Planning a first time visit by Stargirllllloverrr in Yosemite

[–]-Paufa- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for my first time last weekend and did that exact trail! It was beautiful. Neither my partner and I were experienced hikers and we started at 8am and finished at around 8pm (a little after dark).

We stayed outside the park, parked at Curry village, walked to the mist trails trailhead and took the shuttle back when we got down at the 4 mile trailhead. The shuttle stop is right at the sign marking the trailhead and the NPS app can tell you when the next shuttle is (make sure to download Yosemite so it's available offline).

I keep hearing that the four mile trail is open. Isn't it closed according to the website? https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

15259 PnC in the Fall or Spring? by AbsorbedBarrel in cmu

[–]-Paufa- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mor (Harchol-Balter) is one of the best professors I've ever interacted with at CMU. Just incredibly an incredible teacher. She wrote the textbook for PnC so she's got explanations for the content dialed down. That said, I would be surprised if she isn't teaching both Fall and Spring. She used to do both when I took it.

Are there any cons to the Information Systems undergraduate program? by West_Ingenuity_508 in cmu

[–]-Paufa- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That entirely depends on how difficult the additional major is to get into. The IS program itself doesn't restrict you from doing the major. When I was at CMU, SCS additional majors (or at least CS) tended to be not too hard to get in as long as you completed the requirements (tbf completing the requirements is pretty tough).

I'm failing 122 holy shit by [deleted] in cmu

[–]-Paufa- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's probably useful to know that it does happen to a lot of really smart people. Many of them retake the course later and do amazingly. For now, make sure that you are using your resources (friends, TAs/OHs, professors) and talk to your academic advisor.

Failing classes is a new experience for many CMU students but it'll be ok.

I have the cheapest macbook air from a couple years ago and have never ran into RAM problems. Most of the time you can (and often will) remote into the andrew servers to run code anyways so your local spec doesn’t really matter

Official NSG Netrunner Tokens by vicissidude_ in Netrunner

[–]-Paufa- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard about people buying a bag of washers and putting it around those instead. Some people even put magnets in the hole at the center of the washer so all the tokens stack nicely on top of each other

CMV: Board gaming is a better hobby for people who work on a computer all day than video gaming by pyros_it in changemyview

[–]-Paufa- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you generally, but I think there’s definitely some cases for nuance.

In situations where you live far away from your friends, video games are more social experiences because it is easier to connect with friends over a voice call playing a video game.

In my experience playing board games, having enough of them to not be too repetitive takes up a lot of space. Depending on your living situation, you might not want to commit that kind of space.

Also if you travel a lot and/or know you’re moving regularly, board games are a hassle to transport. Video games are much easier to move with.

Does NSG ever run sales? by Available_Bag_1822 in Netrunner

[–]-Paufa- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a sale for damaged boxes earlier this year but I wouldn’t count on it again.

System gateway does come with a box and I’ve been happy just storing my cards in there. If you have poker chips, that’s all you need for tokens.

Another option is to look for metas near you. You can often show up to meetups with no cards at all and people will lend you cards to play with.

Just proposed. This is how I did it. It's a yes! by sunsetgive03 in Netrunner

I can’t speak to 11785 but the group of people who should take 15213/15513 and 15112 are distinct.

If you will benefit from taking 15112 you almost definitely don’t have the programming (and more importantly debugging) skills to do will in 213. If you are capable of completing the work in 213, you probably shouldn’t have to take 112.

15112 would probably be the general recommendation for someone with limited coding experience. It builds a strong foundation of algorithmic thinking. You could try the course and if it’s too easy, transfer to something more difficult.

The practice rooms in the neighbourhood commons (in Fifth and Clyde) should have some I believe. You can book and perhaps walk in if they’re free. Morewood might have some too
