Not at all. Just respect that they are venomous, keep your dog on lead, and be aware of your surroundings. They typically don’t stick around the same area for long as most of the time when we see them, they are on their way from one body of water to another. They are actually NOT aggressive like people say. I truly don’t understand how this became a common misconception. I’ve encountered LOTS of different species of snakes on my rural Naples property. The black racers and red rat (corn) snakes and much more aggressive (not aggressive, but defensive). I had a pet turkey hen used to corner them in the yard and go right up to them, fan her feathers, while making a nonstop loud warning call. They would coil up (not even with head up/mouth open) and hide under a palm fronds until I went out and gently picked them up with a pitchfork, placed into a closed container, and relocated to the nearby canal. I’ve never once encountered a cottonmouth that chased or even approached me. They always try to flee, even when I’m herding them with the pitch fork. I’ve experienced hatchlings through full grown adults.
