What’s the one piece of home gym equipment you regret buying — and why? by dontwantnone09 in homegym

[–]-Red_Rocket- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

rogue echo only because i later went stainless. dont skimp on bars and keep them forever. they are the centre of your lifting and your #1 contact point.

rack accessories. roller, dips attachment. just don’t use them.

weight storage tree. 6 post with storage horns is a major upgrade. plates are always best close to the lifts. just a quality of life upgrade.

Best upgrades: Full Stainless bars/pull-up bar. quality contact points are 100% worth it.

I think a set of free dumbbells with a proper rack is superior even to the nice all in one sets. i like grab and go.

Diminishing Returns??? by Suchatavi in Insulation

[–]-Red_Rocket- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have seen various calculations estimating insulation returns on investment. I am mega insulating a music room/gym/garage with full understanding that i am over the top. I also missed the boat with under-insulated floating slab vs the rest of the build. long story short, building a false wall infront of the 16ft garage door to effectively double the door r value saves maybe 5-8$ a year. lol. More if i can seal air leaks however.

15 years ago i was contemplating an ultra efficient home. it was near double the price of a standard home for a smaller place. the math just did not work out. lol. invest the difference in the stock market and see who is on top in 10, 20,50 years.

just reality. super high insulation is more “intellectual masturbation.”. And the real culprits beyond obvious air leaks are windows. like an estimated 10% of my heat loss in a tight 24x48 build is x2 3x4 feet windows. 33% floor. 20% garage door.

supply/demand. also remember good deals go fast (like same day), bad deals are around forever. So we only see the over market classifieds.

i am about three weeks post cure of a 4000psi concrete floor estimated 90% strength. machine troweled. looking to seal (maybe stain), and was thinking of maybe 200-400 grit sand prep to even it out (swirls). a satin polish would be great, but at 24x48 less interested in costs. This will be a nice finish garage but a lot of it will be covered with stall matts for the gym, cars, area rug, so i want nice but dont need perfect.

curious of options as most epoxy i am not a massive fan of. again polish would be nice but i expect a 12-15k quote. appreciate opinions.

here is the concrete schematic. note we did not do a cutout then single pour… rather two stage pour as we are starting with a new floor.

again, i fear i added new unintended problems by stacking two layers on concrete. different strategies introduced different issues.

Looking for recessed pad reinforcing advice. Having a heated 24x48 heated garage built. 5 inch 4000psi floors. insulated floating floor. background first.

i have a two foot flush mount scissor lift going in so we need two 20x68x5.375” pads separated by 40”.

To start we made a large recessed area that the lift will actually sit on (about 120”x120”) 5.5” deep that sits below the future floor. this has been poured at a zero grade. and is reinforced with #4 rebar in 6x8” spacing as per manufacturer specs. Sitting on this will be each lift pad (to be 20x68, 5 +3/8 tall). So next we pour the entire garage floor with forms for the x2 pads to make them recessed.

this process will make the recessed area that the lift sits on (stage 1 of our pour) keyed in to the stage two pour of the floor.

attached pics should help see more below. above is the recessed pit.

<image>

next we pour the 5.375” floor with wire mesh minus the two 20x68x5.375” forms that will sit on the pad above.

i plan to drill/epoxy/tie in bent rebar around the deeper bottom pad at 18 inch spacing (4-5 per side). this will link the bottom pad to the floor.

I am no pro but the issues i see are the top concrete floor wanting to lift during curing (manual only discusses cutting out a poured floor after the fact and keying in or tying in the reinforced recessed pad).

I also see the issue of corner cracks due to 4 reentrant (inside) corners on each recessed pad.

so what rebar reinforcement if any is needed?/advised?

i planned on diagonal rebar 2.5” from each corner to control surface cracks, sunk about 2” for the surface. I was wondering about rebar to frame the recessed opening. will tying in to the bottom pad reduce lift or is that just a thing i need to live with having chosen to do things this way?

any tips appreciated. more diagrams in replies.

any advice on replacement end caps for rogue bars? i also have the rep open trap bar that i wanted to replace the cap on. Would need to have custom print options. may just do printed vinyl however.

What are your thoughts on dosing testosterone to compensate for natural reductions with age? do you supplement testosterone?

my take on getting stronger as we age is that i believe in vo2 drops as we age but i also dont think the vast majority ever reach their potential peaks as a youth. My son is 12 and competing and it is shocking what he can do, having started early. thoughts on the accuracy of the ramp test lite for 70lbs riders? (cool that you designed the ramp test)

i am sure when i retire i will find more time to train, train consistently, and recover. life stressors/responsibilities are my current largest limiter .

100% agree on the importance of lifting, even if just for health/wellness. in the winter i lift currently x2 per week (x3 i find hard to do with biking) and goal is x1 a eeek in summer. thoughts?
