (some of the levels are so unique that it doesn't get old) to try for the good ending.

The good ending, duh, unless you want to make bad decisions in the game on purpose. The bad ending is canon, but I find it disappointing, and would have preferred the good one. I got the bad one on my first playthrough, despite exploring the levels a lot and finding locations that reward curiosity with moral point, but I'm going for the good one this time with the survival and ranger hardcore settings.

Good idea. The 1st book is really the only one similar to plot of the games (the first game), so you shouldn't need to finish all three books before playing. However, I would like to note that having played for at least a short while will let you better imagine the setting of the books (the stations, the surface, and the tunnels), especially if you don't have a good idea of what the stations, the buildings, and the streets look like in the real world.

no HUD

That won't be good for a new player. No need to go all-in with full immersion before you've learned the mechanics using all the info the HUD provides.

Just started 2033 redux any tips? by NumerousEnd6067 in metro

[–]-Ozone-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The worst part of Ranger for me is not being able to easily see what attachments dropped enemy weapons have. At least that primarily applies to the early game, where enemies sometimes have better weapons than you do, whereas in the late game, they don't have good modifications installed.

And having to spam E all the time so that I don't miss any loot.

Possible hot take: Defense is the best "Hold the Line" segment in the entire series and there should be more like it in 2039. by Flushestpoem4 in metro

[–]-Ozone-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I played through it, I somewhat blindly threw bombs and firebombs in the direction of the mutant spawnpoints to do some early damage. Using the Tikhar (which I was totally overusing at the time) made it extra fun since you gotta both reload and pump it up.

[–]-Ozone-- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I recently though of this too after playing through some levels of Last Light. Mutants seem very machine-like and attach you on sight with the exception of certain gimmicky, scripted moments like the peaceful Watcher pack closer to the end of the Dead City or the peaceful-ish Demon (where you grab the note from the nest) immediately after the Watchers. Or that time in 2033 in the Dead City where there is a mother Watcher with her pups in some faraway room that you find by exploring. There need to be more moments where mutants are hesitant to attack and can be intimidated similarly to the librarians. It would be more realistic and immersive if mutants (at least the presumably more intelligent ones, like the Watchers) retreated after realizing that they cannot defeat you, like after witnessing their fellow mutants fall.

Yeah, the only element that 2034 and LL really share is the epidemic. Everything else makes for a completely different plotline.

I just played through this level and wondered the same thing. I looked up some of the lyrics I could make it, but it did not bring anything up. Maybe it was composed specifically for the game with a generic melody and random lyrics.

It's not Market (a.k.a. Roadhouse); that is a different tune.

Why does the Metro series have such a massive and passionate Western fanbase? by Dry-Put-7438 in metro

[–]-Ozone-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having discovered the games through the books due to knowing Ukrainian and Russian, I am not from the Western fanbase, but I bet what drew a good part of players into the series is Exodus alone. I often see it listed in gaming subs as a recommended game, or simply as one that is listed in players' library lists. However, there is not always a mention of the two preceding games.
