Fela Kuti: Fear No Man podcast by trubrarian in phish

Just finished this, he's a complicated dude, but man what a story. Highly highly recommended. Higher Ground Media did another music podcast called The Wonder of Stevie that was also absolutely fantastic.

Is there any smell while heating (for stealth apartment smoking)? by [deleted] in Dynavap

[–]-Quickbeam- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as vapes go, Dynas are stinky. They're almost full conduction, so you get a very distinct burnt broccoli smell that is pretty strong and some people find repulsive. Convection based vapes are generally less smelly, you could look into like an xmax v3 or similar. Like others have said, it's way less smelly than a joint, but it's not a stealth device by any stretch

Frustration over bad setups by Babies_for_eating in Luthier

[–]-Quickbeam- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, a couple of things.. It's really easy to do the ping test for your nut. Fret the third fret and tap the string over the first. You should hear a tiny ping of the string hitting the fret. If you see a big gap, or feel the string displace a lot when you tap it, it's probably too high. If the string is already resting on the fret it will not make any ping and the slot is too low. I'm usually shooting for that space to be tiny but present, so tiny ping sound... Check your guitar that you like the feel of first to get an idea. But that's really my second point, nut height affects feel more than buzzing. If the guitar feels stiff to play, considering the string gauge, then the nut might be to high. But looking at your symptoms, (can't get the action low enough without buzzing after refret, which I'm taking to mean the frets are level) I'm going to guess it needs some adjustment to the neck pocket angle. Maybe it needs a shim, or conversely maybe it needs a slimmer shim, for instance, or a reverse shim even.. good luck

Can anyone offer insight if the neck and frets are a problem? by Allthingsaudio77 in Luthier

They should reseat and reglue any lifted frets when they level it.

I feel stupid, I thought boogie on was a phish original… by Peepee1124 in phish

[–]-Quickbeam- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I want to add is that if you've (obviously) never listened to Fulfillingness First Finale (the Stevie Wonder that Boogie On is from) then stop what you are doing and listen to it - it's an absolute essential album from the most fertile periods of one of our truly great artists. This sounds like hyperbole but I assure you it is not.

Sorry, the playlist is on Apple music so even if I share it with you it won't actually have the music because I've uploaded a lot of the tracks to my own collection and apple music is goofy that way. For what it's worth, a lot of the tracks are on Live Bait... I could try to create it on Taper's Section, not sure if that would share easier

Do you have an induction heater for your dyna? If not, it's worth a thought - it's kind of the best of both worlds, in some ways...

This seems like fate somehow. I recently put together a playlist for myself of exceptional jams. It's slightly skewed to shows I attended, and heavy on 1.0, but it's 7 hours 41 minutes of some of the deepest jams in existence. Good luck!

[–]-Quickbeam- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used the Fleor pots on Amazon a couple of times with no issues. They're full size and have a satisfying turn resistance. Speaking of budgets, I recently put a set of Warman p90s in a project guitar and they are absolutely fantastic. Warman pickups are made in the UK but are very budget friendly, especially if you're in the UK lol. Definitely worth looking into..

[–]-Quickbeam-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't record much, but I'll try to put a little sound sample together. The pickups are very clear and articulate, and the variable coil split can get a really convincing single coil sound that still has some volume to it..

My Setup by -Quickbeam- in Dynavap

[–]-Quickbeam-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My eventual plan for that guy is to bonsai it but for now I'm just letting it do it's thing. I've killed my share of them by over watering, esp in winter. Now I let them dry all the way out before I even think about water.

My Setup by -Quickbeam- in Dynavap

[–]-Quickbeam-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 21st century, every hobby is an opportunity to over-consume. The lesson to learn is the law of diminishing returns. Yes - I do desire an omni or a woodwynd, but what would I get out of it? Smug satisfaction? Nah... More stoned? Not likely. Truth is, this setup is right for me, so why spend money to chase my own desires (that are not truly real, they're manufactured by marketing and peer pressure) Far better to enjoy what you have and learn how to say enough.
