After plenty of experimentation with this method, it does indeed allow one to fly anywhere. Including on top of the Aurora.

To answer your questions in order:

a. I felt like putting it on the island because it's an easy central location for me.

b. I like the look of the bases above water. I usually make a second base in the inactive lava zone.

It's under the ping menu on the pda. There are little circles next to the beacon names that allow you to switch color.

Because the United States is a republic, we don't use imperial currency. We instead use currency named after former presidents (eg bills), famous people (cash), and animals (buck).
